We did our first 5K race on Saturday. Husband and I have been preparing for this for a while. Our 9 yr old son has been bored with the walking, running, etc., but we bring him along because we don't want to leave him at home.
Anyway, we did our first 5K race (we plan on doing more). Husband had a decent time of about 25 minutes (he ran the whole way). I improved my time and did 50:02 minutes (I can't run, so I walk it). Son started to run with husband, but appeared to give up before they hit the first mile marker and started walking. Well, he finished in about 30 minutes.
When they handed out the trophies and ribbons, son got a medal for completing the race (all the oldies and kids got them) and was very proud. Then he got a 2nd place trophy for boys 9-10. How about that for running it cold!
Now he is all hepped up about running, wants to do some more so he can get more trophies and medals. Even had to pick up some nylon running shorts at the sporting goods store. We'll do another race in mid-May where he should get something for completing if not winning. He's got long legs, very slim and a body built to run.
This kid is so shy, I was worried that he would just sit down on the curb if he couldn't keep up with his dad and wait to finish the race with me. But he hung out with the rest of the runners and did well.
We're signed up for the races in January at WDW. Husband is in the 1/2 marathon. Son and I are in the 5K.
