Last night when my kids and i were watching tv i broke out the can of deviled ham and ritz lol my little one screamed omg your trying to kill us haha. The dog wouldn't even eat it. I use to love little smokies wrapped in cresent rolls with cream cheese mom called them pigs in blanket i personally now find that disgusting. my kids won't eat that either. or remember portwine cheese with chopped nuts on butter crackers lol...

Totally remember the port wine cheese. Oh and the tiny pickle/olive tray and the toothpicks that looked like little swords to eat them. And Tequila Sunrises..okay I didn't get a tequila sunrise, but mom would let me have one sip.

Our pigs in a blanket were just little smokies in canned biscuits (half a biscuit each) I actually still like these. We make them for the twins and they love them.

I fed a lot of people today:

Breakfast (5 people): cereal w/ milk $1.25
Lunch (9 people): chicken fricassee w/ meatballs, marinated mushrooms, avocado salad, green pea salad, noodle kugel, potato kugel, iced tea, bottle of wine, brownies. $30
Dinner (6 people): leftovers from lunch. Free
Snacks: Tortilla chips w/salsa, cashew nuts $3.75

TOTAL: $35. I think this is pretty good.

Maybe it's my southern roots, but that just sounds so odd to me.

:cloud9: I am bonding with you. I can relate to all of your posts, as of late:cheer2:

I am from the North, though:rotfl: I would NEVER take money from my guests. And I would lay out a spread (do you call it a spread or a smorgasbord or something else?) for them from the minute they arrived until they second they departed:goodvibes

Although, I enjoy entertaining:thumbsup2

Some do not:confused3

To each their own. I guess:rolleyes1

I'm with you guys--when I have guests (including my adult siblings), better to have too much food than too little. I'm Italian, too, so I'm used to feasts when family gets together! It doesn't have to be expensive--BBQ chicken pieces, meatballs (always a favorite!), a whole turkey, etc. And I usually make a nice platter of cookies.

Usually when we do this, it's when we have a bunch of relatives coming in to see my kids in a recital or play. My MIL comes out, my sister comes out with her husband and MIL, etc. I'm running around with the kids, so I cook up the meatballs and turkey or whatever ahead of time, and that way everyone can eat all weekend. They're family, I don't mind them helping themselves, but I want them to be able to find something to eat for a quick breakfast or late night snack or whatever. I don't typically have "formal" meals for these weekends, although DH will make pancakes for breakfast. Really, it doesn't have to be expensive food--and frankly, my family would think I'd gone nuts if we did, say, a shrimp platter. But I like for there to be plenty.

good idea!

we have spagettios like one time a month. I usually take weekends off because we are so busy:banana: so I plan them for a weekend:woohoo:

I imagine the PB & Fluff do take alot of time during the week;)

I could not resist. :lmao: :lmao:

We cook our best meals with the best cuts of meat when we have guest. No way we take money from them especially when we server them crap.

I am from the north too and we do call it a spread.:thumbsup2

I'm curious do the owners of the farm tell you that's ok? just curious as I've never been to one that says that you can eat all you want while you are picking and it's free. Seems that if people took advantage of that it would really decline the profits for the farmer.

I can see both sides of the hosting debate.

One - as her brother I bet he would never dream of insisting on certain food because he has an odd diet. I dare say he's used to carting his own stuff around.

Two - in my family its not unusual for one person to leave cash for another person if that person is more needy. My grandparents lived in Orlando for years. When we would visit them and stay with them to go to Disney my Dad would always leave them money to make up for the cost of our food and anything else that they might of bought for us. We went to spend time with them (and the mouse ha) and didn't want to inconvenience them in any way.

Three - I also cook well for guests but I'm not going to blow my budget to do so. She was feeding a bunch of kids that lunch, kids love hotdogs.

Four - I would of fed them the good hotdogs because I don't like to hang on to things in my freezer. First in, first out. But the kids could probably care less.

My food for the day:
1/2 pitcher of tea throughout the day (20 cents)
2 small potatoes made into hash browns (15 cents, 5 pounds for $1)
2 pieces of sausage (22 cents, marked down pack of 18 for $1.99 with no preservatives)
a piece of cantelope (I dunno, 10 cents? They were $1 for a whole one)
Total - 67 cents

Lunch - 1/2 bag of a spaghetti meal (80 cents)
Total- 80 cents

Dinner - at my Dad's
He is providing chicken breast tenderloin bought on sale for $1.79 a pound
I am providing 1 pound of Grape Tomatoes (75 cents bought at the Farmer's Market) for snacking
I am also providing a bag of stir fry veggies for the chicken ($1)
My part - $1.75

Total for the day $3.22

I have to say that I have been peeking in this thread for ideas but we cannot feed our family for $10 a day. DH and I were talking about this last night. Dinner alone was 2 packs of chicken (bought on sale) and that was almost $10 alone. Add in the rest of the meal and we are way over. How do you serve meat as part of your meal and keep the price low? We have 3 small children (and 1 infant who is bfing) and I buy alot of fresh produce etc. There are never coupons for that stuff or meat. Maybe I am missing something? I don't serve meat every night but we do like it the majority of days during the week. What are your suggestions?

There are never coupons for that stuff or meat. Maybe I am missing something?

I just saved $8 in coupons on produce, meat, and milk last time I was shopping. Make sure you are signed up on your grocery store mailing lists, and check the paper fliers for coupons, not just the coupon books. We buy organic milk though...that's what one of the coupons was for.

it is just me and DH and DH just lost his job but I dont think I will be able to do $10 a day for the both of us even with coupons and access card:confused3

Would you mind telling me youyr recipe for the cashew milk, do you put maple syrup in yours? Also do you drink it or just use it for cereal and as a cream?

Two people are really easy.

Breakfast - Eggs & Toast - maybe $1
Lunch - sandwiches & soup - $2 (half pound of meat (something you cooked like chicken, not lunch meat), bread - can of soup)
Dinner - 1/2 pound of meat, 1 pound of stir fry - $2

Toss in some fruit and you are running $6-7 a day. Its when you start throwing lots of kids into the mix that it gets expensive and hard to do.

very creative! I will truly use this skeleton for my future meal planning thanks :goodvibes

Yes for cereal i use the maple syrup. But if we are going to drink it no i use roasted cashews then. Also can do the same thing with almonds and hazel nuts. Pecan milk is great for pumpkin pie. what i found for us if we want to drink it use the roasted it tastes great. if going to use for cereal and cooking use the raw and maple syrup but just 1 tbsp it goes a long way.

For meat, does your store reduce prices on stuff that is almost out of date? If so you can buy it, and freeze it, and defrost it when you want to use it. Also there are coupons for meat sometimes. I've had coupons for Perdue and Smithfield products before.

For produce buy what is on sale and in season. That helps a lot with cost. People will complain about spending $5 or $6 a pound on cherries, regardless of the fact that they were just on sale for $2.50 a pound. They should just buy the 99 cents a pound grapes that we are on sale this week.

Okay, who was da bum who recommended donut peaches??? (Was that you, mickeyfan2? Because I know you're the Amish corn person...). I tried these from the farm stand the other day and they were just unbelievable! I ate all 5! My kids got ZERO! I think I'm now hopelessly addicted--thanks alot!
