There are family members in our party of seven that will be going to the world with us in September and we are counting on free dining. But we are splitting up the seven of us at dinner because they refuse to pay a 18% tip.:sad1: Their tale is how free is it if we have to chunk down a $30-$40 tip every night!! They want to leave a flat $5 at every table. Anyway I am somewhat glad that we will be split!!!! I really don't know how to change their minds about this situation.

You may want to go to entirely different restaurants. Or at least pretend you don't know them.

$5....times 2... $10 for a party of 7?!:scared1: I would choose my own dining party. Hopefully, you can find 2 more in this group that feel like you do.

Ugh, so sorry you have to deal with this. I cannot stand people like that!

I wouldn't pretend anything. I would deny -- on penalty of death -- that I knew them.

And I would tell them WHY we weren't dining together -- and don't speak to me in a restaurant -- because they are embarrassing to be around.

You can't change them, but you don't have to BE them.

Are you all in separate rooms? If not, it won't work to split up at the restaurant. They'll get hit with 18% anyway, it says that in the Disney Contract that someone posted yesterday.

I think you helped me yesterday when I asked something about this same question so I am sorry to ask you again. But I was still wondering....Even though we are a Grand Gathering of 9, we are two families in two separate rooms. We are families of 6 people and 3 people. So either the family that is 6 people will get the automatic 18% gratuity, and the other family won't. Or.... like you said the 18% will be on both our bills because we are a party of 9.

Maybe it won't matter if we are in separate rooms because we are still a party of 9.

What do you think? Thanks for being so great about explaining this!!!

Apparently you are all adults, tell them what you're telling us then make your own plans. You don't need to get a GG to have a blast at Disney.

I think the only way around an automatic tip is to make completely seperate reservations for under 6 people each. If you want to eat at the same restaurants you would probably not get the same time for an ADR or be seated next to eachother in that case. As I understand it, anytime you make one reservation for more than 6 people (even if you have to be split into 2 tables) you are going to get the automatic tip.

If your entire group is on the same ADR, or present yourself as a single party which is then split up to occupy two tables because the restaurant doesn't have big enough tables for your party, and there are more than 5 in the group, you should get an automatic gratuity added. It doesn't matter if you are one family or two, or if your party is split up into separate room reservations. It also doesn't matter whether you are on the dining plan or not, or if there are infants or toddlers in your party, or if some of the party members are not ordering anything. If there are more than 5 of you at the table, or in a group that is presenting itself as one party, the automatic gratuity is supposed to be added.

You would have to have separate ADRs, if you had ADRs, and sit at separate tables to split up for the purpose of avoiding the autograt.

I am glad to hear that you dine at TS separately. :thumbsup2

Then you can enjoy your TS and don't have to stress about whatever they do or do not leave for tip.

You can't be responsible for their actions, just your own. :)

What he said! I would put up with it.

They did this sort of thing on our Disney cruise as well. Its just awful!!

Amazing, some people are just too much.:sad2:

I just don't get it. If they can afford the vacation, then they can afford the tips that are associated with the vacation.

If they can't/won't pay the tip, then they should keep their butts home.
