My garage doors need painting!

Does this mean you are NOT going to wdw as planned?? Then maybe you should consider a Thanksgiving trip :goodvibes at your home DVC resort. Thanksgiving dinner at Fort Wilderness sounds pretty good, doesn't it??

This may be an odd thing to ask here, so bear with me, but I have a question about sleeping before the drive. I've seen a few mention that they'll come home from work, sleep for a few hours, and then drive all night. Others, dvczerfs in particular, go to bed early (7:00 pm), get a good night's sleep, and the are on the road by 3:00 am. My question is -- how??? Seriously. I have a hard time sleeping, period, before a big trip (driving or flying). On an average night, I am in bed by 10:00 pm. If I try to sleep much before that, it throws my whole schedule off and I might still be awake at 1:00 or 2:00 am. If I go to bed really early, I might nap for 20-30 minutes, but certainly nothing that would tide me over all night. For those that are better at this than me, are there any pointers or tips you can pass along? Or is it is something that either you can do it, or you can't? In 81 days, we'll be leaving around 3:30 am, and I would love to get 8 hours of sleep the night before since I'll be driving about 12 of the 13 hours on our first day. I'd be okay with 6 hours of sleep, but that would still have me in bed and snoring by 9:00 in order to be awake by 3:00. (I'd like to have a quick breakfast and brush my teeth before we leave.)

I've used Advil pm a time or two but you need a good 9 or 10 hours to sleep with that. I'll normally wake up really early the day before the drive so I am tired by early evening. You have to make sure your room is really dark too.

Sleep patterns vary with the individual; however, the more sleep you have before your drive the better. Is your 3:30 a.m. departure time necessary (in order to make progress before the traditional a.m. rush in your area) or can you leave a bit later?

Since you are doing the drive over two days, go as far as you can on your first day (according to your alertness) and then complete your drive the following day.

Ultimatelly, your body will dictate your drive. :teacher:

All the best. :thumbsup2

:lmao: the garage doors are the first thing im painting!!!! :lmao: a few years ago I was cleaning, ok, throwing stuff away out of the garage and I found my old hockey stick. I found a puck and a little slap shot against the wall and the puck went through the window in the garage door.:lmao: so I replaced all the glass with plywood so now I have to paint them.
oh the 11 day trip is still on for September. pending on brianas work, we are looking at a june and September trip next year. five trips in twelve months last year. :sad2:

sleeping. about three days before we leave, I have a hard time sleeping.:sad2: my normal life is up at 4am, bed around 9pm. the last two nights before we leave, ill stay awake till about 10-11pm and still get up at 4am. the night we leave im pretty well beat so falling asleep around 6pm is easy to do. we are up around midnight and im good. ill drive straight through just stopping for gas and restroom stops. I get behind the wheel and im wide awake. I guess my main problem is im a 49 year old kid and cant wait to get there. :lmao: when we would do it in two days, we would stop at a motel and I mostly just flipped and flopped and couldn't sleep anyway so now we just do it straight through. have a good trip! :thumbsup2

Driving to Colonial Williamsburg before the end of the month. Will get an opportunity to experience the I-495 bridge shutdown effect on I-95 and the new Baltimore construction's impact on the same interstate. :scared1:

All the best. :thumbsup2

We're headed down Thursday, west Chicago suburbs driving straight through. I think we have 9 trips under our belt now, but we haven't made the drive since Feb. 2013. Last trip we changed it up and took 57 instead of 65. The semi traffic in Indiana and construction just makes me nervous. I'm wondering now that we got the speed limit bump here in IL if 57 makes even more sense.

I'm not sure what time we'll get on the road. My husband would prefer to leave at 330am and drive the whole thing, but he has to go in to work that morning. I'm guessing we'll get moving around 1-2 in the afternoon. Any thoughts from my Midwest drivers? CruisingCat has always given me sound advice in years past. Thanks!

Lizzy Bean, we drive from SW Wisconsin, and have driven straight through several times. On our last trip, we Drove down on Dec 30, and drove through Rockford/Champaign/ Bloomington/Paducah route. Nashville was surprisingly easy, but would have considered the Briley Parkway had the drive through time been during morning/evening rush hour. Atlanta, just hunkered down, with truck/fifth wheel and went through about 2:30 pm. We stopped in Valdosta at a HIExpress, then only a bit over three hours left next day. We did not want to take two days to recoup. Coming home late January, snow storm, was a different story! But then again, it was 2014, and the winter spring weather was tough.

Good luck on your drive. We are headed back to Disney late July. Cold, ice and snow won't be a problem, and I have told myself not to mention heat and humidity! Have fun, make memories.

I think everyone is different. I find that a nap or two in the two days before I go (nothing outstanding -- 30-60 min tops) gives me some SPIF-type zzzs I guess. Also, a glass of red wine with dinner means I'll be up at 3 a.m. anyways, needing a glass of water. So I just shower, throw everyone in the car, and get going!

I usually get up around 4:30 am anyway, so arising a few hours earlier to leave around 2:30 am does not affect me much. But I do try and get normal sleep the couple days before so I am not going into the departure day at a deficit. Though that has not always worked out as you are trying to get so many other thigns done after work those days.

You really need to stay there. I think you'll love it, especially because of all the dining options nearby.

I'm with you - chicken, mashed potatoes plus the turkey dinner! It's gonna be a pretty tasty Thanksgiving dinner for sure.

Left this morning, but are taking a detour to Houston,TX first for our Grandson's graduation. There is construction in southern IL. We just went through it about an hour ago and there were no delays. IL still has the truck speed limit the same speed as cars unlike IN which has a lower speed for trucks. But since fuel prices are higher in IL than IN, I think a lot of trucks take 65 when headed in that direction. I am seeing more trucks on 57 south of the 24 exit (headed to MO) than I have seen on 24 between 57 and 65.
As long as you avoid rush hours around larger cities, you should be okay. Do be aware that some states do their road construction during the night time hours.
