Family is afraid to fly....any suggestions?

I have driven to WDW for all our trips in the past leading up to our Magic cruise back in October. We finally got on a plane and flew down with a group of friends to get the ship. I have only one thing to say about my flying experience......I WILL NEVER DRIVE THAT FAR AGAIN! I can't imagine what I was thinking all the previous 15 hour trips to the World. I have no suggestions to really help you. The only reason we finally did it is because we had to travel with our group to stay together. Make plans to travel with friends who fly regularly and they really help in calming the anxiety of that first flight. I know I've only done 1 round trip so far, but I love flying already!

I wish you luck and safety in your travels.

I just finished my lessons at www.fearofflyinghelp.com and it has helped me tremendously. I reccommend it to anybody who has that fear!

I am going to try this! I will take anything that will remove my fear of flying. The fear is so bad for me that on our last trip I was in the seat crying so hard gripping extremely tight to a family member's hand. I was shaking all over and was so tense. This was during the take off. I hope that this website will cure me this rather "annoying" fear. I am going to look at it now. Thank you for sharing this with us!! :teeth:

This is how scared I am: won an all expenses paid trip to the Bahamas about 15 years ago from the travel agency that the place I work for used (there were four employees who won the trip so we were all going to go together). I'd never flown before because I was terrified - Had about 1 week to give them the "okay" or they would give it to someone else at my workplace. Agonized, agonized, agonized and finally decided on the morning of the last day that I had to give my "yea" or "nay", that I would go. Hubby takes me to the airport and by the time we're there, I swear my hands were sweating so bad you would have thought I'd just had them in water! Went immediately to the airport bar, drank three 7&7's, finally flight was ready to go - had three Bloody Mary's on the flight (and mind you, it was a less than 2 hr. flight). Anyway, I had to MAKE myself not think about the flight home or I would not have enjoyed the Bahamas at all. No turbulence, no problems, on either leg of the flight - but I was so scared! My one and only flight! Anyway, when we were deciding to take this trip, DH says, "If you would just fly, we'd be down there in no time at all. We'd hardly be up in the air before we were back down. Otherwise, we're looking at about a 12-hr. drive." I debated for about two days, then decided that it wasn't worth worrying about flying for four more months, and then I wouldn't be able to able to enjoy WDW while I was down there worrying about the flight back. So my suggestion is: if you've got people who REALLY are scared to fly, it is probably better for all involved and you'll have a much better time anticipating the trip and enjoying the trip once you're there, if you DRIVE! Of course, this is JMHO.

Thanks for the all the advice everyone. My kids are 8 and 10. I asked my 10 yr old if he thinks he could fly and he says yes. Still not sure how the 8 yr old will be, I think she'll be OK.
My only other concern is my husband. He says he has no desire to fly, but he recently won a hunting trip to his choice of Mexico or Argentina for November 2006. So, he knows his only option for those trips is to fly. I am going to tell him this Disney flight can be like an educational experience for him. If he can handle the flight from Ohio to Florida he can be prepared for a much longer flight this fall. Hope that makes sense to him.

Thanks all...

:cool1:

:scared: I don't like to fly!! I say take Xanax!!! It works for me. 1 the night before and 2 right before my flight. (0.25 mg) I call my Dr a week before I leave and ask for 6 pills. It takes all my fears away :rotfl2:

Hello, I am planning on taking my family to Disney World in April. Been there 3 times in the past and drove all the way from Ohio each time. Well I told my husband and kids that I do not want to drive and want to fly this time. I am fine with flying and have done so several times recently for work I was doing. Everyone here is not happy with the flying idea. I keep telling them it will be so much faster. But they still seem very leery.

Here in the past month they saw the plane accident in Chicago and the seaplane crash in Miami. My son says to me after seeing on the news "and you want to fly to Disney". I am afraid of booking flights and get to the airport and my two kids start freaking out.

Should we just drive down from Ohio or think of some way to make everyone more comfortable about flying?

Any ideas?
:confused3

Flying is safer. There are all kinds of websites with statistics about flying vs driving. Of course is they are young that might not be a great idea. Next thing you know they are upset about a drive to the store...LOL.

Oh, tell them if they fly it is Disney in three hours. woo hoo. The quicker the better right? :goodvibes

The biggest risk to flying is ending up with someone else luggage or none at all.
