...why did they call the big boat "the launch"? I've lived my whole life in Florida, in a coastal town, and have NEVER heard anyone call a boat a "launch".

Should government employees be allowing non-employees (i.e. their minor kids) to drive the government boats?

LOL. I have to say that my Dad was a federal employee in the 60's, and the rules WERE a lot looser then. It wasn't really unusual for folks who worked in the boonies to have their older kids helping out, especially those who had jobs that provided family housing.

The launch thing is an old Navy term. It was primarily used for 26' craft that were fitted to carry passengers on short runs; usually as harbor transport. Odds are that one of the writers was ex-Navy.

One of the early episodes showed a Coast Guard Helicopter coming to someone's assistance...when it showed a close-up of the pilot (who did not look like your typical military aviator) his helmet had US Navy on the forehead. Perhaps a little nod the Navy...
