"First rule of leadership, Princess...." ~Overdosing on Ice Cream

There are lots of places for posing on the Streets of America. We missed all the store fronts, I've seen cute pictures of people posing in front of those too.
For some reason I have never thought of doing that. I must write it down. :goodvibes

I just feel like we missed most of it.

 Now I'm scared though. You are a real life editor :worship: and I have very bad grammar and spelling skills!

Don't worry about it. I can't count the number of times I've posted something and then noticed a typo, which then leads to "Dang it! People are going to think I'm incompetent at my job!" :headache:

But I like leaving my job at my job. Need to turn off Editing Brain every so often. :thumbsup2

I do that, too! Then I think, "Great, here's the English teacher making a grammatical error for all the world to see!"

"Is something supposed to happen?" - Mary Poppins

As we stood in line for the Backlot Tour, the young male CM tried his best to liven up what was a very low key group of people in line. He attempted some general humor, but didn't get much response. He then turned his attention to Adam, who not surprisingly was not paying attention. The conversation went like this-

CM: "What grade are you in?"

-Daisy pokes Adam-

Adam: "Huh? What?"

CM: "What grade are you in?"

Adam: "Ummm"

CM: "Did you forget?"

Adam: "Fourth grade."

Adam then turned away and went back to looking at the movie paraphernalia.

IMG_6527.jpg

It was then time for us to move forward and as the CM opened the rope to let us through he tried again with Adam.

"So what grade are you in?"

"Huh? What?"

Poor CM probably not the best conversation of his day.

The first part of the tour was some sort of water effect stunt, however we were informed that because of the weather they couldn't perform the stunt. Apparently just the mere possibility of rain is enough to shut this part down?

IMG_6528.jpg

They did talk us through the stunt and showed us the big wave of water that apparently soaks a lucky audience volunteer on most days.

We were then ushered out through an outside walkway, and out to the tram loading area.

IMG_6529.jpg

Now the reason that the Backlot Tour was on our must do list, despite the multitude of poor reviews for it, was because we had really enjoyed the backlot tour at Universal Hollywood in 2006. I think this resulted in our expectations for DHS' tour to high.

After getting seated on the tram we were given a warning about the left side, where Adam and I were sitting, getting wet. The tram pulled out and the tour began. Our guide was rather difficult to understand through out our tour. She started off spending a great deal of time talking about the water tower with Mickey Ears on it. I think that was to distract us from the fact that we weren't moving very far away from where we started.

We drove through the costume repair building, which was interesting, but you couldn't see in very well at all, and there was no action taking place inside.

IMG_6535.jpg

IMG_6536.jpg

We saw the organ from POTC 2 in the prop warehouse.

IMG_6541.jpg

As we drove past the Lights! Motors! Actions! show area the drivers were warming up and practicing some of their stunts.

IMG_6544.jpg

We were still within sight of the building we loaded the tram from, but as we drove around the corner our tram driver took us through a gate into a restricted area and we got caught in the middle of a special effects sequence being filmed.

A massive amount of water splashed towards us, but none of us got wet, though it did drip off the roof of the tram some. After the scene was finished we drove around the back of the set and said just how unreal it was.

IMG_6558.jpg

Now at this point I thought the tour was just starting and that we were going to be heading out farther away from the buildings and see some film sets or something. However that was not what happened. After the fire and water stunt we were taken almost directly back to the loading area. We did see a few movie set items on the way back.

Stepping off the tram we were all a little stunned and looking at each other thinking "That was it?" We walked through the dump shop in silence. Really I can't believe that Disney has the gall to even present that as a backlot tour. In my notes next to the tour I wrote "super lame." It was pitiful in comparison to Universal and as Aunt Pat said "Why bother?"

I agree with the backlot tour, but I do it everytime. I think it's guilt. I do enjoy the costume warehouse and seeing random props but the overall feeling is lame.

The Backlot tour is a sad, sad, sad shell of its former glory.

Back in the day, when the Studios were actually working studios, the backlot did the whole boat scene, Catastrophe Canyon, the wardrobe department had people working in it, and then the tram took you back on a bunch of lots of movie/television sets. For some reason, the outside of the house for the Golden Girls sticks out in my mind.

It's the same with the animation part of DHS. Once upon a time, it was working animation studios and the tour included walking through and being able to see animators at work. Now, it's just some faux desks of non-existent animators.

Very sad! :(

Oh good I won't worry then! Ok I will a little, but I'll try not to. :rotfl2:

Well if you do I never notice. Of course grammar is not my thing.

I can think of other things to do with my time from now on.

I guess that's the difference, at Universal it's an actual working studio so there is more to see. Disney really should just do away with that tour all together.

I agree -- they could put the Indiana Jones ride that they have at California Adventures in that spot! :thumbsup2

Wow. That sounds really disappointing. We missed this on our last trip, and from the sounds of it, it shouldn't be much of a priority on the next trip.

Now if the Golden Girls house was still there, I'd be all over this... I'm a closet fan! :happytv:

Thats interesting that you say "why bother" with the backlot tour. When i saw it for the first time this year i really liked it. And when i saw the universal hollywood tour a few years ago everyone in my family thought it was lame and not real. Like the parting of the waters thing and the Jaws thing and the gorilla thing. My favorite part was the begining when they show all the movies universal has done with music on the tv screens. oh well, i am glad you enjoyed it.

Oh parts of the Universal tour are lame too, especially Jaws, but seeing the movie and tv sets was fantastic. We loved seeing construction workers napping on one of the benches on a porch on Wisteria Lane (Desperate Housewives) There was just so much more to the Universal tour.

Funny, I remember an unusual emphasis on the water tower too! And that was back in 2006. Guess it hasn't changed much. :rolleyes1

GG house sticks in my mind too!! It used to be great b/c they advertised it as "you never know who you're going to see while on the tour." Now as I think about it, I never did actually see anyone but still, the "possibility" existed. Now who would ever believe a celeb was hanging around there??

Don't even get me started on this! That used to be my very favorite part!

:lmao: Our guide talked about that tower for a long while, too, though I never speculated as to why it was such an "important" topic. Methinks you're on to something!

Yeah, I remember when touring the animation portion when I was 10, they had actual animation cells from Aladdin, which was coming out that summer, and then I think they had concept art or sketches or maybe it was also animation cells from Lion King as a "preview." Honestly, I wasn't that interested in it then, but I would be now. And it's gone. :(

I agree -- they could put the Indiana Jones ride that they have at California Adventures in that spot! :thumbsup2

Wonderful idea!

This used to be my favorite part! I think it really went downhill after they began developing Lights Motors Action, since it is somewhat in the way of where the Backlot tour used to go.

Unfortunately you missed one of the good parts due to bad weather. On our trip in 2008, my Fiance and I were picked to be the audience participants - it was pretty embarassing at the time, but funny to look back on!

:offtopic:

For some reason I have never thought of doing that. I must write it down. :goodvibes

I saw your ticker and noticed that you are getting married in 5 days! CONGRATULATIONS! :cool1: :yay: :dance3:

Now, on topic!

I read the Photo Ops update this morning while sipping my coffee, but did not have time to comment....all the pictures are great! I love the Mickey Head one too.

Now, at the end of my day, I'm sipping another cup of coffee (decaf!) and I am treated to another installment. :thumbsup2 Too bad the Backlot Tour is lame, DH and I didn't make it to it last year, but probably will this year. It would be really cool if they actually took the guests on a Backlot Tour of WDW-like you got a glimpse into the CMs prepping for their shifts, or prepping for the the parade, you got to see where new costumes for the characters are being made, etc. However, I guess that would ruin the magic for some small kids, but man, I would be interested!! :goodvibes

Thank you.

That would be interesting if you actually could see some of the backstage CM stuff, but it would ruin the magic a little.

You obviously picked a heck of alot better seat than we did!

I'm glad we weren't the only ones who had a hard time finding the entrance. I find it rather ironic that they can't do the water stunt show if it's raining!:rotfl2:

Im late for the party, but I just found ya! I just finished page....1! LOL:rotfl2: Im ready for the rest...your kids sure are lookers! you must be such a proud mama!;)
