Florida living overrated?

Actually the term Redneck originated in Scotland and has religious connotations. When the Church of England was formed a Presbitarian (I think) minister was so opposed to it that he and numerous others signed a pact to continue to practice their faith. They were so serious about it that they signed with their own blood. They then wore pieces of cloth around their necks that had been collored with the blood, hence the derivation of the term Redneck. When many Scots immigrated to America they settled in the rural areas of the South and the name stuck.

Very interesting! I'd never heard that. Will definitely pass that on to my dad as his family originates from Scotland.

In the "Old South" this is what we were told: The term "redneck" came from farmers who toiled their lifetime out in the hot sun. It was explained that because most were dirt poor and held no formal education they had to rely on doing backbreaking work to make a living. Formally educated "gentlemen" never stooped to backbreaking work out in the hot sun, getting dirt on their hands and a "redneck" from the sun. This, supposedly, was the first of many ways to tell a redneck from a true gentleman. :confused3

That is cool lillygator!

I want to go back--but I feel soooo oooolllldddd!!!

That reminds me--must get cable so I can see ALL gator games!

OK, I officially feel better that we are not the only people in the world without cable :rotfl: Doesn't cable here seem very expensive? I'll admit that I do miss HGTV, but I'm just too cheap to pay $45 a month for cable!

I still stand by my comments about Florida and especially the ones about Florida Crackers and Rednecks.

Absolutely nothing wrong with being a Florida Cracker, and Rednecks can be found everywhere. Redneck is all in the attitude. ;)

THANK YOU!

So happy to hear that you are not miserable, Conversationist! :flower:

Encouraging the exchange of ideas and opinions is a noble goal.

However, I can only hope that in your pursuit of a stimulating exchange of ideas, perhaps you did not fully realize how denigrating and derogatory (to some people) your statement that Florida is "full of crackers and rednecks" sounds? :sad1:

I was very offended by the OP calling FL Rednecks and Crackers.......with both the definitions of rednecks that have been explained thus far, I don't think it is something to be ashamed of............hard workers should never be ashamed! But thanks to Jeff Foxworthy most people think rednecks are people with very little education and poor upbringing but considering that most Floridians hail from other areas and are so called well educated how can we be rednecks!

True! Floridians are NOT SOUTHERN! DH's family came to FL around 1900. All the people here at that time (very few) were from the north and were wealthy and educated. If one studies the history of FL they'll see that it is NOT a part of the "old south" but is often times confused with it due to its geographical location. Even now most of my neighbors are from the northeast and hold professional or executive positions of some sort. I don't, however, feel offended over the OP referring to Floridians as "rednecks" or "crackers" as I'm not one. There's no doubt about that as soon as one meets me!

I realize that Foxworthy is only trying to make a buck and at times IS funny, but I don't think he does "his people" a lick of good in the eyes of the rest of America. I think he portrays southeners as dumb, poor, lazy and dirty. Some are! But take a look around any place in America. What you see there you see here as well. People are people and they're going to live the way they wish or their finances dictate. ::yes::

Yes, there is more than one person that feels that way about the south. I work with one of them. She's from New Jersey and curses the south.

The KKK is alive and well in FL. New teacher was teaching about diversity in her class. She was fired. The parent of one of the kids in her class was the head of the KKK.

::yes:: Why people feel like they need to create a bunch of different identities is beyond me.

What :confused3 Was that here on the Space Coast? How can you not be allowed to teach about diversity? Isn't it against freedom of speech to fire a teaher over that :confused3

I don't find him the least bit derogatory....

Now about the black comics that use all the "naughty" taboo words to describe themselves. Now that is derogatory!

Diversity is okay--saying that it is "okay" to share hate messages, probably not so okay--depending upon the age of the class and the subject matter at hand.

A debate class or history class in relation to freedom of speech!

Embracing a culture that does illegal things----not so okay.

It's all in the approach.

They create different identities so they have some one who agrees with themselves! At least in their mind!

It was in the northern part of FL. She was also teaching about MLK and other black leaders. She was fired the next day. She did not want to argue the matter. I would have been so angry I would have been on Oprah telling the story. I just can't believe that goes on in this day and age. I had no idea the KKK still existed. It's scary.

All in the presentation I guess...how old were the kids and what did she say and when did she say it?

Probably talking about the KKK during Black History Month for example as an "alternative" viewpoint.

[not condoning/not comdemning...just trying to get a better picture--i.e. talking about skinheads and the benefits of the swastika and how Hitler was a nice person--during Hannukah.....would be a problem as well b/c it is the inappropriate context].

Teacher was white. Was teaching about black leaders. Nothing inappropriate. Head of KKK did not approve. His kid was in her class. This just happened this year.

I thought you said she talked about the KKK. :confused3

If not--then simply talking about black leaders and getting fired for it is wrong....and personally--she SHOULD have stood up for herself for wrongful termination.

(what was the class?)

Yes she should have stood up for herself. But she was a brand new teacher and this was her first job. I don't remember what the class was.

There is only 1 thing that would keep me from moving to Florida and the OP didn't mention it. It's the crocs. There is NO way I want one of critters in my back yard! :scared1:
