Just back from a 6 night stay at Port Orleans Riverside (5/31-6/6) and wanted to share a few thoughts/observations.

Our party consists of two adults and we have been to WDW many times, so the intent of this trip was to just relax, eat great food and take in the views/attractions with no rushing around. We have visited Disneyland for the past two years, so haven’t been to WDW since 2011.

I will say that after reading the boards in the weeks prior to our trip, I was expecting it to be one of the worst trips I’ve taken. From reading people’s rants about “pet peeves” and high crowd levels, to non-working FP+ and “rain every day”, I headed down to Florida expecting the worst. We typically travel to WDW in March or September, so June was new to us. Luckily, I was pleasantly surprised.

1. Port Orleans Riverside – I’ve stayed at this resort a few times in the past and was happy with the accommodations. The room was clean, and check-in was easy. We rented a car and parking was always adequate at the resort.
2. Magic Bands – This was my first trip with Magic Bands and I think they’re great! From the ease of opening your hotel room door, to entering the park and using the dining plan or charging to the room, we had no issues with the bands and found them much easier than opening our wallet to pull out a card.
3. FP+ - I was not an avid user of paper FP, so can’t really compare FP+ to that. I think in all of our trips, we may have used the paper FP once or twice. I’ll say that although I was not a fan of booking my attractions/times so far in advance, I did like the ease of being able to change the choices or times on MDE app while at the park. With the paper FP+ I remember having to get to the park early and rushing over with hopes that the FP hadn’t run out. With FP+, if I had a 4:00 FP, I didn’t have to show up to the park until 4:00 – in my eyes, that’s a score! (Not to mention a 5 minute wait for 7DMT vs 90 minute stand-by wait). We didn’t use the 4th FP+ - didn’t really have a need for it.
4. Crowd Levels – I found crowd levels at all four parks to be completely manageable. As expected, MK was a little more crowded than the others, but I was still pleasantly surprised. Attractions like HM and POTC had longer wait times than I’m used to (usually in the 25-35m range), but I had FP+ those in advance simply to skip the lines.
5. Weather – The weather was great! Although hot (which would be expected for June), it wasn’t too hot. Sunny every day. We had rain twice, which was the typical mid-day shower.
6. Fantasyland additions at MK – I thought the additions were aesthetically pleasing. The new Little Mermaid ride queue was nice. I was a little disappointed with the ride itself. 7DMT was excellent, but too short. I’m surprised that they didn’t use museum glass in the windows of the cottage – we couldn’t see inside because of a glare from the sun! The ride vehicles were also a bit tight – and I’m a 5’10 160lb guy. We didn’t make it over to BOG, but I thought the Beast’s castle was a nice touch as well.
7. Downtown Disney – Walls, walls, walls! We had dinner at Fulton’s one night and it was great. We were able to sit outside on the water. It was quiet (ressie was at 9:30) and the weather was comfortable. The rest of DTD was full of walls! We didn’t spend much time down there because of the construction.
8. Dining Plan – We’ve used the dining plan in the past and opted for the Deluxe Dining Plan again or this trip. I know people will probably shake their heads when they see that, but for us, it works. We tend to have table service dinners at Signature restaurants. Dinners were at Citricos, California Grill, Fulton’s, Le Cellier, San Angel Inn and Restaurant Marrakesh. Lunches were at Nine Dragons (x2), Flame Tree BBQ (x2), Hollywood Brown Derby, Coral Reef and Liberty Inn. The dining plan cost approximately $109.00 pp/pn, so we paid $1,308.00. I kept every dinner and snack receipt during the trip and when we came home, made a detailed spreadsheet to figure out what we actually spent. After removing the cost of tip and alcohol, we ended up with a grand total of $1,419 – which gave us approximately $111.00 more than we paid for. I would have even been happy breaking even – I just like having the comfort of knowing that I can order a $50.00 steak and not worry about the bill coming at the end of dinner.
9. Busses – Although we had a car, we did take the bus a few times at night so that we could drink and not worry about driving. I found the waits minimal, especially if you hang out in the park for a while after closing to avoid the rush.
10. Epcot After Hours Wind Down– We booked the “Wind Down” event at Spice Road Table for our second night. It was nice, but I probably won’t do it again. There were only two other tables of people at the event. We were served a flight of three different wines (none of which I cared for), three small tastings of appetizers and dessert. We were able to order drinks and anything from the appetizer tastings if we wanted more. It was nice to walk out of the park hours after closing with only a few people. Great opportunity for photos!

Before leaving for the trip, I read a thread about “pet peeves” in the parks and couldn’t believe some of the stories that were posted! I thought that I would have a hard time seeing the Disney magic with all of the rude people that I’d end up encountering. As with anywhere public, we did come across a few rude and downright nasty people – but as a whole, we had a pleasurable experience. The cast members were friendly and most of the guests were courteous/friendly. There are always a few that like to spoil the fun (or stop in the middle of a walkway to pull something out of the bottom of their stroller:scared:)

One request for parents: If your child doesn’t want to go on a ride or watch a show, please don’t force them!! I had a little boy SCREAMING his head off behind me on 7DMT the entire time because he wanted nothing to do with the ride – his dad made him get on it. It was not fun for him, and definitely not fun for me to have to listen to – takes away from the experience. Luckily, it’s a short ride! :thumbsup2

While on Carousel of Progress, the ride had to stop three *THREE* times because a mother would stand up with her son to walk him around the theater. Each time it stopped, a cast member came over the loud speaker to say NO standing. I thought the mother would get it after the first two times. :confused3

I’m sure there is a ton that I wanted to mention but am forgetting. If I think of anything else, I’ll be sure to post it. These were just a few of my thoughts/experiences from this trip. Overall it was positive and I’ll definitely be back soon!

This is all so great to know. We're going for our first ever trip in just over a week and some of the reports were getting me quite worried. Glad to know you had a great time. :goodvibes

Glad you had a nice week! I was there 6/3-6/8 and also was surprised at how manageable the crowds were. I too went in expecting a nightmare!

Great report! we were there May 24-31 and were also quite pleased at how manageable the crowds were!
Thanks for sharing!

Great review, thank you for sharing. We love the deluxe dining plan as well.... for us, it's nice to sit down and take a break and have a nice meal. We like to do the 2 credit meals also. It think it's awesome.

We're planning to go in June 2016 ( I know... it's TOO long away to start planning, but a girl's gotta have a dream) so I'm trying to decide 1st or 2nd week of June. Looks like it's a good choice.

Glad you had a great trip!!! :cheer2:

My best advice would be not to sweat the small stuff and don't let other people get you down! Hope you enjoy your first trip to WDW!

Great report. We were there 6/1-6/6 and also had a great experience. I was expecting living on the sun heat/humidity and was pleasantly surprised by the weather! TOTALLY agree about the walls at downtown Disney. I knew about the construction going into our meal there but the maze of walls was still overwhelming!

We were there from 6/3-6/8 and I pretty much concur with you. Crowds were very manageable, even at DHS on Friday 6/7, first day of SWW with Mark Hamill. People lined up for the parade 2 1/2 - 3 hours prior to start time, but other than that I was very easy getting around.

I was in a scooter for our time there and it was easy getting around. No real complaints at all.

We also loved the Magic Bands. Only place I had a problem with it was getting into our resort pool. For some reason I couldn't get my band to open the gate, but all the kids bands worked fine.

Weather was great for our first 2 days (Wed & Thurs), but by Fri the temps started to rise and the humidity starting going up. Even with that I can't find anything to complain about.

Interesting - we didn't try to enter the pool area, but I wonder if we would have had a problem too!

I agree with all of your statements. :thumbsup2

AK Kidani Village Savannah View, 6/1-6/3. Loved the crowd levels, especially since I was prepared for the worse based on posts. TP crowd levels hit the mark. I loved the MB & FP+. No problems with either. Obtained 4th & 5th FP+ a few days. I never fully utilized the old FP since we are not park commandos sending 1 all of over the park for them.

#6 is right on the mark. I will continue to go & enjoy myself, but SDMT was a let down for me just like VoTLM. I waited forever for both to open, remember all the walls around SDMT & thinking they'll get this one right. Not worth a 90 minute wait. However, I will ride them again.

#7. I hope it turns out to be fantastic when the walls are gone. Only took bus to DTD. Very pleased with DTD experience considering construction. Several changes to transportation coming this month due to construction.

#8. Deluxe Dining Plan for us too. We came out ahead as well.

I agree with you on the kids & strollers, & my DD6 does too. 2 rides ended early due to parents not following rules & rides ended for all. Not happy campers.

We had a fantastic time & cannot wait until our December trip. We just think & keep happy thoughts!!!

Fabulous. Thanks for a positive review. I agree that the MB and FP+ were great. We never used FP before and found the convenience of walking on wonderful. It does take some of the spontaneity out of the equation but that is a small price to pay. It took us 20 min. from beginning to end of Soarin' and the Standby wait was 90 min. SCORE.

Glad the magic is still there! I like the quick summation. Looks like you had a good time. :)

yes! That was my thought when standby for 7DMT was 90 min and it took us a total of 10 minutes from walking into the FP+ line to getting off the ride.

I agree with all of your statements. :thumbsup2

AK Kidani Village Savannah View, 6/1-6/3. Loved the crowd levels, especially since I was prepared for the worse based on posts.

I'm almost glad that the boards made me so nervous about crowd levels - It was a nice feeling of relief once I got there and noticed they weren't so bad!

Thanks for the report! I agree with all of it :)

We were at CSR 6/1-6/6 and found crowds to be great. HOnestly, we go this week every other year and this year crowds were the best and I really think it's due to a good majority of schools not being out just yet due to snow days.

It was our first time on VofLM too, and I agree...the queue was more "magical" than the ride! The large room where you can see the backside of all the animatronics and the ride vehicles on the other side really detracted. Why they didn't make it an entirely dark ride like Nemo is beyond me :confused3

I have three children that can now do everything (6, 10 and 12) , but when they were younger I went with the knowledge that I'd be sitting some things out. One example this week for me was particularly frustrating. We went to the Animation Studios in HS to draw (something we avoided when kids were younger). It was a full session and they allowed a large group to sit "down front" that included a child who couldn't have been more than 15 months old. The mother let him run around and talk throughout the entire session, making it hard to hear the Imagineer. I really almost leaned over and told the mother that she really should consider taking him out! I'm always understanding, heck, my 6 year old can still act up occasionally, but use some common sense people!

We went Memorial day week and I was expecting it to be crowded because of all the post from the year before said it was. It was great, I'm so glad we went. We only had one crowded hot day at MK and it was a a bit crowded at AK but we got everything done we wanted and had a good time. Epcot on Memorial day with EMH was actually a fun time and HS had very little crowds and it was awesome.

I'm one of the people who probably had you worried about your trip, even though that's silly because a million negative reviews on here wouldn't change my opinion of WDW one bit. But I have to say there is a line that stands out to me from your otherwise sparkling review...

"Attractions like HM and POTC had longer wait times than I’m used to (usually in the 25-35m range), but I had FP+ those in advance simply to skip the lines. "

This is exactly the type of thing that has some people worried and you have only confirmed suspicions. I leave in 10 days and have booked FP+ for HM and PotC for this specific reason. Sure, it was easy to pick A&E and the 7DMT for the FP+. But when it came to picking others for my 2 days at MK, while in the past I would have said "Eh, who needs a FP for PotC or HM...there's almost never any wait for them" I now read many reviews...even glowing ones like yours...that explain how PotC and HM have SB wait times half an hour or more. Is that "negative" of me to say? or is it just plain helpful?
