Florida living overrated?

I made the move into what was originally going to be a vacation home for a number of reasons. Sure it's beastly hot for about four months out of the year, but it's within a few degrees of the same temp and humidity of where I moved from (NJ) right now, and there are times that it's HOTTER in NJ than here! For me the appeal is green year round, palm trees out my door, and a more laid back attitude.

Let's see...flat. That's a joke. I'm 240 feet above sea level in the rolling hills of Lake County. Maybe you should visit it sometime, it's beautiful here.

It's no more economically challenged than many other states.

There are plenty of well paying jobs here in the medical, technical, legal, and other assorted fields. If you're a service worker here you're going to make the same as a service worker in Osh Kosh. Service workers just don't make much. There are as many opportunities for people here as anywhere, if not more.

Overpopulated? HAHAHA! Ever been to Bergen County NJ?

"Full of crackers and rednecks" What a nasty, racist comment! There are ignorant people everywhere--just watch a few episodes of COPS.

The crime rate in the town I live in now is about the same as where I lived before I moved here. You want high crime? Go hang out in Camden, NJ for a few hours.

Generally Poor schools--I'll give you that, FL schools leave much to be desired, although there are some outstanding schools here as well. We waited until our son graduated prior to moving.

Unresponsive government, I"m not sure about this either. We had a problem with something when we moved here, my husband sent an e-mail to our mayor's office and it was resolved by 10:00am the next business day! That was beyond responsive in our opinion. Additionally they went a step further and did something totally unneccessary to try to make up for our inconvience.

Tons of traffic--When was the last time you drove in DC, NYC, Philly, Chicago, Boston, LA, Dallas, St. Louis, etc. Yes, the traffic can be heavy, but no worse than in other major cities.

Poor mass transit--I can't speak for the rest of FL, but Orlando has a pretty well designed bus system.

Hurricanes--and if you live in CA you have earthquakes, New England gets Nor'Easters, Mid Atlantic also gets hurricanes (I was in Floyd in NJ a few years back), and the midwest gets tweisters. Face it, there are very few areas that never are affected by natural disasters.

Forest Fires--See above.

I think it's a wonderful place to live during the winter - and that's just what I'm hoping to do this coming winter.. However, I would not want to live there in the summer.. I don't tolerate heat and humidity very well and although I know most folks stay inside with the a/c on, all it would take is one hurricane and/or tornado to knock the power out for several days (sometimes weeks) and I would be done for.. :(

That's what generators are for.

Well, there are positives and negatives about every place. I have to tell you, the more winters I spend up here in the North, the better Florida looks, at least in the winter.

I could learn to love the "snowbird" lifestyle!!!

This is exactly what I tell my DH every winter!!

True - and for a day or two, that would be fine.. However, I wouldn't want to have to run one for a week - or several weeks.. :flower:

Tell you what...DH and I'll move out of FL in 4 years and make room for a Diser family. We're even getting our house all spruced up for you. You'll love it!

I grew up on the west coast of Florida, the St.Petersburg area. I lived there for 32 years. I love the beaches, the gulf, and the bay. Being able to watch the sunset every day is awesome. Having lived there so many years, I took it for granted. Now that I've been gone for ten years, I am now able to look at it with "fresh" eyes. I go back at least twice a year, and the first thing that I now notice is how blue the sky is.

Okay--have to respond for real now.....

The midwest has temps in the 100s...hardly ever gets to that at the beach.

And the lack of a state income tax is pretty nice.

And I do get Florida Resident Discounts at Disney.

Hey! It's hot here in Chicago, but go downtown to the lake and cool off!! (i must say, i'm ready for summer to be over)

And there is nothing, I repeat nothing better than fall here in Chicago and all around Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

And downtown is gorgeous when it snows. :teeth: and then there's the culture, the nightlife..... :rotfl:

I have a pool--don't need to go anywhere :cool1: .

Hey I love Chicago, and spent most of my life in Wisconsin (Door County) and yes I miss the Fall. And I loved all the festivals on the lakeshore and of course all the great food. But I also remember standing out on the EL plaza waiting for a train to get to work and it was 60 below zero with the wind chill!
There is no place perfect,

yeah, that wind can get ya!! :cold:

but you know human nature, as soon as it gets hot here, and it's been horrible with the humidity lately, you wish for the cold!! and vice-versa! :rotfl:

You forgot to put horrible bugs on the list of things to hate in FL. Fire ants, palmetto bugs (giant flying cockroaches is more like it), many other types of cockroaches, banana spiders, scorpions, and so on, and so on. I lived for 2 years in Bradenton and was so happy to move back to MA. It just wasn't for me.

ChrissyK, I don't know where you lived in MA, but it is nowhere near as hot here in summer as it is in FL.

Central MA. I agree that the Berkshires may not get as hot as Central MA in the summer. It was BLAZING hot there for several summers. We were lucky that we had FHA and could add central AC. Many of our friends are not so lucky...they either suffer through it or they use $$$ to run window units.

As for the bugs...we have a lawn spray service and an inside service, and we have no bug problems. In MA, we had both bug and rodent problems. It was AWFUL! We were the exterminator's best customers there :rotfl:

You can't escape it in non-airconditioned New England, you can in Fla.

Yep, that about sums it up!

You're right. FL is a horrible place! Stay away everyone! ;)

Florida sounds great to me. We live in Louisiana. We have the crooked political system, the poor school systems, (both quality and money) the heat, the bugs, the flat landscape, and the rednecks. We don't have a good economy, WDW, white sandy beaches, or good jobs. I would love to move to Florida if only we hadn't lived in Louisiana so long we can't afford to.

*shrug* FL living isn't for everyone. Just like northern living isn't for everyone. My cousin has been in Indiatlantic for 10yrs now and adores it and will never move back. I lived in Tampa for 18 mos and Clearwater for 2 years and hated it for a lot of the reasons the OP mentioned ( note: I said a lot - not all) and you couldn't pay me to move back.

When I first moved to FL I was so excited and thought I would never move back to cold snowy New England. Guess what? After about 2 yrs I had enough of endless summers where even the afternoon thunderstorms wouldn't cool you off and forget about cooling off in the ocean. It just wasn't for me. I guess I'm just tired of the snarky comments on this board insinuating how stupid we Northerners are and how crazy we are for staying here and *gasp* even liking it! Just because your town or your neighborhood was a certain way doesn't mean the whole state or the whole region was like that. No place is paradise for everyone so let's not make digs at people for where they choose to call home, 'k?

(that's where I live!)

edited to add: no "t" in Indialantic :p

My cousin and my Dad's friend both live there. Beautiful town.
