First Timer! Universal Rides with their WDW Equivalents!

If you are open-to-close park people, then Universal may not be for you. If you enjoy spending afternoon time at the resort pool, and evening time shopping and dining, then there is probably still enough at Universal for you to enjoy. One thing that is either good or bad depending upon how you look at it, is that some of the rides are the exact same except with different overlay. Spiderman and Transformers are the same. Kong and Fast & Furious are the same. Jimmy Fallon and Minions are the same. If you like or don't like one, then you already know how you feel about the other.

I am the type of person who will ride anything. But Simpsons is the most intense ride at Universal and nobody can convince me otherwise. I would avoid that for sure in her situation. I'd also avoid Forbidden Journey as well.

I am a big park open to close person - but I wanted an easier trip which is one of the many reasons we opted for Universal this year. We are looking to enjoy our time at CityWalk and at the resort!

Kong and Fast & Furious are the same. Jimmy Fallon and Minions are the same.

I would disagree because Kong has some animatronics, while I think Fast & Furious is all screens. Even though Kong has screens, I found it more immersive. With Fast & Furious, the screens seemed more obvious, if that makes sense. I think Kong suceeds as an enjoyable ride, but Fast & Furious doesn't.

I totally agree with you about Jimmy Fallon and Minions.

I was saying that more from an intensity level point of view. Kong is a far superior ride than F&F, but the same in terms of intensity.

Unfortunately I am a big F&F fan. If nothing else I'm going to take pictures of the queue for my cousin who is also a big fan and I never get to see much of these days. I personally think I'd love the simulators and I'm looking forward to the trip!
If you're a fan of F&F, then definitely do it. I think your wife will be fine as far as non-action, non-intense & non spinning ride goes.

For FJ, I found the projection screen to be the thing that made me sick. Now I just close my eyes during the parts where there's a lot of visual motion/(Harry on the broom stick). I can feel it coming on, so I quickly close my eyes, otherwise I get too sick to go on anything else the rest of the day. Your wife sounds like a trooper, but it's a bad feeling once the motion sickness kicks in. Try not to get to the point of no return.

I wouldn't write off Hagrids. If your wife enjoyed test track, it might be ok. I find it much better than FJ. Hagrids has speed and no tight loops or upside down. Does not get me sick at all. Just do the "challenge/intense" rides at the end, so if it doesn't turn out well, you're done with the park anyways.

Good luck and have fun!

My husband felt sick after forbidden journey. I thought it was fun, though. We both enjoyed simpsons. It was in our top 3. Hagrids was number 1 for both.

I'll see if I can do a quick grouping for reference. I'm mostly commenting from a ride system/intensity standpoint.

Harry Potter Escape from Gringotts & Mummy:
These two use exactly the same ride system/vehicle and have many similarities. Mummy is a bit more scary in the scenes and the roller coaster parts are more intense but it is still worth trying. (It is NOT like Space Mountain for me. I very much dislike SM and LOVE Mummy - which I think is a smoother and less jerky experience). Gringotts is definitely milder on the roller coaster part and I'd say is a must do. There are no solid WDW equivalents of these two, in my opinion.

Transformers & Spider-Man:
As above, these two are exactly the same system as each other. I'd say they are similar intensity, though Transformers might be slightly more intense. They are a unique combination of a moving vehicle and simulator screens +3d glasses. I'd say the closest thing I've done at Disney is probably Star Tours, though it isn't really the same. I think both of these are great but I'd try Spiderman first and then try Transformer's if you liked it.

Fast & Furious & Kong:
Same thing - identical vehicles - are we seeing a trend here? :-) Picture the bus from Kilimanjaro Safaris but with screens all around as you are moving. Cross that with the vehicle from Dinosaur and you're close to these rides. It is more simulator than physical movement, generally, but there is a lot of both. I think Kong is fun and interesting and F&F is way bad - even with bad acting - but the physical ride experiences are similar. And, we still ride F&F each trip as long as the waits are short.

Harry Potter Forbidden Journey:
This ride is TRULY unlike any other. The ride system is totally in a class of its own. I generally don't have issues with motion sickness, but I take something every day I am at Universal so I can ride this without concerns. It has VERY active motion for a non-roller coaster and has a super cool mix of screens and dark ride elements. It can be a bit intense but if you are at all a Harry Potter fan it really is a must to try it. It is very magical and truly unique.

Men In Black:
Not that different from a buzz lightyear-style ride (or maybe Toy Story Mania) but has some relatively strong spinning. Not like teacups spinning, but not wimpy either. Very fun shooting-style ride, though.

Simpsons & Despicable Me & Jimmy Fallon:
These are NOT identical but have a lot in common. They are truly simulators - you watch a screen while your vehicle (or the whole theater in the case of Jimmy Fallon) moves with the action. Jimmy Fallon is a LOT like Star Tours in that way, in my opinion....though less intense. Simpsons is the most intense of this group. It has never bothered me from a motion sickness standpoint, but I hear others talk about it bothering them.

Dudley Do-Right Falls:
A classic log flume ride - think Splash Mountain. Only with lousy relative theming, a LOT more wet, and a more intense hill at the end.

Overall, I'm a big fan of the "try it once and see" philosophy. I say try everything up to your comfort level :-)

Opinion-wise, I'd say that most or all of the rides at Universal are AMAZING. They skillfully combine simulator and real elements and use the technology to its fullest. Especially Forbidden Journey, Mummy, and Gringotts - there really is no fair comparison - I hope you get to try and love them all!

Unfortunately I am a big F&F fan. If nothing else I'm going to take pictures of the queue for my cousin who is also a big fan and I never get to see much of these days. I personally think I'd love the simulators and I'm looking forward to the trip!
The queue for F&F is awesome - and I'm not really a fan. The ride is OK...but just walking through the queue makes it worth riding, imho.

Harry Potter Forbidden Journey: Aweseome
Harry Potter Escape from Gringotts: Awesome
Fast & Furious: Skip. Worst ride ever.
Men In Black: Practical set Toy Story Mania
Simpsons: Ok. they upgraded screen to 4K
Transformers: Rocky ride
Spider-Man: Pretty Good
Jimmy Fallon: Awesome
Dudley Do-Right Falls: You will get completely soaked.
Kong: Boring
Despicable Me: Kids might like

No comparison to Splash Moutain.
On Dudlye Doo Right your pants and shirt and shoes will get completely soaked for the rest of the day. Recommend only riding it in swimming pants and flip flops.

I’m going for my first trip too! We’ve skipped UO both times we’ve been to WDW together (and on my solo trips) because it seems more screen-heavy/intense.
My partner gets carsick but has only had rides bother him maybe once? I think I’ll pack Bonine just in case. We’ll do FJ and Simpsons near the end of the day in case they’re too much for him (or me!)
I don’t really get motion sick but I like to know what’s coming - it helps me enjoy rides more. My first time on FOP was scary but once I got to learn the motion (and look at the leader to anticipate drops), I loved it.
Personally, bring on the spoilers - I’m watching POV videos galore!
Someone said that Despicable Me was like Tough to Be a Bug - do things crawl on you? That’s one attraction I know to skip at WDW so I’d love clarification on that one.

DM is like the Bug ride, but no nothing like something crawling. More, the seats move with what motion is generally happening on screen, and you are in a row of seats that each large section of seats moves. What does have more like Bugs is the 4D Shrek ride.

Hi all! My wife and I decided to plunge into Universal in August/September! We usually do WDW so this is our first official Universal trip where we are staying at the Hard Rock Hotel. My wife hated some rides at WDW and I am somewhat aware that Universal is more intense. What I'd like to do here is provide a list and see how users stack the listed rides to a WDW equivalent. This will help me understand what my wife will probably want to avoid and what she can (hopefully) handle.

To be clear - we are steering clear of coasters or super intense rides I'm already aware of (Looking at you Hulk and Jurassic Park drop), so they aren't on this list (and if they are please give me a warning!). Also not on this list is something I'm aware is a really kiddy ride like Dr. Suess. If I'm missing a key ride on this list that's not necessarily a very intense ride feel free to let me know and give a comparison. I have spoiled most of the rides for myself to try and make this trip more enjoyable for her, but even by watching ride videos, it's hard to tell sometimes (and I honestly couldn't bring myself to ruin the Harry Potter rides)

To get an idea of her tolerances: My wife took Mission: Space Orange and Test Track just fine but hated 7 Dwarves and Space Mountain. She loved Toy Story Mania. She had no issues on Dinosaur or Soarin' She initially came off Flight of Passage disliking the feeling but also appreciated the ride. She said she'd try it again (I don't know how she handled Mission Space relatively fine but not Flight of Passage!). I think what really did her in was the 4D aspects like the wind making the ride more intense. She came off Mission Space slightly nauseous but she felt fine and enjoyed it after whereas she wasn't nauseous after FoP but was a bit shaken. It's also worth noting she's a big Harry Potter fan but we have already decided to skip Hagrid's ride.

So I appreciate anyone who adds a WDW ride equivalent to this list and feel free to give additional comments.

Harry Potter Forbidden Journey:
Harry Potter Escape from Gringotts
Fast & Furious:
Men In Black:
Simpsons:
Transformers:
Spider-Man:
Jimmy Fallon:
Dudley Do-Right Falls:
Kong:
Despicable Me:

Again, thanks so much for helping me plan this trip!

Simulator rides get me bad. Like Star Tours is just awful for me, but I have to ride it! I just keep my eyes closed a lot. For whatever reason, FoP doesn't bother me. I think it's the breeze/cool air makes it better than ST. I've never tried Mission Space orange. It's about the only WDW ride I've never been on.

Forbidden Journey is a must do for a HP fan, BUT, it makes me so sick, nauseous. I have to close my eyes a LOT on that ride. What I finally did on a previous trip was ride a few times over the course of the trip, and alternate when I'm closing my eyes. so I FINALLY got the see the second half of the ride! The queue is awesome/must do, there's so much to see, so it was fine to get in line a few times to re-ride. (not right after each other tho, that's too much,) I think it's one of the best rides in Orlando. FoP reminds me of it, but FoP doesn't make me nauseous like FJ. I can't ride stuff like that on an empty stomach, so I need to ride it after eating, not right after, but not on empty stomach.

Gringotts', the coaster parts are not long, kind of stop/start, with interaction, and as a HP fan, I think it's a must do too, but if she doesn't do any coasters, like even snow white, idk. If she decides not to ride it, at least go through the queue. It's awesome.

SpiderMan gets me some times, but it's one of my favorite rides at IoA, and the ride that made me think, wow Universal really knows how to do this stuff. Disney doesn't have a similar experience yet.

Mummy is more intense than Space, thunder, all of that. along lines of RnRc/Everest, but no loop. but such a fun experience. Great story telling coaster. I dont' think Disney has anything like it, maybe Everest comes closest. Love Mummy.

Simpsons...gets me the worst out of the simulator rides...but it's hilarious, and I pretty much just sit there with my eyes closed. Even Minions gets me though, as well as Transformers, and Jimmy Fallon, so I am going to have to plan on Dramamine or something for our trip.

Kong and Fast/Furious are ok, no issues. I don't know what to compare it to at WDW. MiB is one of my favorite rides, and I love riding over and over. The spin is pretty fast, and kinda surprising if you don't know it's coming, but it's so fun. Dudley do right is fun, but we get very wet. Like pants soaking wet, so just be ready for that.

So, so much to do in Diagon Alley/Hogsmeade, the stage shows, ice cream at Florians..and if y'all get the interactive wand, that will keep one busy for awhile, so if you're riding, but she's skipping/waiting, there's plenty to do.

Have fun!!! happy planning!

Thanks for all of the detail! I’m feeling nervous about my ability to ride much even with Dramamine....lol. I do FOP, but have to close my eyes for most of it. Even Dinosaur gets me with its jerkiness. Same for my son. The screen moving car combo probably won’t be good. DH and I haven’t been to Universal in 20 years (think jaws and Twister) and my kids have never been so it’s like a whole new experience. Maybe I will try to get a scopolamine patch 😬

Yep, I have motion sickness and I use those pills every day. Still do close my eyes on some parts of Castle ride and Simpsons. The others I am fine with, as medicated. But everyone is different. I’d use whatever you use for motion issues. And yeah, I do think more screens at Universal, but there just as many other that is not. We also like to enjoy the pools at the resorts, and relaxing. Which is why we go on vacation to Universal.

Thanks to everyone for the incoming replies I am still reading all of them! 3 weeks to go! I have a question for the Forbidden Journey queue, we have the Express passes because we're staying at Hard Rock, does that mean we won't get to experience the queue in the same way?

Flight of the Hippogriff is also an enjoyable ride. It's basically for the kiddos but is enjoyable and you get some nice views of Hogwarts. Not really worth getting in a long line as it's pretty short but to me it's like a less intense Slinky Dog, which is already pretty tame IMHO.

Yes, for pretty much every ride the Express Pass skips a significant portion of the queue. If you are really into the theme of any ride, it may be worth it to go through the regular line at least once.

The first couple of times I rode FJ I was somewhat queasy. I used to close my eyes during the screens because the sensation of flying/dropping was too much for me, and then you'd be back inside the castle and it would be warm without that outdoor simulated wind and the motion/swinging of the cars wasn't fun.
However, a few years ago, I went on with my brother and it was his first experience on it. He loved it so much, and I started taking cues from him. Instead of pushing far back into the seat and gripping the bar, I leaned my stomach forward against the bar and relaxed my arms on top with my hands loose. I made myself open my eyes during the "flying" sequences and smiled instead of screamed. I do lean back and hold on during the whole Whomping Willow part with being tilted back and all. I find the whole thing much easier now. With my eyes open, I finally "know" the whole ride, what's coming, when the outdoor screen parts occur, so I don't have issues at all now. It probably took riding it about 4-5 times to get to that point.
