Flowers and Star Wars and Harry, oh my! TR started, link inside!

Another look at our Disney history.

After our 1989 trip to Disneyland we did not visit another Disney park until December 1997, the year of the ugly pink castle cake.

Dad hates Disney which is the main reason for this, he also hates "wasting" money and to him a Disney vacation is a waste of money. Good thing he doesn't need to go with us anymore, in fact, we don't tell him that we go to Disney at all!

Our begging and whining finally wore him down (a nice cash bonus also helped as well). My dad was in the Canadian Navy and we were living in the States on an exchange posting at the time. Since we had been out of the country for x amount of years they gave the family a couple thousand dollars in bonus travel money which was decided would be used to fund a WDW trip and so we were booked for a Christmas vacation at Disney World.

We were living in Virginia Beach at the time and we drove down to Florida with a few stops along the way.

We stopped and stayed the night in Charleston. We did a city tour and visited a local plantation house.

We also spent the night in Savannah. We didn't do much exploring there as we arrived later in the evening and the weather was overcast.

Once we hit Florida we briefly visited St. Augustine and then spent a day at Cape Canaveral visiting the Kennedy Space Centre, Dad is a real space geek so he enjoyed that part of the trip.

After that it was off to WDW! Since Dad was on exchange with the military we were able to stay at the Shades of Green property on-site which is owned by the US military, I remember the room being really big and I remember a Mickey shaped pool.

Unfortunately for us the weather during the trip was not wonderful. It was overcast and rainy the whole time we were in Florida. Luckily it was a warm rain instead of a cold rain. Little did we know that this was the beginning of our rain curse.

I recall that we never stayed in the parks past dark on the trip and I don't think we ate in the parks either except for a few snacks here and there. It was insanely crowded and this was in the days before fastpass so all the lines were extremely long. I still remember vividly waiting in line to see "Honey I Shrunk the Audience". The line stretched out of the building and wrapped around several times and it seemed like we waited for hours.

There is only one family picture from the whole trip, it is also the only picture that I am in as I was the photographer most of the time. I was going through my "don't take my picture!" phase. We went to Blizzard Beach on Christmas Day, we figured we might as well since it was raining and we were going to get wet either way.

Amazingly this is a picture I took of a little picture inside one of those keychain viewfinder things, I think it turned out pretty well.

In the picture below you can see Dad mocking Disney and the "fake" friendliness that he hates, one of his main pet peeves about theme parks.

After WDW we continued our trip and went down to Miami, Key West, Naples and then Savannah again on the way back home. Pretty much the whole trip was paid for courtesy of the Canadian military, our tax dollars at work!

This will be my last PTR update until after Christmas. I know everybody is busy with work and getting ready for the holiday.

Merry Christmas!

Awesome update! The quality of those pictures are really nice!

Have a great Christmas!

Great report! Looking forward to reading more. We are also going in May. The 18-27th. Can't wait for SWW!

Erich :lmao:

Love the trip down memory lane.

Merry Christmas!

Loving the photos! I was there during the year of the cake castle. I was 9 and I thought it was the coolest thing ever.

Awesome update of your first Disney trip!!! As for Erich's story:scared1:No wonder I called them Bros GRIMM!!!:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

I was thinking maybe he had you pegged, Lessa, but other than that...... :rolleyes1

 Well Erich is correct, I do have a substance abuse problem, in fact, I should probably join a support group, NA! I am ashamed to admit that I have been known to fall victim to substance abuse on occasion. If I can't get to sleep, where do I turn? To drugs. ;) Nyquil does the trick every time, nothing knocks me out faster. :thumbsup2

A message from the great beyond....:littleangel: Wishing all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year:santa:

I was so sadened to read about your Demise :sad2:

Erich is going to

Since I am stuck at work this Christmas I thought I would kill the time by filling out this Disney Survey that jelloarms made up and shared on her PTR.

JELLOARMS's DISNEY WORLD SURVEY

1. What is your name?::

Lessa

2. When was the first time you went to Disney World?::

First time visiting Disney World was December 1997.

3. When was the last time you went to Disney World?::

May 2009 for a two week land and sea mother/daughter trip.

4. When is the next time you will be in Disney World?::

May 2011 for two weeks!

GETTING THERE

5. How do you usually get to to Disney World?::

Airplane. We considered driving but decided against it as it would mean taking at least 2-3 more days off of work just for travel.

6. What do you do to pass the time while getting there?::

I have been pretty lucky on all my flights and Angel has been on. If that isn't on then I just surf the channels until I can find something interesting.

7. Do you have any particularly memorable or interesting experiences you can recall happening on your journey to Disney World?::

Flying into Orlando during Tropical Storm Fay was an experience!

LODGING

8. What is your favorite place you have stayed at and why? It does not have to be on property::

Wilderness Lodge. It just had that something special that made the trip that much more magical. I don't really know how to describe it but it was feeling that I got every time I entered into the hotel, it just made me feel good and at home. That magical feeling just wasn't there when I stayed at Pop, hopefully I can find it at Coronado Springs this coming May.

9. What is your least favorite place you have stayed at and why? (It doesn't necessarily have to be a bad place, it's just that maybe out of all your list of favorites, this would be your least favorite)::

Pop, it wasn't bad by any means but it didn't have that special magic for me that Wilderness Lodge held. Maybe I am just a hotel snob? :confused3

MAGIC KINGDOM

10. What is your favorite attraction in the MK?

Mickey's Philharmagic followed up by Splash Mountain.

11. What is your least favorite attraction in the MK?

Country Bears. Only been to it once, couldn't make out what the bears were meant to be saying most of the time and when I could I couldn't help but think some of the song choices were a bit inappropriate for an attraction in the Magic Kingdom.

12. Tell me a random memory you have involving the MK.

Well, my most memorable MK moment would have to be the rat incident. Nothing says "magical moment" like a rat trying to climb its way up your leg. :scared1:

13. What is your favorite place to eat in the MK?

Table Service = The Plaza - so delicious! Can't wait to return.

Counter Service = Pinocchio's - The food is good and it is fun getting to watch the boats go by in It's A Small World while eating lunch. Wish they hadn't taken the cannoli off the dessert menu. :guilty:

EPCOT

14. What is your favorite attraction in Epcot?

Ride = Soarin

Show = World Showcase Players

15. What is your least favorite attraction in Epcot?

Ellen's Universe of Energy = snooze fest

16. Tell me a random memory you have involving Epcot.

I loved the meet and greet with Pooh and friends that I had in May 2009 in the Toy Shop in England. It was so much fun and I loved being able to share it with my Mom and Rosie, we were laughing so hard!

17. What is your favorite place to eat in Epcot?

For now I would have to say Chefs de France for a Table Service (haven't eaten anywhere else).

For counter service/snacks, the bakery in Norway. Cloudberry Horns are to die for!

18. What is your favorite country in the World Showcase?

I love them all!

HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS

Rock N' Roller Coaster tied with Toy Story Mania

20. What is your least favorite attraction in HS?

Lights, Motors, Action

21. Tell me a random memory you have involving HS.

Meeting an internet "celebrity" at Star Wars Weekends. Didn't know she was "famous" at the time but found out later. Crazy Star Wars lady was definitely memorable.

22. What is your favorite place to eat in HS?

Table Service = Sci-Fi - good burger, super yummy shakes and fun atmosphere.

Counter Service = Pizza Planet

23. Do you watch the Citizens of Hollywood?

Only stopped once to watch but was in a hurry so didn't see the whole skit.

Expedition Everest!

25. What is your least favorite attraction in the AK?

It's Tough to Be a Bug

26. Tell me a random memory you have involving the AK.

The twenty minutes we spent watching the hippo be really friendly and show off for us.

27. What is your favorite place to eat in the AK?

Don't really have a favourite so I will just go with Pizzafari.

RANDOMS

39. What is one thing you MUST do every time you go to Disney?

Hmmm, not really sure, I don't really have any "must-do's". I like pretty much everything and I know that I will always be coming back in the future so I don't stress if I don't get something done.

I have very hazy memories of the 89 trip to Disneyland, not exactly clear memories but more like memories of feelings.

Disneyland but I am dying to visit Tokyo Disney!

48. Have you ever had to explain your love for Disney to someone who just didn't "get" it?

Nope, my friends may think it is a little strange but they never question me about it.

49. Blasphemous I know, but where is your favorite place to travel outside of Disney?

Europe, I have only been to Italy so far but I love history and traveling and see new and beautiful things.

50. Which Disney character reminds you of you?

Belle, we both love to read.

I see your pictures with kids all around the characters. I'm glad we have official lines now. I also have pictures with other kids around. Not as picture perfect ;)
