Finding a Resort

mr goodwrench i would strongly recommend that since you want a smaller amount of points that you call DVC and tell tehm you are intersted in buying two or three smaller add on contracts to get your target goal of points and get them at 2 or 3 different resorts...........the maintaince fees are not too bad......and at SSR they will be low the first couple of yrs..........as OKW ages so will the fees........VB and HH too me are as risky maintenence point wise due to weather concerns causing property damage..............plus they are older resorts as well closer to the salt water breeze that is toxic to houses............just more to ponder.
I didn't know DVC would do this for a new buyer. I was under the impression that the minimum points for a new buyer was 150. I will call tomorrow and look into it. Thanks for the info.

You must have at least 150 points already to buy another contract of less that 150 points from DVC. DVC won't sell you less than 150 points if you don't already have points. But you could buy three smaller contracts to total 150 points.

not true..............my brother in law bought four small add ons from DVC to start his point collection..........that was back in 1992 and 1994. I think they will work with you. At first they are quite resistant but eventually they let him buy odd lots they had acquired.

Well, I called Disney today about this and they told me no. 150 pts was the minimum. I even told her I had seen where others had purchased small ad on contracts their first time buying. She assured me, that it did not happen. Oh well, back to the Timeshare store. But I do have some good news...I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by swithching to GEICO.

mrgoodwrench, be fore warned... Many a Members here originally *thought* 60, 70, 100 points would more than fulfill their needs. Many were proven wrong.

Once you get the taste of DVC, perhaps a whiff of the one or two bedroom, your doomed.

Just some friendly advice to ponder...

Whatever could you mean by that? 100 points is enough for me. I can swing two 5 night studio stays a year with that and it'll be just perfect for me. I remember saying that and less than a year later did the 130 point add on.

If you buy 100 points, that's a $7,000 investment. Don't buy at a place you don't want to stay in order to save $100 a year (or less) in fees. Especially when the maintenance fees at HH may surpass those at OKW some day.

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if you end up staying at HH more that WDW in the long run. It is REALLY nice there. And much closer to Va.

If you're so inclined in the least, I would buy resale and not from DVC. If you can already see the benefits of doing that, enough said. If not, enough said.

I haven't seen SSR. So I can't give you an opinion about that resort. But I own at OKW and it's great! If I were doing it again I would by OKW through the Timeshare store just like I did.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to purchase 150 pts right now, but I'm just not in a position to do that right now. I'm going to Disney in Dec. 05' and thought it would be cheaper in the long run to invest in a DVC with 60- 70 pts. , then borrow to meet my needs of a 2 bedroom at OKW for 5 nights, than throw away $1,100 renting points from someone. At least I'll still have something to show for it. Whew, I'm getting dizzy talking about all this stuff.

If you are considering buying resale you will need to get moving right away. The first couple weeks of December usually fill up at the 11 month mark. DVC members love going at that time. The points are the lowest and the Christmas decorations are out. We go the first week of December quite a bit. The process of buying resale can take a couple of months even after you find the contract that you want to purchase. If you are buying through DVC direct you will have to buy the minimum number of points, 150. Buying through DVC doesn't take too long, usually just a couple of weeks. But if you do buy 150 points you will be able to stay a full week every other year in a 2-bedroom.

Mr. Goodwrench,

You would definitely need to book OKW for the first week of Dec at the 11mo window. Although OKW & SSR are the largest DVC resorts, even they can fill up fast. I was on the waitlist starting in Aug of this year for the first week of Dec and didn't get it! Its such a popular time for DVCers that its wise to book a Dec vacation as early as you possibly can.

Good luck!

Well, I guess buying into DVC will take a little longer than the 11 month window, so I guess I'll have to go ahead and rent some points for OKW. If anyone has 110 pts for OKW Dec.4-8 of 2005/ 5 nights, just pm me with the info. I did talk to a fellow in the timeshare store today, and I asked about getting this date if i bought into another resort other than OKW. He said this date was "no problem", and that it was a slow time of year. I hope it wasn't just a selling tactic.

Happy Holidays !!!
