FLL airport - Shooting today at 1 pm - 9 wounded

Have you seen videos of brawls at Chuck E. Cheese locations? It could be for that reason and the company they hired happens to send a fully armed guard.

But given how sick people can be--it's probably also for reasons of dealing with an active shooter. Very sad indeed.

I wouldn't go near one of those Chuck E. Cheese places. Seems like they attract the wrong element. The armed guard doesn't surprise me at all.

A police officer I know used to take his son to a local business for a teen night they have. One Friday night when he was dropping off his son there was an armed officer at the door. He took his son home and made some calls knowing that the business wouldn't pay to have an officer there for no reason. As it turns out there had been some issues and he wouldn't let his son go back.

I have often wondered why the baggage claim areas are not more secure. I was very surprised at what seemed to be a lack of security at ATL and Nashville was the most secure I have been in.

I've been to a few airports where only ticketed passengers were allowed in baggage claim, and/or airport employees matched up claim checks with luggage tags. Some of these airports seem to have discontinued them. International luggage claim is different, since they don't want non-passengers there before Customs. San Francisco International Airport has a few airlines that primarily use the international terminal for domestic flights. They have two separate baggage claim areas, with both having Customs setups. One is typically left for domestic arrivals. I don't they allow non-passengers in.

If anything, I'd hope police would patrol the baggage areas simply to look out for luggage thieves. They tend to notice the same perps showing up every day.

Looks like there were some updates, from today. The FBI gave a press conference.

They think

- he traveled there specifically to do this, but they don't yet know why; they have not ruled out terrorism

- the bag with the gun was the only luggage he had

- they don't think there were any arguments on the plane

- he apparently did have child porn charges filed against him at some point

- he also was charged with domestic violence against his girlfriend, whom he had a baby with in September

Handguns are illegal in Canada unless you are a police officer or work for Brinks etc. Security guards are not armed. I was confused when I first read the early reports because I knew ammunition is not permitted on flights. Strange how two countries can be do close, yet so far apart on issues like this.

Handguns are NOT illegal for civilians in Canada. They are restricted. Basically, almost anyone can buy one, but they must be registered & the licensing/purchasing process is tougher than with a rifle. Handgun ownership in Canada is trending upwards (even as long gun ownership is trending down). Roughly 3% of Canadian households report having at least one handgun.

Oddly enough, in some ways Canada is less restrictive than the US. The US restricted machine guns in 1934, Canada 17 years later. Assault-style weapons are much easier to buy in Ontario & most Western provinces than NY, NJ, CT, and probably a few other states.

I didn't take the post as facetious at all. I agree with them. Our country is very safe even though you might not believe it since these are plastered all over the news 24/7. These shootings are extremely rare. What isn't rare unfortunately are car accidents. Too many needless deaths on our roads.

OK, well the reply to my OP was presumably in reference to a song about a wonderful world full of love. Sounds great, but it's the hatred that causes problems.

Safety is a relative concept. I agree we're generally safer in the US than many other countries. However, the incidence of mass shootings in public has risen significantly since the 1980's. Car accidents are a completely different issue; you can't compare them to intentional acts of violence.

I look at so many people who say they're furious and I think, "what have you really got to be so angry about?" I mean to the point of irrationality. Can't get into politics/religion so I won't comment further. I also agree this really enters into mental health territory. Not talking about Santiago which is obvious, but the level of fury/hate/anger on those who supposedly are "normal".

Agreed, there's too much anger all around in the U.S....I think it's just a lack of proper upbringing, what used to be called the rat race, everyone wants to be rich/famous or at least look like it, reality TV shows making everyone look like it's ok to be loud, angry and upset over every little thing, people who feel entitled, the cultural mixing, lack of moral education in the home, etc.

What do you mean by cultural mixing?

I believe it was a handgun. Are those generally used for hunting (animals)? (Serious question, I have no idea. I imagine they would need a rifle as well, or a bow and arrow or such.)

My knowledge of guns basically comes from "Border Security" :) But, I wouldn't think that handguns would be used for hunting (and I didn't think that they were legal in Canada, without a license at least).

This aircraft did not go through Canada and was not a Canadian aircraft.
I'm not sure where that spin began...

Not sure where the whole guns are only flown for hunting came from. My ex & I often flew with guns to shoots. People don't just hunt they also do competitive shooting. He apparently flew "over" Canada so no need to be licensed there.

Vehicles can be used for mass murder too. Bastille Day in Nice or Christmas Matket in Berlin...both incidents in the last six months (to name a couple) Not sure, if they we're licensed drivers.

Point..where there is a will, there's a way.

Point 2 is most concerning. He didn't just tell "people," he actually walked into an FBI office in Anchorage and told them he was being forced to fight for ISIS. If that is actually true, heads need to roll!

What would you have them do? Do you know how many whacks show up at police departments every day? If they locked everyone who needs aluminum foil on their heads up there would be no room for actual criminals.

Yeah he turned out to be an actual shooter but short of being psychic, law enforcement can only actually follow real laws.

Yes, of course that is true. The post I was replying to mentioned car accidents and deaths on the roads. The incidents in Europe you named were not accidents.

Still, it's not like we should sit by and allow this to happen without taking any measures to prevent violence and terrorism.

I don't think racism truly covers the full spectrum of the issue, but that's for another thread :)

That's true. I take it to mean different cultures have different behaviors that are considered socially acceptable and some may even be in opposition to the majority culture. Racism has nothing to do with it as the differing cultures could contain people of the same race.

I think that the issue we have in the US is much deeper and way more complicated than your post would indicate. I would begin with the 24/7 media outlets, both right and left leaning, all spewing "news" that is backed up by nothing, and much of which is directed at those people who want their own POV validated. People who are frustrated, angry, or afraid have all of those emotions ratcheted up until they no longer manage their actions.

WE also have a real problem with how we manage mental health in this Country. We all know someone who is "not right", but we can do nothing. Even if we could pinpoint what was wrong, we would be powerless to address it. WE cannot force someone to take medication even if that person has access to it or the proper health care to deal with any emotional or mental health problem. One of my dearest friends son is powder keg that will explode at any time She has moved Heaven and Earth to help him, but is not legally able to do so. Thank God we live in a small town and our law enforcement officers are doing all they can to keep him and by extension others, safe.

Now add racism, bigotry, stress, and fear of anyone who is "different" into the constantly percolating powder keg that soem people are, and you end up with violence that explodes in one way or another. It may be a mass shooting, instigating a riot, or beating and torturing a man with special needs, but it is a violent reaction to an environment that stimulates it. I have no idea what the answer is but I do know we cannot say that it is cultural mixing" lack of proper upbringing, or envy.
