I've read Carnival is not stopping at Falmouth.....I know there is a LOT of Jamaica hate out there...

Is DCL considering dropping this port? Any rumors/info?

Why is there a lot of "Jamaica hate out there"? I haven't read anything about this.

In searching various sites, there is a LOT of negativity...I have no personal experience

I'm booked on a Fantasy WC for March 2017 and we are stopping in Falmouth. Inside the port area isn't bad, but once you leave those gates it's awful and I would not feel safe as a female walking those streets.

Every single person I have ever met that went to Jamaica said they did not feel safe. One included a friend who cut his trip when he was golfing and saw that there was barbed wire and armed guards on the course. He decided he didn't want to be somewhere that needed such intense security like that. I've never been though. I always wanted to go and do the rain forest bobsled.

We saw armed guards in many of the Mexican ports we stopped at -- both in the ports and on the streets. We just did excursions and stayed close to the ship, but we stayed alert. I think anywhere you go nowadays will have some sort of questionable history.

True. I think his thing was the fact the course used a barbed wire fence and he said of all the places he has golfed and caddied he has never experience a golf course that your ball could roll past the barbed wire fence and the security was so visible. It is interesting for someone who lives in a city where armed guards are a pretty standard thing (Times Square anti-terrorism task force) so I have to imagine it was more than just an armed guard to make him feel like he wanted to leave early and told me he wouldn't go back.

I think people tend to blow things out of proportion. We honeymooned in Jamaica in the year 2000 at a Sandals resort and back then there were broken glass bottles cemented into the walls surrounding the resort. we went on several excursions and never felt unsafe. we are heading to falmouth in december and have booked a private tour with a company who has great reviews on ta

I read this a few years ago. A little rusty on my facts but didn't they stop last winter or the winter before and just do the Star Wars day at sea? I thought it did not go over well so they brought back the 4 ports for the western.

FWIW we loved Jamaica and it is one of our favorites but perhaps it was due to our excursion to Blue Hole and the fact I like the natural side of the islands. The walled part in Falmouth is nice but it lacked that natural Caribbean vibe I personally like. We did have our moments though, my dh was offered drugs 3 times in a span of 15 minutes on the beach. We did not stay there long despite the sand and water being amazing. The driving is crazy but we really enjoyed ourselves. People always complain about Nassau too and that is the one I have felt the most uncomfortable with but it was short lived and all the other times were fine. That is one they do need to get rid of as it is just over played too much!

We have been to Jamaica twice (2014 and 2015) and have never had a problem or felt unsafe on our excursions.
However, in Costa Maya Mexico (which I think was replaced by Jamaica a couple of years ago) we were on an excursion to the ruins and our bus was stopped at a checkpoint where a couple of AK47 (I think that is what my son told me the guns were...they were big though and looked pretty powerful) armed police stepped onto the bus. There were also police at the port fully armed in large numbers. This would have been November 2013 and our first cruise on the Fantasy.
Cozumel also has armed guards but I think those were handguns and certainly not the type I saw in Costa Maya.

I don't think Carnival ever stopped in Falmouth, they've always stopped in Ocho Rios, I'm booked for a stop there on the Vista next June.

As far as I know, we are stopping in Falmouth in December of this year. There are lots of dangerous places in Jamaica. We stayed there for our niece's wedding 3 years ago (near Negril) and even people I know from Jamaica warned us about leaving the resort. However, the resort we stayed at was awesome and I'd consider going there to that place again. We're doing a DCL tour so I'm not worried. And in any place you go (even in Toronto close to where we live) you need to be careful about where you go.
