Finger food ideas for a baby with no teeth?

beans-kidney, black cooked and partially mashed. refried beans-vegeterian. we just smeared these on DS's high chair and he would paint wiyh yhem and lick his fingers.

This is so helpful to me :) She actually has been eating mostly grains, fruits, & veggies, so I am feeling much better about her diet now. She seems to be a breakfast girl-french toast, pancakes, toast, waffles, eggs with fruit and veggies seems to be her main meals lately.

I had no idea about cheese being hard on her kidneys-wish my pediatrician had mentioned that to me at her 9 month appt. We have not gone crazy with cheese, but it would have been nice to know.

Canned beans are a great idea. I'm guessing chickpeas would be too hard for her, but kidney beans sound great!

I smash up drained, canned chickpeas and have them on toast, myself. So I bet that would work!

My oldest started eating table food at 6 months old. He didn't get his first tooth till almost 8 months. As long as stuff is cut small enough, it will be fine. Gums are pretty dang tough - they can mash food up good!!

I got ground turkey/chicken and boiled little meat balls. All you have to do it pinch a pea sizes off and drop it in boiling water.

I would avoid canned anything for a child that young. All canned food contains BPA (it leeches it from the can lining). Remember how they removed BPA from baby bottles a few years ago because it was bad for babies?

Soak dried beans instead. Cheaper and no BPA

All of my kids ate mostly finger foods at that she with no teeth. No babies have molars, but all of them have them right under the gums, so all babies that age can chew the same, regardless of the front teeth being there or not.

Babies (and small children) don't need much protein. It's hard on their kidneys. Cheese is especially hard on their kidneys, because of the protein plus the salt. I'd concentrate on the grains - pasta, cereal etc and veggies and fruits.

Actually these are prime growing years and protien is very important.

Some say a gram of protein per pound, some say 13 gr average.

While most doctors incourage meat as it's a complete protien, you can also do lentils, beans, milk/dairy etc. (pb and bread, cottage cheees and avacado, beans and rice are incomplete protiens but combined make whole protiens).

Ask your doctor if you want more precise amounts but I would not skimp on meats or protiens if your baby is not breastfeeding (huge protein source).

Just remember babies and toddlers don't need that much. It might look like they didn't eat anything but they really don't need it.

I think it is like a teaspoon of meat is enough but some parent insist their little ones eat like a whole portion an adult would eat. I see this when we are eating out where parents are forcing a child to eat more when they are full. And we wonder why we have obese kids some of it has to do I'm sure with forcing kids to eat more than they really need then they just get use to eating when they are not hungry or full.

Plus if they don't like something when they are one or two try it again when they are older our taste buds change as we get older.

I was wondering if grilled cheese sandwich would be soft enough to "gum" properly (in small pieces of course).[/QUOTE said:
I was going to suggest this. My first DS was a late teether and was off all baby food before a year old. I remember giving him small pieces of grilled cheese sandwiches, as well as small pieces of cheese pizza. The frozen carrot and peas combo was pretty handy, too, as already bite size and could be cooked mushy.

I thought of 2 other things dd loved that have some protein, mini cheese perogies and ravioli. I would cut them in quarters and she'd gobble them up.

This won't help you now but we used baby food for dips. Sometimes we had to add a little water to it but the boys loved this for a couple of years.

We tried fish sticks yesterday & they were a hit! Going to try a grilled cheese sandwich tonight :)
