"For 2,000+ Mile Round-Trip Drivers Only!" (IV)

Hi! Just stumbled across this thread and wanted to join in! Although I don't have as many as some of you, I have done 3 driving trips in the past 11 years. Does it count extra that those were as passengers on a charter bus with high school kids and it was 26 hours of driving???? Granted we had 1 stop for dinner at a golden corral. The rule is that when the drivers stop for their mandated breaks or gas, the adults are allowed off the bus but not all the kids. SO for 2 of those trips I got to be an adult!

This year I am taking my first ever personal vehicle trip. It will be 2477 miles round trip just from location to location. So i would guess that including sight-seeing along the way we will be over 2500. We leave June 21. Packing is always a challenge because we are 3 people in a little sports car. Hahaha

That is a long trip on a bus with H.S. Kids. :(
On my H.S. Band trip we went by train. My son's H.S. Band just went, they flew.
Where are you coming from?

Our family went to Disney last in 2009. We want to go this year but given all the increases we will have to make a few changes. First we will have to drive instead of fly. Its our plan to leave Southern Maine at 4pm on a Friday. We hope to drive straight down with minimal stops. Is it reasonable to expect to arrive by 6pm Saturday? Boston is about 3 hrs. away. - No more meal plan or Moderates for us either....

I live in NH about 1 hour north of the seacoast area, so my drive time to WDW is probably pretty similar to yours.

You are asking about 26 hours being reasonable. Unless you make some lengthy stops, you should get there in well under 26 hours.

Your 4PM departure time is a good choice. You will be past NYC by 9:00, past DC by 1:00 AM, and by 7:00 AM you should in South Carolina somewhere. Assuming an hour off the road for breakfast, you should be arriving at WDW around 3:00 or so.

Obviously, more frequent stops will add time, but if you have a couple of drivers who can keep going and going and going....your trip should be under 24 hours easily.

I haven't read up on the thread! So forgive me if I'm not caught up!

September is my very first family road trip! As a kid we drove to VA and NC. I drove a couple times to SC with just my first baby.

But this is it! Driving from MD to WDW with a 7 year old, a 6 year old, and a by the. 20 month old!

The plan is to leave at 6pm after I have a good long nap! Then switch to my hub driving hopefully no sooner than 1-2 am!

The GPS tells me it's a 13 1/2 hour drive.

Any tips? Things I need to know from your experiences?

My middle hates to have his legs dangle in the car and gets really uncomfortable in his car seat on just an 1 1/2 hour drive to the grandparents. Do you think putting a cooler under him for him to rest his feet on will help?

If this trip goes well, we're driving back down in December to stay in my sister's time share at Christmas! Free place to stay! I don't wanna miss it. So I need all the advice! Lol

What do you plan to do your first day? One of you will be tired when you get there if you are driving all night.

Sleep! Lunch! Explore the resort. Dinner at 1900 Fare and maybe see the electric water pageant from there.

If we can't check in right away. We'll explore have lunch and then sleep. Then dinner and pageant.

the cooler under the feet is a good idea. bring what ever makes them happy, books, video games, dvds etc....

13 1/2 hours is a good time line from ma. just a few things that we went through when dd was little. but this is what we ran into:
napping before you leave................ good luck! I don't sleep two days before we leave much less try to nap a few hours before departure. but if you can do it, get as much as you can.

traffic wont be a problem since you are driving during the night. driving all night is ruff. long, dark, straight highway with nothing really to look at but those white dotted lines pass by you can get tired and yawning pretty fast.
if your not use to it, it could be fun.

kids sleep most of the trip......... just remember you are getting there eight hours before your room maybe ready. with us, dd slept all night and mom and dad didn't can make for a looooooong first day. kids are ready to go and all you want is a bed and a pillow.

what we found, this is just us, but just say if we leave a Friday night and drive all night, you end up grumping around Saturday morning and sleeping most of Saturday afternoon. so our first "vacation" time starts Saturday night.

if I get to bed early Friday night (7pm) get up around 3am which is eight hours sleep, hit the road at 3:30am and pull in Saturday afternoon at 4pm, my room is ready, everyone is ready to go and the grumping was held to a min.

its kinda hard because your not really sure how the kids are going to react to a long car trip yet. if they are having a problem traveling and your driving along at 3am somewhere along i95, it could be a little ruff.

that is just what we found. everyone, every kid is different. now that dd is older and its just dw and I, we leave at 1am and drive straight though and pull into wdw at around 4-4:30pm. I also drive for a living. Im a rep. for a hvac company and drive about 40k a year for work and im one of those people who can just keep driving so that helps.

hopefully a few others with kids will be along and give you some idea how they go about there trips.

when In September are you going? we will be down the 10th to the 20th.

have a great trip and drive safe!! :thumbsup2

Thanks so much! We're far more worried about the trip back than down. I am a nightowl! I go to bed between 2 and 4 am nearly every night.

But driving back at 12-1 in the afternoon will be rough. Lol

I planned some games! Disney movies of course! Two smartphones! Kindle fire and an iPod with games and lots of cords and chargers!

My middle loves to read so that's usually what he does in the car. My oldest loves video games. It's not typically allowed so hours of it should be a fun treat! Lol

I'm worried about baby! She's potty training now. I hope I don't have to stop every hour for the bathroom like I do now!

I have a sitter lined up to take the baby that Thursday we leave! She's a friend who is flying down the day after we get there. So I really hope to sleep. But I know I'll have to pack and load the car and clean up and all too!

I'm worried about the white line lulling me! But I have audiobooks planned once they are all done movies and sleeping!

We added a day to the beginning because we want to make the most of the next day's evening hours! So that day we're hoping to get the grumpies out!

My husband loves to drive and I get restless and I'm the nightowl. That's why we're letting me drive first and then when I start getting grumpy we have the one who loves to drive take over.

The baby has me the most anxious. I know tips and tricks for the boys. But the baby, she throws us curve balls daily. Lol

We'll be there 18-27th! We are so excited! I think we're counting the milliseconds! Lol

You have a great trip also!!!!

thank you!!

see......... you know what your doing! :thumbsup2 I recall when dd was potty training we had a potty thing in the van. dw bought liners for it and it was basically a small plastic bag with a some kind of absorbent stuff on the bottom. if she had to go, that's what she used. I think she used it one time. we try to stop every two, two and a half hours. we don't make it a project. jump out of the car, use the rest room and jump back into the car. maybe a five minute stop max.
its a toss up with a baby in the car. :rotfl2: well, not the baby tossing up, you know what I mean. :lmao:

We don't have a baby and stop every 3 hours, to stretch and go to the bathroom if needed.

HAhaha! Yep! I know!

Alright, flash bathroom breaks! That gives me an idea actually. Park, potty, road! Every break doesn't need to be an event! Quick stops will work!

I'll look into a car potty for the baby!

Just got back last night! Had great traffic on the way down and back. Only issue we had were the severe storms moving across the Carolinas last weekend!

I have all of next week off from work. it was the week dd and I were going to wdw BUT...... she has to work. I guess ill be painting and doing yet more painting. lol

Yay, double digits!

Starting to load up the minivan for Saturday! We'll be stopping along the way, straight through isn't an option for us this go-round. All I need to do is pick up the snacks for the cooler and we'll fill the tank at Wawa Friday afternoon!
