Okay, who was da bum who recommended donut peaches??? (Was that you, mickeyfan2? Because I know you're the Amish corn person...). I tried these from the farm stand the other day and they were just unbelievable! I ate all 5! My kids got ZERO! I think I'm now hopelessly addicted--thanks alot!
OMG! I love doughnut peaches.

I have to say that I have been peeking in this thread for ideas but we cannot feed our family for $10 a day. DH and I were talking about this last night. Dinner alone was 2 packs of chicken (bought on sale) and that was almost $10 alone. Add in the rest of the meal and we are way over. How do you serve meat as part of your meal and keep the price low? We have 3 small children (and 1 infant who is bfing) and I buy alot of fresh produce etc. There are never coupons for that stuff or meat. Maybe I am missing something? I don't serve meat every night but we do like it the majority of days during the week. What are your suggestions?

ITA!! I don't post here, but I do "lurk" (okay..I post when I have questions). I read here for much the same reason....I would LOVE to get ideas for spending less $$$ on groceries. I know we will NEVER spend $10 day, but I would sure like to get it down a bit. My only caveat is that I will only buy organics (well, dh and I do eat the "fried chicken breast" deli meat from Target...that is one of our "vices"). That makes our food very expensive. We do not eat a lot, and we waste NOTHING, but even so we average $30 a day for dh, me and dd (5). Of course, many posters here seem to be vegetarian. My dh and dd do not like beans, and my dh thinks we need meat at every meal.

If anyone has any good tips for eating organically more cheaply...I would really appreciate it!!

Only buy organics that are in season buying a watermelon that is organic and out of season will cost you 2.99 lb but buy organic apples in season will cost you .99 lb here.
Look for local food co ops also most of those are organic and might cost a fee to join like costco's if into organic and natural than worth the fee. I personally find organic not really worth the extra money because we learned one thing from a local farm, His water is not organic so it does not make it fully organic some farms waters systems have been treated with chemicals if you go to organic farms and are paying organic prices please ask them about the water they use they must disclose here if there water is pure well water or treated water.

If you are serving meat every day, you CANNOT average $10 per day. It is impossible (I am saying real meat, not hot dogs or spam). If the meat is organic, you won't even come close. Organic produce however is doable if you buy in season.

I disagree. I'm able to get pork loins that are just over one lb for $3 each, they last me at least three meals, so at most they are costing me $1 a meal. Chicken I can get for $1 to $2 a pound, and I can get at least two or three meals out of that, for 33 cents to $1 a meal. Ground beef I can get for $1 a pound and get at least two meals out of for 50 cents a pound. I've also gotten salmon, tilapia, and swordfish for $1 a portion. It's when I buy shellfish that I really splurge though, but considering what I pay ($4 a pound for shrimp, $8 for a pound of crabmeat,) it's still pretty cheap.

Here we go again. One chicken will (ordinarily) feed my family for one meal. I may be able to get one extra meal of leftovers out of it. Assuming $1 per lb, which is a lot less than I actually pay, each chicken will cost approximately $4. Now where are the veggies and starch for that one meal? Then let's count two more meals per day and snacks.

Now, fish at $1 per portion. OK. For 4 portions, that's $4. Again, where are the side dishes and the rest of the meals for that day as well as snacks?

Now those are your prices. I will tell you right now, that I cannot get food that cheaply and we are not even discussing organics.

If just over 1lb. of pork loins last you 3 meals, how many people are in your family? A family of 4 would normally eat 1lb of protein at a meal. That is 4 oz. each, not including the shrinkage for cooking. So actually you will get about 3 oz. per serving. Now, I do buy whole chickens on sale for .60 - .80 cents per lbs. The chicken will normally run me about $3.50 to $4.50 for a 5lb. bird. I will use this for 2 meals usually. We eat the most of it roasted for the first meal with veggies and a starch and then I will make chicken and noodles with the remainder later in the week. I usually take about 2 cups for the left overs to make it. If I were to buy a rotisserie at the grocery, it would only last one meal and be more expensive. But I really can't see how you make a 1lb of pork last 3 meals unless it's just you eating it, maybe with a child?

We eat more than a lb of meat. We are a family of 6. (5 of us eat table food one is an infant) I buy things on sale and have a freezer so I really stock up. Today I went shopping but didn't go for meat yet and my bill was about $500. Everything I bought was on sale. Even my fresh produce. I still need to stock up my freezer which we did about 3 weeks ago. I can feed us for $10 pp per day but not all of us.

Where are you buying your meat? I bought 1 pound of ground beef yesterday at the grocery store, 85-15 type, it was $4.69 a pound. Not organic, just your basic ground meat.

Ground turkey is a bargain at $2.99 a pound, again, not organic. Chicken $1.99 a pound on sale.

Fish? Salmon $8.99 a pound for frozen; shrimp is $16.99 a pound.

I cannot take credit for that. I'm too busy eating corn.:lmao:

How many people are you feeding? We are a family of 5. I will make pulled pork tenderloin (about a 1 1/2 - 2 lb. piece) & this will last us one meal with enough for a few more sandwiches. Pork tenderloin is about $4.49 per lb. on a good day.

This doesn't include the bbq sauce I add at $2 per bottle (get it from Famous Daves!!! :cool1: ) I could make my own & have, but why listen to my family say how much they loved Famous Dave's sauce when I used that! :lmao:

A good sale on boneless skinless chicken breast is $1.79 per lb. - big packs only. I make anywhere between 4-6 chicken breast per meal, depending on size & if DD's boyfriend is here. Again, we may have a piece left over for a chicken sandwich the next day.

Where are you buying your meat?
I'd like to know also. Do you buy from a wholesaler or something?

She is only feeding herself.

Maybe she makes the fluff from scratch. :confused3

Somewhere I actually have a recipe about making fluff from scratch. I never tried it, but I bet it's much better than the jarred stuff.

I'll have to imagine that recipe would make an awful mess in the kitchen. :rotfl:
