Okay, when I was checking National for a Monday thru Satuday (March 28 to April 2) rental I was quoted $251 for a compact with all fees included. If I extend the rental from Monday to Monday (March 28 to April 4) I get a quote of $$179.52. Quite a difference. My question is can I book for a week and turn the car in early with no penalty? Thank you

No. Generally you may not turn in a car early and still get the weekly rate, if you keep the car for less time than what the rental company qualifies for the weekly rate.

If the rental company keeps you waiting for a car, and you already have committed to a return time so you can get back and make your return flight, you have a good argument that you should still gett he weekly rate if you qualified in the first place. Point this out at pickup time and even ask them to make out the paperwork a little in advance if the return timing is going to be tight.

I have a ressie booked with National right now for 5 days, and according to the confirmation page, it is a weekly rate.
It states:

One week at $113.00, even though my reservation is for June 1st through June 6th (five full days). I have heard that alot of companies consider 5-7 days a weekly rental. :confused3

Keep in mind that rental car companies use a 24 hour clock. So over 5 24 hour periods may be a weekly rental. However, I would NOT assume that turning a car in early would keep you on the weekly rate. They can and will flip you to the high daily rate which will dump all discounts.
