Find Your Own "Directive" - the February Weight Loss / Life Style Change Challenge

Phew. Whirlwind start to a whirlwind week. Its annual business reviews this week so I was at the Marriott hotel from 10a-5p. There were mini brats and pretzel bites with cheese as a snack option and I resisted! I'm also happy to say that I resisted dessert at lunch time. And have managed to stay on track today. Day one, down! I won't really have much time to chat this week. Sorry all!

I got my 6.2 mile run in at about 1 hour and 37 minutes (give or take a few seconds). A 15:44 pace puts me into the sweet spot to reach the coveted 3:30 time frame, or a 16 minute mile pace.

Five weeks of personal training and I already see the amazing effects from it. Didn't refuel with water nor gu for this run... plus I had to wait at stop lights and go through dark areas where it was hard to see the ground.

Feeling great about New Orleans this weekend. :cheer2:

You've been training well; you go, girl! New Orleans is one of my favorite, fun destinations. Enjoy!

Just going to share a bit, and maybe throw myself a pity party here! I've been participating in these challenges since September and they have really helped me stay on track - so, thank you, fellow WISHers! I never have tried losing weight consistently in the months of November thru March/April; in the Spring/ Summer, I diet, lose a bit, then by Fall, I'm back to old habits. By winter, I have the blues - just want to hibernate! This year, it's been different - I've lost weight slowly throughout fall and winter. I'm so happy and was looking forward to an annual business meeting my husband and I attend every March ( for the last 4 years). The meeting is a long weekend in the Carribean that mixes business with leisure - boat trip, snorkeling, etc. This year, I'm 20 pounds lighter than our last trip/mtg and was looking forward to fitting into some cute sundresses I haven't fit into for awhile.

My poor husband slipped on ice last Tuesday morning, breaking his right leg ( 2 bones fractured) and severely spraining his ankle. He'll have surgery this week and faces a 3-4 month recovery. Of course, we won't be able to travel in 2 weeks, so that's a bummer! I'm grateful that I work the night shift so that I'm available to drive him to appts, work, etc. I'm also thankful for his overall good health that should make his recovery smooth. I'm just feeling a little sorry for us, missing a trip we looked so forward to.

Ok, pity party over! Thanks again, WISHers, for being on this journey of health and fitness!

Turned out to be an awful day today. I'm having a nice healthy dinner and then off to bed to sleep the awful off.

Oh no. I hope today you wake up to a bright, happy, POSITIVE day!

WOW! You are doing great!! I love to hear that people can SEE and FEEL the amazingness that is a strong body!

OH NO, NO, NO! I'm so sorry!! How disappointing that you will be missing the trip and how devastating that you husband is injured! Glad you are able to be there to help him though. And remember..... at 20 pounds HEALTHIER you are in a MUCH better position to help him through his recovery!

When my DH had his bad accident in 2010 it would have been SO EASY to slip into old habits of "pity eating" and "stress eating" and "boredom eating".... but I had to keep reminding myself that this was the time to STAY THE COURSE because I had NO IDEA what my husband's recovery would be like, but I KNEW he (and the kids) would need me DESPERATELY.... and at a healthier place in my life I would be MUCH better able to help them! And eating my feeling was NOT going to get DH out of the ICU any sooner, right??

Plus, if this trip is an annual thing, think about how FABULOUS you will look at this time NEXT YEAR! You will blow those other wives away!!................P

Question of the Day -- February 22

Let's talk... Guessing Games & Food Portions
Serving sizes and food portions can be a pain. Ever try going to the movies and realizing that a portion of
M&M's is equivalent to a "fun size" bag? (And let's be real - that's not fun! You want to eat more of those M&Ms!)
Losing weight and maintaining it is a guessing game. How you choose to participate is key to your success.

How do you manage portion control? Are there any tips or tricks to share?
How have your eating habits improved as a result?
What challenges are you having with portion control and resisting eating more than you should?

I was SO glad to read that so many of you use a food scale for portions. I do that as well and I try hard to encourage my WW members to use a scale, over measuring cups, if possible. I think it gives a MUCH more accurate representation. Plus no cups to wash! I just put my plate or bowl on the scale, hit the TARE button and portion out my food.... whether it is roasted sweet potato chunks, yogurt, pasta, shredded cheese.... and I tend to measure in grams to be a bit more anal about it ;)

I got into the habit as I took this journey to measure/weigh everything that I can and I try to STILL do it as much as possible. My food scale sits in a drawer in the kitchen where it is super easy to pull out and use. I keep a little ceramic bowl with it, in case I am measuring something to add to a recipe or such (like shredded cheese or PB2). I also keep LOTS of Tablespoon measures in the drawer (I bought a few extra sets and kept only the Tb and the tsp) because I find I am forever measuring a TB of salad dressing or something like that.

I tell my members that if you cannot feel like you can weigh/measure EVERYTHING, at least measure out the more calorie dense items like cheese, oil, salad dressings, peanut butter, nuts, chips.

The ONLY time I have a real challenge with portions is with stuff I should not have around anyhow.... like this weekend's splurge on M&Ms. And what I would normally do is either buy a small bag and share with someone, or portion out my share into a baggie and keep that with me. Unfortunately I didn't plan on M&Ms.... the men stopped and bought them (my favorite flavor too... peanut butter!) and they bought a HUGE bag... so I was forced to kind of count as I went along. I THINK I stopped at 20.... but I was distracted by the movie. Nuts are trouble for me..... but as long as I do not START eating them, I can resist. DH keeps them around always because he eats low carb most of the time..... mmmmm, cashews!

I tend to not keep other indulgences at home..... like my WW members say "Say NO once at the grocery store and you don't have to say no DAILY in the kitchen!" I don't buy chips or other tempting crunchies.... if I want something salty I make fat-free popcorn in the microwave..... I don't buy cookies or granola bars.... if I want a sweet I have peanut butter (or PB2) and banana or a WW bar or a Yasso frozen yogurt bar. I don't usually even keep BAKING supplies in the house because for some of us (thinking of DH here... I hate baking) it becomes too tempting to make up a batch of cookies (or cookie dough ;) ) or just each the chocolate chips!

And I'm sorry if this is harsh, but the excuse of "I need to have it around for the kids" doesn't fly with me! They shouldn't be eating it either! Don't tell me how your son is a "beanpole" and doesn't have to worry about calories. Okay, I get that.... but he shouldn't need to eat Oreos either! My son has grown just fine without Oreos, Chips Ahoy, or Captain Crunch on a regular basis! It is JUNK, plain and simple.

The weekend in St Louis was a success.

I ended up not going out Friday night with some of our coaches because I knew I would be tempted to eat crap and drink. For the first time, probably ever, I thought to myself that I would get more enjoyment out of seeing the scale go down than going out and eating wings and drinking beer. I ended up getting a salad through room service and going down to listen to the Friday night speaker (something I've never done before because we always went out on Friday nights).

Saturday was some more firsts - I went down to the gym early and did the treadmill for 5,000 steps. Never would have done that before. The weather was so great (74*) that during the afternoon I went and walked around Busch Stadium and got another 5,000 steps in. That evening I met up with my wife and we hit Ruth's Chris Steakhouse with another couple. Ended up splitting stuffed mushrooms, got a caesar salad (a 500 calorie caesar salad!), and a filet. I also had a couple of Ultra's with my meal and my day totals were just over 2,000 calories. That's more than I usually have and I was a little nervous, but my weigh in Sunday morning resulted in a 3/4 lb loss! I'm now down 26 1/2 pounds since Jan 1.

WOW! Those sound like some SOLID lifestyle changes! I am so proud of you!! And I'll bet you are proud of you too! And I can IMAGINE that the feeling you got on the scale Sunday morning was waaaaayyy better than the feeling you would have gotten from the beer and wings on Friday!

The only way I really manage it is by not eating it. Now, I'm fine with some foods and snacks - kind of like my B list. Sure they are good, but they are not my absolute favorites. We have Oreos in the house all the time for my kids, and I'm never really tempted to grab one. I like them, but I'm able to control myself on those.

When it comes to my A list, like cookie dough, peanut butter cups, or doughnuts, I just can't do it. I can't control myself on those things. If I eat one, I'm going to eat 30. Those are the things I really struggle with. A few nights ago we went to Chili's for dinner after getting our taxes done. We normally don't order deserts, but the skillet chocolate chip cookie looked incredible, I wanted to get one to share... but I knew I wouldn’t be able to control myself, so we ended up not getting it and just grabbing the kids some McDonalds ice cream on the way home. I guess I just know that with some things, I can't resist eating more than I should.

(Expand to see all of my comments) So much of this lifestyle change is learning what you CAN and CANNOT control! We get that skillet cookie sundae (at Uno's) once a year for DS's birthday... and every year I tell myself I will have one bite and EVERY YEAR I eat my share and then some. So now I just need to remember to plan it into my day! DD and I love the McD cone for a sweet treat once in a while!!

I'm just mastering portion control... last week I discovered the bar code scanning function in the WW ap (a life changer), and this week I am going to be getting a food scale. I am by nature a grazer, so something like a cut up apple is ideal for me because I can keep munching away at it. Fortunately I'm not chip driven because that's something I would keep mindlessly shoving in my face, even though I don't love them.

I am a sugar addict, it's my drug of choice, so the best strategy is to stay away because one little bite is never just one little bite. A bag of cookies or box of chocolates could be consumed in one sitting... a quart of ice cream gone in an evening. For my upcoming WDW trip I will plan to have an ice cream martini in France, my one extravagance and with two full scoops it will be more than enough to satisfy, but the thing that worries me is the hot fudge sundae at the POP ice cream counter... it's been my downfall more than once.

Isn't that barcode scanner the BEST!!?? Wish it were available in a hand-held device for my members who don't have smart phones!

********************

Hey friends! Here this morning, but staying busy here during school vacation week. Today is the FINAL DAY of build season for robotics, so I'm sure my men will be out of here before lunch and not home until after midnight. I may end up having to be at the lab with them after my WW meeting tonight, so I'm trying to plan my day accordingly. That will mean packing a healthy but filling carry-along dinner to bring with me so that I can go directly to the lab (and the only stop between my WW meeting and the lab is a Dunkin Donuts and a pizza shop). I don't have much in the way of salad stuff here, so I think I'll pack up a yogurt with berries... it was going to be an overnight oats cup, but I'm having oatmeal for breakfast.

Off to finish watching last night's Biggest Loser while I have breakfast... I fell asleep before the end so I don't know who won and I'm afraid to go on Facebook for fear of seeing a spoiler!.............P

Question of the Day - February 23

Let's talk... Recharging Our Batteries

Exercising can take a lot out of our bodies since we're working hard to shed those pounds.
We're burning a lot of calories and building strength in our muscles. Like Wall-e, we need to "recharge our batteries"
at the end of a workout to make sure we're replacing what was used - but in moderation.

What do you eat/drink after a workout to refuel your body?
Do you eat/drink anything before or during a workout to give your body fuel?
Any post-workout rituals you do to relax muscles or refuel?

I am very curious to see what people say about this since I find this part one of the hardest. Balancing working out & fuel without having too much that you don't lose weight. When I did cross fit I use to have a protein shake after. Right now I am just walking and hoping to start to run/walk soon. Just trying to get a few pound off before I start so my knees don't take as much of a beating.

QOD 2/23: My weight is currently so heavy that the only form of exercise I'm doing is walking. My daily goal is to be between 10,000 and 15,000, and I usually have a couple FitBit challenges going with friends to make it more fun. To reach my daily goals I have to do things like walk in circles at the bus stop, do morning loops around the office, get out for a good long walk at lunch and get off the bus about 10 blocks earlier than my normal stop... if worst comes to worst it's walking in place at home in the evening until the FitBit does it's happy dance. Since my walking is broken up in to different "sessions", I don't have to do anything special before or after.

That being said.... during my May trip to WDW I'm going to do the 4-parks-in-1-day (without a nap) challenge, and if the weather isn't too hot and humid I'm also going to be trying to set a new personal high in steps-per-day and get the next badge which will be 35,000 steps. For this I am going to be in "training" and will get in some long walks/hikes between now and then. I'm also thinking about how I'm going to feed my body... I think I need to do a lot of protein the day before and more carbs during? I'm thinking I'll probably consume more than my daily points that day, but I'll have so many fit points I'm not worried about it. I am planning of getting a massage the day before, to work out any kinks and wear and tear... oh, and that ice cream martini is going to happen the day after in celebration.

Go to a shopping mall on a Saturday when it's super crowded and just walk laps around the mall. The more people the better so you can get used to walking at a brisk pace and dodging around people. It may sound silly but think about what it's like at a theme park. Even better, if allowed, try to go to an outdoor mall / center so you can get used to being around people AND the heat! :)

I actually got a food scale to keep myself in check even with padta servings. Turns out protiens are waaaaay more than I though and anything with a starch is way less. I've gotten into such a good habit with it that it's getting pretty easy to eyeball correct serving sizes.

My issue is when I don't care and eat it all anyway lol.

@Oneanne tell me about Pop! I'm having my first stay in april! I'm excited about this resort. Any suggestions on what decade to stay in or high floor? I put in a request for a water view and high floor.

fLvy --- Yes, I like to request upper floor/lake view rooms, which have been at the end of the 50's and 60's buildings. I'm always taking a red eye from the west coast and have had good luck getting one of those rooms when I'm on the non-stop that gets in really early (I think it's because I'm pathetically draped over the check-in counter barely awake and they feel sorry for me) but haven't been so lucky when on connecting flight that get me in mid-day.

The bus service at POP is super... actual queues to line up in and dedicated buses, no sharing with other resorts. Plus the location is so central it is quick to get to and from the parks. It's easy to walk over to AoA, as they have different options in their food court. I'm usually at WDW solo, so I like coming and going thru the main/central building (the only problem being the ice cream counter) and like resorts that aren't too big.

I love POP. We have stayed there maybe 4 times or more. The buses are great. The only thing that would make the buses better is if there was a little bit more shade. We love the 50's area. We have stayed there twice. The pool there is so quiet and not rowdy. We enjoy the food court especially for breakfast. It is easy to grab and go. Make sure that you try to see the twist in the morning in the food court at 8 and the hustle in the lobby at 6. The cast members look like they are having so much fun. We had a pool view of the bowling pin pool on our last trip and one of the lake on the one before. We had put in a request to be near our friends on our last trip. They were coming down later than us. We got a text from them that they were going to be in the very next room. I was surprised that things worked out so well.

The most I will do for a post workout is usually breakfast since I try to work out early. An afternoon walk will just be fueled by water.

I've been mall walking the past few weekends because of the crappy weather, hadn't even thought about the benefit of dodging other people :thanks:

Hey everyone. sorry i've been MIA. work has been crazy and my motivation is plummeting. i'm still at a 3lb loss, but i feel like im failing! just one of those rough downswings i guess. aside from my own willpower, i have nothing keeping me accountable to get my runs in and keep working out. UGH feeling really depressed lately.

sorry to be such a downer, Im just struggling through it right now :/

Completely a quiet day today. It was a very weird day for me but good. I'm back to feeling accomplished and awesome! Sometimes you just have to sleep the suck off.

Before workouts, I drink Celsius, a 10 calorie energy drink that helps me get my butt in gear at the gym after the night shift.

Man, I hate that feeling! This thread definitely keeps me accountable - there's also a thread dedicated just to exercise accountability. You lost that 3 pounds; keep going, girl! You got this!

Glad to hear that! Love " sometimes you just have to sleep the suck off"! Ain't that the truth!

Wow! I killed the thread! Where is everyone today? I posted at 7:30 am and no one has been here since??

Anyhow.... hope you all are having a TERRIFIC TUESDAY!.......................P

Ha too funny - it was a busy day for me then the boys had hockey training so we didn't get home till 7pm then had to heat up dinner and cook rice to go with it. By the time I did all that I had no energy to check in on everyone.

I have had a good week being active - Monday did the paddling/beach workout, Tuesday while the boys did training DD and I walked around the grass fields adjacent, then this morning I did a riverside workout with the girls no boards though we walked a big loop around the park when we would usually have paddled. Its hard to get up early but it is getting easier and I am enjoying it actually and the time of day is beautiful.

QOTD: I don't have a routine for fueling before or after yet - make sure I have water for during and after that's about it so far.

So, I am back from a fun long weekend trip. It did not go well. Lovely breakfast buffet, drinks in the evening... I can feel that I am bursting out of my clothes. I think over the last two months I regained all the pounds I lost from September to December. Arg!! Why do I do that!! I guess I can blame hormones to a certain degree, but certainly not all. And currently my motivation is going down and down further every day. At least I used the treadmill at the hotel on Sunday as planned. But missed my run this morning because I just could not get out of bed after a horrible night. For some reason I just could not fall asleep for nearly an hour when I went to bed yesterday.

At least I am back on track with cheching in here!! And I have decided to make today a totally treat-free day. I think I have been overindulging with little pieces of chocolate and two or three gummy bears here and there far too much over the recent weeks.

Hey guys.
I've been a bit MIA for the past few days and I actually sat down today to do a long response ... but I'm a little too exhausted. I was up from 3:15 to 5 this morning, and I thought I'd be okay without coffee ... maybe not.

Anyway ... sending good thoughts and prayers to those suffering and/or injured.

It's been a long, frustrating week for me (is it really only Wednesday), but the good news is that I did pretty okay with my eating yesterday (I did have a few Oreos, but I tracked them and it didn't cause too much damage), and assuming I can stay away from the nuts (I already had an unplanned handful this morning), today should be another decent day. Although the rain might throw me off. We'll see.
The good news is that I had a good run this morning - after two weeks of really crappy runs, I felt pretty good throughout my run today and didn't need any extra walk breaks. Score!

So that's me. I'll try to check in later and actually see if I can do some responses, but I make no promises.
