Flip Video camera

I use an external hard drive made by Wolverine that has card slots and connects by usb. That is the only way I know how. Those cost as much as a FLIP and you would not be able to see until you get home. I do not have a Flip so I do not know if that would even work or do you "process" it when you download!

I wish my question was more profound... anyhoo... My DD got a Flip for her birthday. you apparently have 2 hours of time to burn up and then you have to download to a lap/desktop. I don't feel like lugging a laptop to WDW -so - is there somewhere on property to download to a disk or some other option?

They are great cameras for what they do, but I am not aware of any place to do that. That is one of it's drawbacks. Quick and easy but limited as to how to get off the camera.

This is where the 2 lb 9" netbooks come in handy! They are great for downloading from Flip or other cameras.

My in-laws just gave me a Flip Mino HD, which I must admit is a great little video camera. I think it will get a lot more use than our normal video camera.

However - a question. They can only take 1 hour of video, which is not an issue if we are at home and can use our computer asap. Does anyone know if you can download the videos to a flashcard? We don't have a laptop, so was thinking about what to do while travelling - I'll use up 1 hr of video on the flight down!

Thanks!

The flash card was DH's idea - I don't see how it can work, but will ask at our local electronics store when I get the chance. The FLIP is a great little gizmo, but without a laptop I can't see it being any good away from home. I e-mailed tech help at FLIP and they said it's been done, however they couldn't recommend any particular products - they suggested I check out a message board, and thought of this one immediately!

Maybe I can drop hints to the inlaws and get a laptop next :rotfl:. No - wouldn't dare! They were great to get it for me, and it is really convenient to take anywhere and use easily, but it won't replace our old video camera when we travel, like I'd originally thought. The zoom is not very good either, so there are some limitations.

Thanks for your reply Dawn. If I get any further info, I'll be sure to post it.

You may have seen the post I deleted. I figured it was pointless to really comment because I really have no idea what I am talking about! :rotfl:

Yes, I did see the original post before you deleted it, so thanks for clearing that up Dawn - if not, it looks like I was having an imaginary conversation with you .

Netbook! We carry a 9" 2 lb Asus 900 to backup photos and video. For the photos we also carry a tiny WD external hard drive since the little Asus only has 16 GB of sloid state hard drive. I have seen refurbished Asus 900's for under $200.

We leave for WDW in less than 2 weeks -- was just looking at the Flip video camera for our trip. I've searched this forum for some comments on it but there really aren't any recent reviews. Anything have thoughts/opinions on the Flip?

Don't buy the Flip unless you want to bring your laptop on vacation too. You cannot empty out the Flip memory to take more video unless you have a computer; you cannot interchange memory cards and you cannot use stand alone disk drives.

I've found 2 hours of video to be plenty on a 5+ day vacation. I do a lot of stopping and starting with the intention of editing it down when I get home.

All depends on your style.

Hello all-- resident new person to the boards and cameras lol-- has anyone used the flip video camera's in the parks? Ive used it around the house for a few months and its great.. HD video, but not a ton of zoom on it, and I didnt know if anyone had some experiences that could share. Thanks!

It's all I took to Maui and all our latest trips (video wise). I have more camera gear I care about so video is much less important to me. The quality is fine for my standards and needs.

How is it in low light? I've been debating getting one since they are so small and cheap. I love that at 720p I don't have to worry about converting the video before uploading too.

You must bring your laptop if you plan to shoot more video than it holds since no one else can burn a DVD or put in another memory card for you.

Kodak's version of the flip, the Zi8, has an SD slot, stabilization and shoots 1080p.
