Fear of flying

I hate flying, but love to travel. I always take valium just before we are ready to board the flight. I feel it is better for those around me. Since I usually can't fly direct to Orlando anymore, the 2nd valium is usually taken during the layover, to get ready for the next flight.

I understand completely how you feel. I think you should take a Xanax to see how it affects you, to make sure the dosage is correct.

Good luck!

We have enough SouthWest points to fly for free but we are driving because my husband has the same fear as you because of not being in control. We are renting a 12 passenger van this time for the 8 of us that are going.

Drugs wouldn't really help my husband because he starts freaking out for about a month in advance of a flight.

I have no advice but just wanted to let you know you are not alone.

OP, I'm terrified!

I think that all depends on where the fear stems from. One year we took the Autotrain and I was scared on the train! I figure it must be about a lack of control.

Hi There,

I was referring to flying in the discussion. However you are totally correct, people can be afraid of any type of travel or even just leaving there homes.

I would strongly suggest before anyone mixes up their own drugs or drugs and alcohol remedies before flying, please go and check with your Doctor for a professional opinion of your personnel history, health and the effects of the drugs and alcohol may have on you.

ONLY a medical professional knows what he or she is talking about.:thumbsup2

This is probably my biggest issue. There are no direct flights so I always have to go through the anxiety of boarding twice. I think I'd do better w a direct flight. I need to check to make sure I have enough Xanax for two flights for departure and return. Thanks!

Thanks to everyone for the great responses!!!

I wanted to share that anxiety reducing exercise that mentioned. I thought it sounded a bit hokey at first, but it works!! This info is from SOAR:

5,4,3,2,1 exercise
Find something to focus on, and say to yourself (silently or out loud, as you prefer) "I see" and name something in your peripheral vision. Continue until you have made five statements.

Switch to hearing and say, "I hear" and name something you hear. Continue until you have made five statements. If you don't hear five different things, just repeat a previous statement.

Switch to touch, and say, "I feel" and name something you are touching. Continue until you have made five touch statements.

Then do a second round. On the second round, make four statements instead of five. Then do a third round making three statements. Then do a fourth round making two statements, followed by a final round in which you make only one seeing, one hearing, and one touch statement.

This exercise is just a way to focus temporarily on things that don't cause anxiety so that the stress hormones accumulated prior to doing the exercise can be used up. Repeat the 5-4-3-2-1 if you want to be more relaxed or fall asleep. If you lose count, that is a good sign because it means you are getting so relaxed that you are losing count.

It's like your car. Your foot on the accelerator causes gas to flow continuously into the engine. That keeps the engine revved up, Your thoughts about "what if" cause a continuous release of stress hormones. That keeps you revved up. Remove your foot from the accelerator, and your car slows down. Remove "what if" thoughts from your mind, and your mind and body calms down.

In other words, you don't have to force yourself to relax. Just stop the release of stress hormones and relaxation takes place. A couple of minutes of the 5-4-3-2-1 and you'll feel better. Use it anytime anxiety builds up. Also, use it every time you start to imagine something bad happening during your flight. If you repeatedly imagine a crash or imagine being in a state of panic during the flight, this imagination will become memorized. Once it is memorized, the thought or image no longer comes to mind as something that is not real. Instead, it comes to mind as something real. That can lead to the belief that you "just know" your plane will crash or that you are sure to panic.

Thanks mrsaumock.. I will give the technique a try next flight. It's so simple and seems that it would be easy to remember even when the fear starts. :)

Silly me, I decided a few years back that watching the Mayday series (plane crash investigations) would be helpful. Thought if I understood what made the planes we hear on the news crash, I would be relieved. Horrible idea!

OMG have you seen the new series "when planes crash"? I think that's what it's called. I noticed it when I was channel surfing the other day. Why on earth would they make a show about that?!? I was so upset when I saw it that I nearly threw the remote at the tv!!

And you're welcome for the other info. I've found the SOAR site to be very helpful and easy to read. I'm *almost* looking forward to trying some of the techniques the next time I fly - which is less than a month away. Eek!!!

I have not heard of that series... Omg! Sounds just as terrifying, yet strangely fascinating show Mayday! :s

I have a friend who is a pilot for the company Bearskin Airline (yes, it is real!). I asked him for advice.. His comment what : when there is turbulence, do what I do and close your eyes! I was on one of his flights and I have to say I did giggle when there was turbulence just thinking of his silly comment! He did answer a lot of my questions (What kind of magic makes plane stay in the air? What exactly causes turbulence?

Have a wonderful flight! I think you have all the tools needed to make it a success.. I am so excited about my November trip!!! As long as I go somewhere fun, I think the anxiety of flight is well worth it!
