I havent had a fever blister in years but woke up with a huge one this morning. What do you use to get rid of them?

Start taking L-lysine 3X a day. Use campho fenic (spelled wrong) or Lysine pluse coldsore ointment as needed. Or you could go to a dr. and get an rx for something stronger.

abreva! This stuff will work fast! Take the Lysine too!

For those who are predisposed to cold sores/fever blisters. You may notice that just prior to the eruption of the blisters, you get a tingling, sometimes itchy sensation, even when there is no sign of an impending outbreak of blisters. At this point, place ice directly on the area and hold it in place for at least 20 to 30 minutes. This is very effective at heading off an outbreak. I read this in Lancet a few years ago and it really does work.

I have used the prescription Valtrex and in the course of 1 day the 'growth' has stopped and the 'drying up period' is on the go. Within the week its been gone altogether!!

I have used the cream/ointment Acylovir. When I feel run down or stressed I use it just to "head" it off.

DawnCT.......thankkks for the information on ice.........I'll try that if need be.

I also heard Valtrex is good.

Just don't pick at it.......makes and awful scar....try using Alcohol to help dry it up and help stop the itching too.

Abreva is great product. Anytime I have a bad head cold, I get a fever blister. The second I feel the tingle I use the Abreva and it really keeps the fever blister from becoming really bad, and when used when the fever blister is already visible, it really shortens the life of the blister.

I use the ice trick and it works!

The only problem is, sometimes the tingling is at night and I sleep through it, then in the morning theres a cold sore on my lip... then I still use the ice to keep it from getting bigger... and I put CARMEX ($0.99 at Publix) on it and as long as you don't let it dry out, it'll begin to go away in a day.

I found that there are certain things that trigger them. For me it's apples, too long in the sun and/or wind, and stress. If I'm exposed to any of those I EAT YOGURT and that seems to help me. :) I think the cultures must do something to fight them off. I don't know the science behind it all, I just know that it works for me.

There's also an over-the-counter ointment called Viractin that works really well. I've also used a prescription pill called Famvir that helps a lot. The key to any remedy is to use it as soon as you feel the fever blister coming on.

Thanks for all the help! I tried the ice and got some Abreva. I guess time will tell... Hopefully next time I can be ready with some of these tips and start earlier. :)
