Well, on Friday I had my first big test as Gavin's Wife and after a shakey start I think I passed!

Gavin had a dr's appointment on Friday at 13.00 as we have suspected for about two weeks that he has developed diabete's (there is alot of family history so it's not a suprise, just 20 years earlier than expected).

So i'm at work, a different branch covering a supervisor on holiday, when I called Gavin at 13.30 to check up on him only for Gavin to tell me that he has had several test's and he has to return to the dr's at 15.00 for them to be repeated and if they are still sky high (blood pressure, blood sugar level and keretones) he will have to be admitted to hospital right away.

This was a big shock and as I was 35 miles away with no transport of my own I panicked. I told Gavin I would call him in five minutes once I had arranged to leave work and I dragged the branch manager (who I had only met a few hours ago) in an office and broke down. I couldnt speak, after I wrote down what was going on I managed to compose myself and rang my own manager to let her know then rang Gavin back to say I was on my way. This is the bit where I let Gavin down. He was holding up pretty well but I managed to make him very worried because I was so upset.

Gavin did get admitted to hospital on Friday afternoon and spent the evening getting one test after another. They managed to bring his keretone level down but they suspect he has had diabetes for a while so had to have an x-ray and scan to see if there was any damage to his liver or kidneys.

He has been fairly comfortable in hospital since then, he is on insulin twice a day to keep him stable but he has an appointment with the diabetes specialist tomorrow who will decide on a permenant dosage for him and also let us know the results from the scan and x-ray.

I think i've redeemed myself after my initial panic. I have only left his side to sleep and hopefully have kept him occupied and happy(ish) but so long as the results from the scan and x-ray are positive then we think he has got of lightly and are prepared for a lifetime of drug dependancy. At least he is no longer scared of needles or blood!

ooh Jodie sending you and Gavin lots of :grouphug: :grouphug:
what a worrying time for you both.At least you know what it is and can now take the right advice etc on how to deal with it.
Thinking of you both.

:grouphug: Oh Jodie, what a worry to have, sending you and Gavin lots of pixie dust :wizard: :wizard: and I hope his results turn out OK

Thanks :goodvibes

We already had plans for camping in a tent for next years holiday but his insulin will have to be kept at a controlled temperature so that's out

Jodie

So sorry to hear your bad news. I do know that lots of people can manage with this and take vacations every year, but need to make sure that Gavin keeps organised to take his meals and medication at the correct time.

Poor Gavin, no wonder you fell to pieces! :grouphug: At least in he is in the best place now and you can get it all sorted out. Hope he makes a speedy recovery and the test results are positive. :wizard:

Jodie I'm sure you will both learn to manage Gavin's condition. FIL was diagnosed a diabetic last year. Apart from giving up all those sweets, chocolates and grapes he manages very well. He now takes a proper breakfast and regular exercise. Did not stop us having a great holiday on a canal boat this year :goodvibes

Jodie,

I know several people with diabetes and they live perfectly normal lives, granted with added medication and doctors appointments, but there are a lot worse things out there. At least its been found and they can get him right and keep an eye on him from now on.

My DH takes loads of medication every day for various conditions, and all it takes is a bit more advance planning.

Big :grouphug: to you both, and you get upset because you care,

Lynn

sorry you had such a shock jodie :grouphug: i hope gavin gets out of hospital soon and that he soon manages his condition :)

WOW baptism of fire of what - sounds like you kept it together rather well to me Mrs :)

Sending you and Gavin lots of hugs and good wishes. I hope the scan and X-Ray don't reveal anything and that with the medication he will be feeling a lot better soon.

I am sorry about the camping trip but hopefully you'll find some way round that.

Thinking of you both :grouphug:

Hope everthing works out for you both :grouphug:

Please don't worry too much. DD1 was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes 6 years ago when she was 21. She too had a sky high blood sugar level of 50 (normal is 4-7) and lots of ketones. She now manages her Diabetes very well, with Insulin 4 times a day.

This regime, which I am sure your huband will end up on soon, is very flexible. Eg occasionally she WILL have a bag of sweets when she goes to the cinema - she just adjusts her Insulin accordingly. This is quite acceptable occasionally - though not too often.

As long as your DH complies with the advice he has been/will be given he should avoid/reduce most of the complications and will be able to lead a perfectly normal life. I know DH and I are used to such things due to our jobs in Medicine but it was still a shock when DD was diagnosed, we are now quite used to it - and will get used to it too.

By the way, there are Frio pouches which you submerge in water and they keep Insulin cool for many hours.

You then have to dry it and it can be reused. Buying a few of these should mean you can still camp.

Hope Gavin is out of hospital soon. I am sure you will both deal with this just fine. :grouphug: for you both
