FLL airport - Shooting today at 1 pm - 9 wounded

Seems like a bunch of misinformation floating around on this thread today. Probably a result of crappy reporting on legitimate news sites. Seems like lately they aren't much more accurate than the fake news sites.
In this case I'm kinda glad I didn't look at my local news on my phone til later in the day. They had already worked out the whole Canadian oops, the name of the suspect, the number of victims who died, the number of victims that were injured, and several other things. If I had looked early on I think I would have been very confused as the details were being updated.

The bottom line is that essentially ANYONE can do essentially ANYTHING if they truly desire. To what end will certainly vary, and it will most likely be the last act of that person in many cases, but we're silly to think that a protocol here or a policy there is going to do the trick.

Well, there is armed security to address the possibility of such incidents. Kind of sad in a way, but I took the family to Chuck E Cheese tonight, and they had an armed security guard on site. Looked like he carried a revolver, but also had heavy body armor. He was actually rather pleasant to everyone, but there was no mistaking why he was there.

Confused news reporting isn't new. I remember when President Regan was shot, a lot of misinformation was given that day regarding the seriousness of his condition. (That may have been intentional to keep the American people from panicking.) After Hurricane Katrina, President Bush complimented emergency management on the fine job they were doing, even while people were rioting at the Superdome. It takes awhile for the dust to settle and the facts to come out.

On another note, today our cruise travel agent was scheduled to fly into Fort Lauderdale but had a premonition not to go. She's thanking her lucky stars she rescheduled for tomorrow.

Handguns are illegal in Canada unless you are a police officer or work for Brinks etc. Security guards are not armed. I was confused when I first read the early reports because I knew ammunition is not permitted on flights. Strange how two countries can be do close, yet so far apart on issues like this.

Our local CBS affiliate (WBZ) just said on our news

- that the shooter was in the National Guard

- that his brother said that in 2016, he told people he was being "forced to fight for ISIS"

- that he had child porn charges against him a few years back*

- and that the guns and ammo he used were transported on the airline legally

* ETA there may be some confusion about the porn charges as that could be another person of the same name

Point 2 is most concerning. He didn't just tell "people," he actually walked into an FBI office in Anchorage and told them he was being forced to fight for ISIS. If that is actually true, heads need to roll!

The entire health system/country/state/family unit needs to deal with mental illness differently. Education is paramount. It is stigmatized, under funded, and most people don't even recognize the symptoms never mind reach out or get the help they desperately need as it's a very difficult system to navigate.

It is a heartbreaking situation for many families and ultimately without proper treatment it gets worse and affects a larger group of people than the immediate family. Case in point... if what they are reporting is accurate ( and who knows with our news outlets credibility).
medical/mental/treatment is all private... the public will likely Not know or get too many details on that aspect.
Meanwhile prayers for all those affected. It IS a changed world, country we now live in. These horrible occurrences are becoming More commonplace... I mean IMHO it's should not be the "new normal" that violence within our country ( never mind the world) has escalated exponentially. Sad and frustrating... our poor kids//grandkids what a mess :(

Yeah I certaintly know that and commented in the past on the boards regarding media information. Sometimes they are going based on what they have and running with it, sometimes it's poor reporting and sometimes it's outright biases. Headlines are also designed to grab your attention but also can be misleading.

That's good news about your travel agent though :)

The crazy part of it is they sent him to a facility and he checked himself in under his own will, although I'm now learning that is how police write that but it isn't always true. He was getting treatment off and on so what happened to cause this? We may never know what the break was.

He's had his 15 minutes ..
I'd like to hear how those injured and in hospital are doing.
And prayers to the families of those that died in the attack. Heartbreaking.

Wow. An armed guard at Chuck E Cheese? What a sad, terrified county we have become.

There is often an armed police officer at the library location near me. The reason though is because it is very close to multiple County buildings like the Treasury, the County's Courthouse but also the County's jail among other County department buildings so it makes sense. While I appreciate the security of it the first time I went into that library location I was a little startled that there was an armed police officer there. That surrounding area though is still safe though I believe it's more of a precaution than anything.

It was a different feeling entirely when my husband and I went to a bank branch in Downtown KCMO after getting our marriage license (as we were getting married in MO) several years ago and the bank staff was behind thick bulletproof glass and several armed police officers that greet you at the door...that is still the only bank location I have ever been into that has that kind of security. But it is close to City buildings like the Courthouse, the police department, City Hall, etc. Still though was not expecting bulletproof glass..armed police officers sure but not the bulletproof glass.

Gang members have kids too. I think they also worry about armed robberies.

Have you seen videos of brawls at Chuck E. Cheese locations? It could be for that reason and the company they hired happens to send a fully armed guard.

But given how sick people can be--it's probably also for reasons of dealing with an active shooter. Very sad indeed.

Not according to Louis Armstrong

I get you're being facetious, but don't find humor in a situation like this. I was merely expressing my dismay at yet another "random" act of violence. There are many serious issues in our society that need to be addressed, with no simple answers. Can't get into politics, so I won't comment further.

Brawls at Chuck E Cheese, it's just bizarre.
And on a related issue-I've been so surprised at the numbers of people who (apparently honestly) regularly describe themselves as angry. I would think that chronic, unrelenting anger is likely indicative of some kind of a mood disorder.
It's kind of frightening how quickly some are set off and choose to immediately react in socially unacceptable ways, even right in front of their own kids.
We need to get a handle on mental health issues, but how?

I look at so many people who say they're furious and I think, "what have you really got to be so angry about?" I mean to the point of irrationality. Can't get into politics/religion so I won't comment further. I also agree this really enters into mental health territory. Not talking about Santiago which is obvious, but the level of fury/hate/anger on those who supposedly are "normal".

I didn't take the post as facetious at all. I agree with them. Our country is very safe even though you might not believe it since these are plastered all over the news 24/7. These shootings are extremely rare. What isn't rare unfortunately are car accidents. Too many needless deaths on our roads.
