Florida living overrated?

Agree some florida schools are pretty bad but not all. Like anywere else there is your bad and good. Only some areas have totally terrible schools.

In my review of the DIS Boards I notice that there is a number of postings about moving to Florida. Many posters describe the goal of moving to Florida, or an actual move. They describe live in Florida as being heaven on earth and that anyone who lives somewhere else is just crazy.

As a frequent winter visitor to many parts of Florida, I wonder what all the hype is all about. Sure Florida is nice as a winter vacation. But for 8 months of the year Florida is:

Hot
Flat
Economically challenged
Full of low paying service jobs
Overpopulated (ever drive from Tampa to Naples?)
Full of crackers and rednecks
Has lots of crime
Generally Poor schools
Unresponsive government
Tons of traffic
Poor mass transit
Hurricanes
Forest Fires

I could go on and on!

What is the appeal of Florida, other than mild winter weather and the beach?

Please stay where you are, or if you plan to move, don't move to Florida.

where oh where is the OP from so I can tell him how what I think of where he lives....

and if anyone has driven in North Florida it is far from flat....on our drive to Gainesville up I-75, there are plenty of hills...not it isn't mountainous but not flat either....

as far as the "cracker and redneck" comment...I won't even touch that....RUDE!

Florida sounds great to me. We live in Louisiana. We have the crooked political system, the poor school systems, (both quality and money) the heat, the bugs, the flat landscape, and the rednecks. We don't have a good economy, WDW, white sandy beaches, or good jobs. I would love to move to Florida if only we hadn't lived in Louisiana so long we can't afford to.

FWIW, I love Louisiana and and the people who live there are wonderful and friendly. There wasn't one "Mom and Pop" store we didn't go into that didn't offer our DD a lollipop or have something nice to say to her. She was only 5 years old when we were in New Orleans, and she still remembers the people there.

Louisiana is a great place and don't get me started on the food. :)

Full of crackers and rednecks
:confused3
What was that for????
RUDE!!!
Since our roadways are so full of traveling rednecks and crackers who are uneducated, poor, 7-11 clerks, it won't hurt our feelings one bit if you NEVER came to visit us!!!!! You probably couldn't get through the roads anyways since we have all of our forests burning, probably due to the hurricanes......

I would never want to move to Florida. For one thing I like my 4 seasons. I can't give up my snow. I also don't want to be that close to WDW. It is my favorite place to visit and I want to keep it that way. I enjoy staying onsite. If we moved to Florida then DH would want to just come home at the end of the day!

:rotfl:

Actually--the hurricanes get ordered to help put out the forest fires.

People in Florida that don't like me tell my boss I'm overweight and I get fired?

I noticed you didn't post where you live. I bet I could name any number of things about your location that are negative. I love living in Florida. Yes, the weather is hot in the summer months. It is hot during the summer in a lot of the U.S. The winter months are wonderful. There is a ton of things to do in Florida within a very short distance. I can go to the Gulf or to the Atlantic in a matter of an hour. I could eat at a different restaurant every night for years. The wildlife is amazing. I won't go on, but each to their own.

I take offense to the "Full of crackers and rednecks" statement. I've been here over 32 years, and the Crackers I know are gracious, well mannered Florida loving people with a real appreciation for how our state was before the influx of out-of-staters in the past 20 years.

"Generally poor schools"? I'd like to know where that info is from. Our county has the number one schools in the state, as well as multilple National Merit Scholars every year. Did you know that the University of Florida is second to only Harvard for the number of National Merit Scholars attending universities? There must be something bringing them here besides the heat, crime, traffic, etc.

Yes, and we Floridians know all about the opinionated people who invade our towns every year escaping from all the things they dislike about their "hometowns". Unfortunately, fewer of them return home after their great winter here and we're stuck with them and their notions of how much better things are where they used to live. It makes us wonder why they ever came here in the first place.

I love Louisiana too. I definitely LOVE the food and the people are super. I also enjoy the history and some of the little towns. But I can see where the Louisiana resident is coming from.

I also really love Arkansas. An extremely beautiful state and some of the nicest people I've ever seen. But of course, their economy isn't the greatest everywhere from what I'm told.

Nowhere is perfect. As it is, I'd rather stay put in Texas than go anywhere else right now. :)

You forgot the one where they thought black people were not treated equally as guests at Disney.............This person loves to stir the pot and must be someone who loves to sit back and watch the chaos since they have not been back on this thread to post to any of our posts other than their alter ego questioner

I was down there 15 years. It was a good/pretty area. However, I had DS in a private school. Public elem near us was rated "C". But he was in the private school long before that. All depends what you like. Boca Raton was very nice the entire time, never left the town. But like everywhere else, it was getting over developed and more expensive. I was long overdue for a change. When you're anywhere for years, you eventually need a change. I missed the mountains. At least they're within driving distance an hour or so of where I live now. Haven't been there once in the past year. But I'm at the beach a LOT!!! A lot more than I ever was when in FL! :teeth:

My cousin and my Dad's friend both live there. Beautiful town.

All the cool people live there :rolleyes1 Seriously, just last night we were talking about how different it is here than in other parts of FL. For one thing, I don't see the thunderstorms that everyone talks about. The weather here is no different that it was in MA in the summer. The schools here are good, and the attitude here seems pretty liberal/laid-back. Love it!!

If you think FL is bad go check out AL...esp. Mobile. They have the lowest property tax in the nation, a state income tax, 9% sales tax on everything you buy and 10% tax eating out and etc and still they have the worse public school system, roads and etc. Economy is terrible.

We love FL esp the Tampa area...kinda biased as I live there.... ;)

The OP forgot to list in the first post the elderly drivers who insist on driving in the left hand lane going 10 mph BELOW the posted speed limit during the morning commute (or any other time, actually).

Really I can't wait to get out, and I think I live in a nice part of Florida. And yes I know about the University of Florida. I graduated from there. GO GATORS. UF and WDW are really the only worthwhile things in this state (oh and maybe Key West). ;)
