Well, on Friday I had my first big test as Gavin's Wife and after a shakey start I think I passed!
Gavin had a dr's appointment on Friday at 13.00 as we have suspected for about two weeks that he has developed diabete's (there is alot of family history so it's not a suprise, just 20 years earlier than expected).
So i'm at work, a different branch covering a supervisor on holiday, when I called Gavin at 13.30 to check up on him only for Gavin to tell me that he has had several test's and he has to return to the dr's at 15.00 for them to be repeated and if they are still sky high (blood pressure, blood sugar level and keretones) he will have to be admitted to hospital right away.
This was a big shock and as I was 35 miles away with no transport of my own I panicked. I told Gavin I would call him in five minutes once I had arranged to leave work and I dragged the branch manager (who I had only met a few hours ago) in an office and broke down. I couldnt speak, after I wrote down what was going on I managed to compose myself and rang my own manager to let her know then rang Gavin back to say I was on my way. This is the bit where I let Gavin down. He was holding up pretty well but I managed to make him very worried because I was so upset.
Gavin did get admitted to hospital on Friday afternoon and spent the evening getting one test after another. They managed to bring his keretone level down but they suspect he has had diabetes for a while so had to have an x-ray and scan to see if there was any damage to his liver or kidneys.
He has been fairly comfortable in hospital since then, he is on insulin twice a day to keep him stable but he has an appointment with the diabetes specialist tomorrow who will decide on a permenant dosage for him and also let us know the results from the scan and x-ray.
I think i've redeemed myself after my initial panic. I have only left his side to sleep and hopefully have kept him occupied and happy(ish) but so long as the results from the scan and x-ray are positive then we think he has got of lightly and are prepared for a lifetime of drug dependancy. At least he is no longer scared of needles or blood!
