Final Warning Re: Entry Image Size....

Ok, guys I have been trying to be more than accomodating regarding all things photo contest. I have changed rules to better suit the masses, compromised on many things I was dead set about, and have tried to be more than fair when it came to all of the rules. In the past I have given people chances to replace their photos if the entries broke the rules, I have allowed the occasional late entries, and I have allowed entries whose size was larger than the rules state. Why I have had to continue doing this I am not sure.

I WILL NOT DO THIS ANY LONGER!!

If the photos are too big, you will get NO warning, they will not be added to the contest. I will not PM you to tell you why, you will just find that they are missing when it comes to the polls. If the photos are entered after 10pm EST they will no longer be accepted. The late entries I don't mean to be so harsh about as I have always allowed them because, heck I run late more than anyone I know, but I have to start enforcing all of the rules otherwise people think they can keep breaking them. I will do my best to hop in at 10pm EST every Sunday and mark that the entry time is closed, because I know that the DIS clock is confusing for some.

I promise I am not saying this to be mean, and I don't mean to come across harsh. I am just trying my best to make the contests easy and fun for everyone. Please take the time to check your entries and make sure they are not too large!!

When you go to link a photo, it gives you 5 size options: tiny, thumbnail, small, medium or large. Does anyone know which size will get me as close to (but not over) the 800x600 rule? And is it relative based on the original file size? Meaning I might be able to post a Large from my old 3mp camera but only a medium from my 8mp camera.

Pick large - that will get you within the rules.

yes, I think that the large size makes it no bigger than 800 on the longest side. That's what I use and it is right at 800x533 for a landscape orientated picture

Sorry if this has been covered but is 800 x 600 is an acceptable size in either portrait or landscape orientation? Or is 600 the maximum height irregardless of orientation? If 800 high is acceptable then I count four images not in compliance- two are a hair too big and two are way too big. If 600 is the max height then a lot more are wrong.

If I'm not mistaken, Photobucket's 800x600 option uses 800 for the longest side regardless of orientation. In other words, an image with a 4x6 aspect ratio will be about 533 x 800.

Is it just me or..... does it seem like almost every request I make has to be followed by some sort of definition clarification?! I mean seriously, there wasn't a remark about editing that I could make that didn't turn into a 5 page discussion about editing. We aren't going to do the same thing with the picture size are we? I don't care wether it's 600x800 or 800x600 as long as it stays within that range!!

I can only comment on Photobucket and Flickr as these are the only 2 photo hosting sites I use.

With Photobucket there is an option right above where you choose to Browse for the files on your computer. It says "max image size: ### x ###. You can go in and change that. There is an option to choose 800x600. I've personally found this to be about the right size for posting pics in general. Anything bigger than that and the pics come out to big unless you have a 19" or bigger monitor.

With flickr there are as many as 5 options for sizes depending on the account you have. When you go under All Sizes, it tells you right under each size what the specific pixel size is for the image. For mine Medium is 500x333 and Large is 1024x681. So I use the Medium size for posting here, its smaller than photobuckets but the Large is just to big and makes the posts in each thread huge and most people have to scroll to the right to see the pic.

I don't think that this really applies to people shooting RAW on a full frame camera. Because of the crop factor (aka field of view multiplier) and the lower pixel density, it is not possible to get the equivalent acutance in a lower resolution image without resorting to....just kidding. 800x600 it is. :Saluting_face:

Oh, C'mon now andromeda. You know by now that if someone posted that they picked their nose today that it would go on for 5 pages of discussion! It would most certainly lead into a discussion about color! Heck, the threads that say IGNORE turn into hummingbird threads that go on for days!

Thanks for your hard work. I only wish I had some more WDW pics that I could share in your contests.
