Day 2: The Day TO Be Adults

This morning ended up being one of the more easy going ones to start; for me at least. I usually try to make it out for the daily sunrises; especially earlier in the cruise. But like the night before, I decided to just be “Mr. Family” this time. So I was able to sleep in a tad bit; and we even had breakfast delivered to us; instead of going somewhere in-particular.

The first activity set for today, would be to meet Anna and Elsa; then afterwards, go to the Princess Gathering. Being a Disney World Passholder, and hearing of the incredibly long waits (5+ hours) to meet Anna and Elsa; there is no way we would’ve passed up the opportunity to see them on this cruise; especially with the easy process of getting a ticket, and showing up at the appropriate time. The meet and greet with the sisters was held in Animator’s Palate. And because this was a well thought-out plan on Disney’s part; we only had to wait behind like 3 or 4 families. But upon entering, we noticed that something wasn’t quite right….. Anna wasn’t there!!! Apparently, she was “off in Arendelle” doing something or other. So that was a little disappointing. Later on the cruise, we got word that she had returned; but that first day was just our luck. Now I guess we do have the chance to look forward to seeing them together in Magic Kingdom. *rolls eyes* But whatever. At least we can do FastPass+; and even be flexible with when we do that.

After meeting the lovely Elsa, it was time to head over to the Lobby Atrium for the Princess Gathering. I know I mentioned it before; but getting to meet 4 Princesses within a matter of minutes is absolutely wonderful!!!! You don’t have to rush from line to line, and maybe on different floors. And it just frees you up to enjoy other things on the ship. The four we got to see were Cinderella, Ariel, Tiana, and Jasmine. Our DD is in the phase of saying Ariel is her favorite (she switches every so often); so it was nice to see her really light up when getting to meet her.

Oh yeah… the main reason we did room service for breakfast is because we just wanted something lite. Because today, we would be doing brunch at Palo!!!!! This would be the only time we’d be sending our DD to the Oceaneer Club. We don’t really do many Adult Only activities; but brunch is something we won’t pass up. So we take our daughter down, and are surprised that she doesn’t even look back!!!! Maybe it’s the coolness of the area, or that she’s used to being dropped off at daycare (and this is an AWESOME daycare); but there was no hesitation in her. It was quite amusing to see my “separation issue” having DW start to worry some. Heck, she doesn’t even like taking our DD to school, because of her issues (so yes, I drop her off basically everyday). So that was fun.

During our last cruise, Palo brunch was one of the best experiences we had on the ship. We kind of made the mistake last time of eating a pretty normal breakfast beforehand. But we wouldn’t make that same mistake twice. There were too many chicken parms, and other great dishes and desserts to be had!!!! I point out the chicken parmesan by itself for a reason…. The… Best… Chicken… Parm… Dish… I… Ever… Had!!!!! Normally, it would be an entrée I totally overlook. I like it and all; but it’s usually not anything special. At most restaurants, if I feel like I can make a decent version of something on my own (and I’m by no means a chef), I’ll tend to stay away. My wife on the other hand, doesn’t experiment when it comes to eating. So chicken parmesan, or most chicken dishes, are in her safe wheelhouse. But we she got it in 2012, and let me try it as well.. We ‘Ate’…. we ‘Loved’ it… and ‘Prayed’ for more!!!! (Yeah, yeah.. I know, I know…. But that’s our version).

So during our tour of brunch offerings; that was already on our list. The only other decisions would be “what else?”. To give a brief rundown on how brunch at Palo is done; your server (we had Ian, from South Africa… who was great!!!!) walks you over to the buffet portion, and talks you through the items (pastries, seafood, meats, cheeses, desserts, etc..); then tells you about the different entrees that are cooked-to-order. There was the chicken parm (we shared one, then my DW got another), a beef lasagna (I ordered this, and absolutely loved it), a beef tenderloin (which was also great), pizzas, and a couple of other items (like a breakfast thing, and a veggie thing I think). After the little tour, you can place an order for the main offerings, and head over to the buffet portion. One thing that was different this visit, is that you couldn’t grab the food on your own. There were other servers working that area that would plate things for you. The reason for this was to prevent the spread of germs. No, this didn’t happen in Cabanas at all; but I guess in the fine dining establishment, that level of service was to be enforced. I wish I would’ve been able to get my own food; because I sometimes just like to get very small portions of things, just see if I like them; instead of wasting. Or better yet, when I don’t know what something is; instead of feeling dumb and asking, I just get it and make do. But needless to say, everything there was just great!!! My wife did try a Strawberry Soup that she wasn’t too fond of (our waiter even said beforehand that he didn’t care for it… but people who like it, REALLY REALLY like it). But Palo brunch is probably something we’ll always do on future cruises. Maybe when our DD is older, we’ll bring Palo dinner back into that rotation. Brunch will happily do for now though. ;)

On an additional note, the décor in Palo is simply beautiful!!!! There’s a nice comforting feel to the place. All of the gondola art is amazing (‘Palo’ mean ‘pole’ in Italian; and refers to the poles that the gondolas get attached to). There’s one table setup to where if you use your flash while taking a picture, it’ll light the sky in the wall art behind it, to make it seem as if you’re looking out of a window in Venice (see previous trip report). You’re not rushed at all during the service (they even ask if you want to or not). And every table gets a view of the ocean (I believe I learned that later on in the cruise…. more on that later). But I could spend A LOT of time taking pictures of all the details and views in there. One of these cruises, I might have to inquire on the best time to really try that. I think I actually said that last trip report. Shows how much I stick to my plans. ;)

Hi Scott. Totally enjoying your trip report.
I was wondering if you happened to have a picture of your Palo server, Ian from South Africa. The reason I ask is that on our Fantasy cruise in Oct. 2013 our Assistant Server was Ian from South Africa, and I was wondering if it is the same person. He was such a wonderful Assist. Server and a joy to talk with each evening of our cruise.
Thanks! Looking forward to reading more of your report!

Sorry, but I don't. Now if you have a picture of him, I could confirm it or not though. My guess is that it's probably the same guy.

Here is a pic I have of him. If it is the same person, I think it is great that he moved up to a server in Palo. We enjoyed him as our assist server so much.

Yep!!!!! That's him!!!!!

Yep!!!!! That's him!!!!!

Wasn't he just great? So very personable, and really good at his job. And I believe he was only 21 at the time our cruise last year, so about 22 now. He told us about his family and was always truly interested in what we did each day. I hope to be able to seem him again when we sail next year.

We enjoyed our brief time with him. I could definitely see him being great night after night though.

Hey Scott, I was on your cruise and wish I had known your wife was on her own at the meet and greet! I was in the thick of the mayhem for the trick or treat candy and we would have totally put her to work (just what she would have wanted, I'm sure!)

I can't wait to see your pictures, based on your last TR, they will be awesome. And not all Nikon users are bad, BTW. :rotfl:

I keep thinking I will write up a quick report myself, but can't seem to make the time...

Keep posting so I can relive through you!

Also looking forward to the next installment of your TR and your pictures. Always love to see your pictures.

Even a not-so-detailed report would be nice. Heck, as you can see, I'm not necessarily pumping this one out too quick. But it'd be cool to see this cruise through someone else's eyes.

After brunch was finished, and knowing our daughter was away; it was time for the REAL adult time to start. As in; my wife would take a nap, while I went out to take pictures!!!! While the kids are away, the adults will play….. or sleep. ;) I usually save my photo outings for when my wife and daughter are asleep, or just resting up. If we’re out together, I’ll grab some shots here and there; but I won’t get too crazy. I don’t want to be a total pain when it comes to that; although my wife seems to thinks I go nuts (I could rant about that; but I’ll keep my happy face on for now ;) ).

IMG_0529 by Scott Smith (SRisonS), on Flickr

So I head out, and make my way down to Deck 4. I don’t always have a big plan, or shot list or anything, when it comes to photography. I pretty much just go with whatever hits me at the time. But if anything, I know that there are some pretty good photo opportunities to be had on that level. You might have to get creative some. But Deck 4 makes it easy. While grabbing my first couple of shots from down there, I notice a somewhat familiar figure heading towards me (and in turn, messing up a shot…. Just playing). But I see that it’s my Flickr contact, Arthur!!! Besides briefly saying ‘hello’ at Port Canaveral, and him stopping at our table in Palo (his family was finishing brunch there as well), this would be the first time I get to chat some with him. I gotta say, he’s such a delightful dude. He was doing a few laps around the track, to work off said brunch. But it was nice to just talk shop a little bit. He had a camera with him as well; but we didn’t take a single picture while together. Oddly enough, photographers getting together doesn’t mean just shooting to your heart’s content. There’s a lot of chit-chatting; with knowing that if you want to stop and grab pics, it’s totally cool. You won’t ever be “that person”. So we walked a few laps, and just talked; then it was time for me to go pick-up my daughter.

Going in, I was uncertain on how she would react to having to leave there. Without really knowing, I KNOW she would have a good time there. But oddly enough, there were no temper tantrums to be had when she had to leave. So after getting our DD something to eat; it was time to hit the Mickey pool and Nemo’s Reef, before we had to get ready for dinner. Going in the Mickey pool was something we were looking forward to doing. Not that it’s super unique or anything. But because Samantha was out of diapers, and fully potty-trained; we at least had the option of going in there or not. Last cruise, she also wasn’t “that kid”, like a couple of others were when they were in the pool in swimmy diapers. I’d say that Nemo’s Reef was more fun for her though. She could run around and stuff; and the water effects were nice.

Dinner tonight was held at Enchanted Garden. And it was also Formal Night!!!! One cool thing to look forward to during this evening, would be seeing the Fine Whines play. And it’s not their musicianship as much as it is seeing the little kids having a good time dancing to the music. Although there weren’t many children dancing this time around, our DD sure didn’t disappoint. She’s not one to miss out on the chance of grooving to some tunes.

IMG_0621 by Scott Smith (SRisonS), on Flickr

One little pleasant surprise upon entering Enchanted Garden is that we had our own personal photographer!!!! Well… not an official one. But our server grabbed my camera, and was taking a lot of pictures of us. And she did a pretty good job as well!!!! And I guess I should mention who we had as a serving crew through the week. Our main server was Sheree (from Thailand). And the assistant server was Anxious (from Zimbabwe). We really really enjoyed them both. Sheree was absolutely loaded with energy. She was total go go go all the time. But she was always fun and attentive. And Anxious was just a really nice guy. Pretty opposite in energy of Sheree. But at least there was a nice balance between them. And yes, Sheree was our photographer for tonight. ;)

Super steady hands for this one…… 1/10 sec exposure!!!!
IMG_0578 by Scott Smith (SRisonS), on Flickr

One thing I’ve noticed this cruise, is that during dinner, they’re doing more stuff for the kids. I can’t say if it’s something more recent; or if they’ve always done it, but more for kids that were a little older (since it was our 2 y.o. DD and another 3 y.o. at our table last time). But our server would do little origami animals for the kids; and most nights they were done before we even got to dinner. And the servers would also do riddles and brain-teasers each night as well. They were little things that made a big impact. Anything to help keep kids at bay during dinner is welcome. It’s one thing if you’re in Animator’s Palate, and have many cools things to grab your attention. It’s another thing to be in the other restaurants that aren’t as kid friendly.

Here’s one of the brain-teasers…. Move 1 toothpick to make 4 triangle…..

Hey Scott! I knew I recognized you... I'm @chloelovesdisney on IG ^_^ we're booked for the same itinerary for Sept 2015! Love your TR, Subscribed!

Also, if you don't mind me asking, what type of canon do you have? Planning on purchasing one soon!

Hey Chloe!!!! Thanks for following. Have you done a Disney cruise before??? If not, you'll absolutely love it. Having a good camera will also be a great thing as well; because there are endless photo ops.

But i shoot with a Canon T4i. And my lens lineup is: Canon 18-135, Canon 10-22, and a Sigma 18-35 f/1.8. And all of them were put to work this cruise.

Good luck in your camera search. Have any questions about cameras or the cruise, don't hesitate to ask.

Yes this will be my 3rd, DH's 2nd ~ we honeymooned aboard the Dream! This will be our first time on the Fantasy! We can hardly wait!

Thank you, you'll more than likely hear from me regarding cameras!

Wowie!! What time were the Elsa/Anna and princess meetings? We also have brunch the first sea day -- I hope they don't conflict!

I think our time was around 9:30 or 10. But they are there more than one day. So you should be able to find a decent time.

Tonight’s show, in my opinion, is the best one of the week… Aladdin!!!! Sure, we all know how the story plays out. But the performance by the Genie is absolutely amazing. And I love how they infuse pop culture related humor that is actually current. Very well done aspect to keep the show feeling “new”.

During tonight’s Deck 11 trip for some late night munchies, I noticed that the Sunday night football game was being shown on FunnelVision. I didn’t make a point to stop and watch, as I knew that I’d be back out soon for a nighttime photo-taking mission. But I love the fact that the ship makes full use of the FunnelVision screen. It’s not too often (unless it’s real late, or real early) that a movie or something isn’t being shown there. So if you’re a football fan, definitely be aware that there’s somewhere good to go if want to catch a night game (I believe MNF is also shown…but you also get ESPN in the room for that as well). O’Gills Pub is another option though.

A Quiet Night At The Falls by Scott Smith (SRisonS), on Flickr

So it was time for my first night outing to grab some shots of the ship. I always have grand schemes in my head to make it out a few nights, to really take advantage of my time there; but it never works out that way. I think I only went out like 2 or 3 nights. Although I mentioned before that I don’t ever really plan things our when it comes to photography; there is one thing I try and do. I started this when we stayed at the Beach Club a while back. But the 1st night, I would just use a certain lens, and shoot handheld the whole time. The lens is great for low-light shooting, and gives a nice bokeh (background blurring) effect at times. I also see it as a scouting mission for when I take my tripod out (which is usually the following night). And just a note to anyone that might want to use a tripod at night on the ship….. it can be VERY windy sometimes!!!! The ship tends to pick up speed when everyone is asleep (at least is seems that way). And the various wind barriers only help a little in certain spots. So just keep that in mind. This night though, was oddly calm. I think that we might’ve been close to our first destination (Cozumel), so maybe they decided to take it easy. But even standing at the front of the ship at Satellite Falls was pretty eerie. You didn’t get the sense that you were gonna get blown away (like usually happens…. the feeling… not actually getting blown away). And the sight and feeling of the calm endless darkness didn’t help anything. It was the perfect night for tripod shooting though; because you didn’t have to fight the wind. But I stuck with my handheld plan because I was being lazy. Needless to say, I kicked myself a little for that, later on. Then again, when going handheld, you probably need even more help to try and stay still. So I guess it did kind of worked out nicely.

So I walked around outside a bit, before heading back indoors. I knew I could shoot the interior pretty much anytime. But in case the weather started acting up tonight, I at least was able to do what I mainly had planned. And as a nice little surprise, I saw that the Pumpkin Tree had sprouted pumpkins!!!! I’m not sure when they “grew”; but they were there in full glory. And all of them were lit inside. That was also a reason I wish I had my tripod this night. Because the lights inside them aren’t on all the time. :( I had a successful outing though. I was able to skip some areas, because I was happy with those pictures from our last cruise. But there’s always something new to discover.
