Do you mean for 417? I'm not sure about that route. The only toll road we use is 429.

If you 're asking about 417, it's $7.50. We get two rolls of quarters for the trip and just leave them in the console, just in case they go up a little. Using all quarters is easy because you can go through the automatic toll lanes. Just make sure you're in the cash lanes and not the center Sunpass lanes. They are separated by a large concrete barrier.

If you do miss one, you can get an envelope from the next toll booth or you'll get a bill at home because they read your license.

Headed to Disney in August for birthday celebrations! It'll be our second drive to SE Mass. We left the first time around 2:30-3 am and drove 95 all the way and stopped mid-NC for the night. I'm hoping to make it to SC this time on day 1. Any recommendations for hotels between Dillon and Santee, SC?

Has anyone gotten one of those Wi-Fi hotspots for the car? How do they work and are they worth the $$?

We've had one for the past 3 trips. We love it because tablets do not have data, so it would eliminate the use of the Nooks and now I also have a Galaxy Tab. Plus I don't have to use my 3g/4g data on the road so it works out great.

We bought our first one from Virgin, it was a 3g version and it worked fine. Last year we bought the 4g version. It can accommodate up to 5 devices at once. You just have to turn it on and sign in each device.

One caveat - it needs power so we always keep it plugged into the power source. We have a couple of multi plugs so we can do that plus one or two other pieces. I have to recharge the phone and the kids stuff usually needs to be plugged in on the road so it's worth the investment for the ability to plug in more than one thing at a time. Plus the one with multiple plugs usually have a cord so they're less bulky around the driver's area.

Something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Lenmar-Duplic...id=1401299800&sr=8-3&keywords=auto+power+port
Ours also has a USB port so you don't need car chargers for everything. That is easier now with the modular car charger plugs and USB cables, but it used to be a big pain.

Unlimited from Virgin is $55 for the month. It was great when you also had to pay for internet in the Disney hotels, really saved a lot. Now we may go for less data because it will just be on the road back and forth.

I also like the fact that I can use it in the hotel on the road. One of our first trips took us to a "sign in" even though the instructions from the hotel didn't mention signing in. I didn't do it and looked up the Yahoo address and found it was a keystroke recorder. Probably a lot of people on the road check credit cards and bank accounts so someone was poised to steal passwords. Nice huh?

Why this thread exists: today's favorite other thread-post headline:

Anyone else having airline ticket heartburn?

All the best. :thumbsup2

some of my favorites:

"oh I would never drive, my time is to valuable to sit in a car."
"gas is so expensive"
"wear and tear on my car. oil change, new tires (your driving to florida from new York, you wont run off a set a tires)"
and my personal favorite......

meals!!! oh gee, I have to plan on eating meals when I drive but not when I fly. :confused3
so if i vacation and away from home Saturday to Saturday, it cost more to eat when driving then flying? the answer I got....................( im no rocket scientist, I cant even spell scientist. :lmao:) but this is what the poster told me....... when I fly, its only three hours and I don't have to eat in three hours but when I drive, its all day so I have to eat three meals.

I don't know about you, but I have to feed myself two or three times a day if im driving, flying, walking or im gonna die. (at least lose a lot of weight):lmao:

ok..... cant argue with that logic. :lmao: after that one, I stopped posting on other threads about flying or driving. :lmao:

please fly, its just one less on the road I have to pass. :lmao:

one is an "east bypass" and the other is a "west bypass" around Orlando.
I never used either of them but I may give it a shot this trip. pending on the traffic cams on the I phone.
we always made it through Orlando without sitting in traffic. a lot of times we hit a lot of traffic but I am use to driving in that stuff so it don't bother me.

I just found this thread and haven't had a chance to read through all of the posts yet. But the ones I have read, I love! We drive from Western PA and love it! It is funny to watch people's expressions when we tell them we're driving - like I have 2 heads! They just can't get it trough their heads that we wouldn't fly. (We have flown several times, but when we can, we like to drive).

And yes, we eat several times a day if we're flying or driving :)

:lmao: welcome to the club. :thumbsup2

I hope you put those meals in your flying budget! :lmao:

im sorry about that post. I have nothing against flying. I fly for work a few times a year (and hate it) but it just makes me laugh looking at reasons not to drive. if you like to drive, great. if you like to fly great. what ever floats your boat.
I still cant figure out why in a vacation budget people figure meals into driving and not flying?
in 1995 dw and bought a 37 foot prowler and kept it on a site in a campground and it didn't move. we camped for 11 years summer, winter, spring and fall. just about every weekend. people would ask me, how can you afford it????? (gas was still $1.85) the first thing people would say is "what about meals"????? :lmao:

I loved the post that someone posted from AAA (the travel agent people trying to sell airline tickets) on how much is cost per mile to drive on vacation vs fly. according to that, it would cost me $4000 to drive my Mercedes glk350 to florida and back. :lmao: my 2012 has been to florida 5 times and the tires still look like the day I drove it off the lot. it didn't cost me $1200 worth of tread to drive 2000 miles. I pump in the highest octane gas they make and drive on the edge of the speed limit and it still don't cost $650 in gas. :lmao:

I have a 4Runner and spend about $400 round trip on gas. We usually pack food so that cost is the same as if we stayed at home. Tolls are about $20 round trip too. If we stay at least a week, we drive. If we only have a few days, we fly.

That's us too. Because we live so far, we only drive if we're staying at least a week. If we go for a long weekend ( F&W this year) we always fly.

We don't count food or tolls into our drive cost. If we stayed at home, we would still pay tolls to get to the shopping center. If we flew to Disney, we would still need to rent a car as we spend extra time in FL visiting family and we would still end up paying tolls. I couldn't think about being that close to family without a visit.
The nice thing about our drive is that our one daughter has moved to TN on our route to Disney.

May I join with only 1900 miles round trip? I'm coming from Northern MD!

I'm a little over 1,800 RT. I justify it by traveling around the Orlando area. We drove a total of 2,100 miles our last trip.

You can easily drive 100 miles going to and from the parks every day.

Good point! We will definitely be using our car some days!

June has arrived!

Who will be making the first 2,000+ mile round trip drive of the month?

BTW: you 1,900 round-trip mile folks are most welcome on this site. ;)

All the best. :thumbsup2
