First Communion Gift Question

Ok...so with all the wedding threads lately, I'm sure I'll get some varying answers here, but I've never dealt with this before. Weddings? Yes. I know what to do First Communions? You got me.

Here's the deal: This weekend I'm heading to the town my Dad grew up in for work. I might be able to attend a First Communion party/celebration/what have you for his niece's son...I have no idea what relation that makes me exactly, but we're related I know it's traditional to give cash, but what is the appropriate amount? ...And I say might because depending on what time my work function goes to and what time the party/celebration is being held, they might overlap and it might be a moot point. In any case, I'd like to be prepared.

Can the good people of the DIS help me out?

Hmm, so this is your cousins son? Sounds like you don't know them all together that well so I would say $40

And I think its super sweet of you to be thinking ahead and trying to be there for your relative

What kind of party is it - restaurant or home? The reason I ask is you would hate to RSVP yes to a restaurant function, and then not be able to make it. For someone I don't know that well, I'd give $25, $50 for closer family and friends, $100 for someone very close.

I don't know them all that well. When I moved here they became a lot closer distance wise and we've all been making an effort to be closer as a family. It's terrible, but I don't even know how old her son is (I know his name, but that's about it.)

But I figure it's the baby steps that'll work!

I think it's at her home. It was just casually mentioned to me that it was happening and if I wasn't working, they'd be happy if I stopped by. Of course I'd let them know as soon as I nail down the schedule!
