THE days of passengers being able to carry luggage on to planes for free could be numbered with the Flight Attendants Association of Australia pushing for an overhaul of current baggage arrangements by airlines.
Cabin crew claim they are regularly being injured and running out of space in the aircraft, as passengers go to great lengths to avoid the hassle and expense of checking in their bags.
Jo-Ann Davidson from the FAAA said they were planning a New Year campaign targeting airlines and regulatory bodies, to get a review of cabin luggage and changes to incentives to carry-on.
"We'd like to see a standard applied throughout the whole industry so there's no one airline saying they've got a disadvantage because some are allowing 10kg, and some allowing two bags," said Ms Davidson.
"We want a standard that's manageable for the cabin crew, especially for those flying on smaller aircraft where overhead lockers are smaller."
She said much of the problem lay with airlines themselves, for failing to strictly impose weight restrictions on carry on luggage.
Most of the time, passengers are permitted to carry on luggage of any weight providing it is not oversized.
Ms Davidson said this was causing real challenges for cabin crew, and putting their bodies on the line.
"The crew are usually running around at the last minute to stow and lift bags. It is becoming a huge issue for crew, and injuries are being sustained," she said.
With charges for check-in luggage ranging from $20 for a second bag on Qantas to potentially hundreds of dollars for excess baggage, Ms Davidson said passengers were now wanting to "bring on the kitchen sink" to avoid extra costs.
"Businessmen don't want to wait at the end of the flight for their bag, that's understandable," she said.
"But it becomes a problem when 150 people want the same."
In the US the problem is so great, airlines have been forced to introduce a policy of first-in best dressed, requiring some passengers to check in their luggage at their own expense when room for carry-on runs out.
Any changes are likely to be hard fought though, with airlines earning millions of dollars from ancillary charges such as check in luggage fees.
In 2011-12, the Qantas Group increased its ancillary earnings from $90 million to $346 million.
Virgin Australia also made more money out of passengers through charges related to baggage, meals, drinks, seat selection and lounge membership pulling in $417.9 million, up from $313.3 million.
Ms Davidson said they would seek an industry-wide standard for carry on luggage, and changes in incentives.
"It cannot continue the way it is," she said.

On my soapbox

After just havin done 7 flights in 14 days may I say go flight attendants. On the final leg of my epic journey we were delayed for an hour on the Tarmac whilst they off loaded bags that simply would not fit including a fruit dehydrators and a full size suitcase. Aaaaargh. On one flight we had a not very full day backpack and struggled to find room to the point I put it under my feet with my little handbag. Keepers it makes me mad

And 7kg is so that if in turbulence the locker opens it may not knock you out or cause spinal injuries. I do not want your 18 kg suitcase on my head.

On we'd evening at Brisbane domestic the flight attendants sent all oversized and overweight bags and their owners back downstairs to check it on causing a delay for one particular flight. Good work.

Seriously flying is already the fastest way to go. Add in the 20 mins to get our luggage. Go to the bathroom. Why the rush I mean really.

I step down.

Over to the librarians

Hear hear!

Why is it so hard to play by the rules for some people?

as now I have a kindle and don't need to lug 35 kgs of hard cover books on a flight......I can understand why people don't want to pay fees for checked luggage..but seriously the size of the bags are crazy...someone is going to get killed when one falls out and snaps someones neck!

Love my kindle. In my bag was wallet kindle tickets moisturiser and lip gloss. Oh and DH kindle as he carried my laptop. Simple.

Pack light! ;)

I think the airlines are to blame for some of this. If they weren't money grabbing on our bags, people would check them in. By introducing fees, people will do whatever they can to avoid the fees.

i get so stressed re overhead space...as i don't want to be seated in row 5 and my bag is over row 32......

that's why i always lock my carry on, just in case

We flew Virgin to the Gold Coast and someone asked the hostie to put their bag in the overhead locker. She said No. They weren't allowed due to injury. (she had a stretchy bandage thingy on her wrist). I've never heard this before.

Here's an idea... why don't airlines start including free checked luggage again, then people won't have to try to get out of it. I really can't see how charging for carry-on luggage is going to help, unless it's more than the cost for checked luggage, then it's kind of missing the point...

Could not agree more, they are in part to blame for this. The other part is that if the check in staff actually enforced the size/weight for carry on may also assist.

i work at the airport..its a never ending battle with the passengers who clearly are trying to avoid paying for their excess baggage by sneaking it into their hand carry, thereby creating a safety issue for other passengers and crew
some hand carry i check at the gate can weigh over 17kg, this is from people who have alrady checked in their maximum allowance, then they get all miffed and argue at the gate when they either have to throw it out or pay for excess
we clearly see people hiding hand carry bags at the back of the airport to avoid being asked to weigh them at the check in counter
i would really like to see it enforced more as we always get the same old argument that when thy last flew on blah blah airliens they didnt get treated so badly for having too much luggage!

Agree with lots of points here, I think if airlines stopped charging extra for checked baggage a lot of this would stop - I know I would rather check in rather than lug my carry on all over the airport. But for example if I am going somewhere for a long weekend I only need to take a carry on sized suitcase so it seems silly to pay an extra $50 to check it in. Also agree that the weight/size needs to be enforced better - it'd be pretty easy to make everyone show their carry on bag at check in and have it weighed. An extra minute to have it weighed and tagged in some way to show it is within regulation would save a lot of grief at boarding. Ok you might have some people adding things to the bag after check in but it'd at least stop the oversized bags getting through.
I am yet to experience an internal US flight but I have heard they are shocking for excessive carry on luggage - I am going to be so grumpy if there is no room for our within size and weight limit carry ons

On our internal flights while we were over in the US I ended up very snarky abut the luggage and carryon situation.
We did everything the way we were supposed to, weight limits adhered to, size limits adhered to and some of the stuff I saw people taking in the plane really got up my nose.
The final straw for me was when we had to gate check a bag because all the overhead was taken by ridiculously oversized bags and I ended up in a Mexican standoff with the hostie.

Hostie: "I'm sorry, there is no room left in the overhead, we're going to have to gatecheck it"
Me: "There are breakables in there, I don't want them broken, and I don't want to gatecheck it"
Hostie: "it's not going to fit, the room is all taken up by other bags"
Me: "The room is all taken up by oversized carryons, I've paid for my luggage to be stored underneath, why aren't these people having to pay for their luggage? Enough is enough"
Hostie: "your luggage won't fit"
Me: " I understand that, and I've packed all my breakables in my carryon, soi don't wanting gate checked unless you can guarantee it won't be broken"
Hostie: "I can't guarantee it won't be broken"
Me: "therefore I don't want it gatechecked"
Hostie: "There isn't any space"
Me: "yep, I got that, it won't fit up there, but I don't want my stuff broken"
Brett: "Take my bag, lets move this plane"

Unbelievable...

the usa domestic flights are a nightmare when it comes to overhead space/carry on......I am so annoyed when not only do people lug 3 bags down the aisle but hit you in the head as they go...now after I board I stand against the window until everyone is on board...so over being thumped by idiots who have no concept of space .......bring back the good old days of free checked baggage

I get annoyed by those women (I've only ever seen the women doing it) who come on with their many shopping bags that they probably just bought at the airport, big parcel of Krispy Cremes, plus handbag, jacket, carry on bag! Why can't they just put all of their new clothes into their carry on or in their handbag? I'm sure many of them just like lugging around their brand name paper or plastic bags and thinking how posh they are for splashing the cash while waiting for their flight. I was once on a flight and a family came on with their kids, each had a carry on suitcase plus a nappy bag with the mum and one of the kids had a little fold up dolls pram with her that went in the overhead!
