I'm of the opinion that the only time you should "fake" anything is if you're doing an entertainment (recorded) show (sitcom, drama, movie, etc). Anything live should not have anything inserted that's not naturally there.
The exception I would have to this would be on screen graphics.
With the low crowds we're missing an opportunity to hear the players and coaches on the field/court. Instead we get to hear fake noise from fans who aren't there.
I think it's funny. I'm not a sports fan so I had to ask DH why in the world I could hear all the fans when I thought no one was attending games. It sounds exactly the same as it always has from the other room.
I don’t mind it, but it will be no substitute tomorrow when the Saints host the Bears. It would be pure insanity with a full house. I miss the crowd shots more than I am annoyed by the fake noise.
Not having live TV I have not watched any sports at all for over a year, so I haven't experienced the fake crowd noise. But I do think the cardboard cutouts, which I have seen, are pretty stupid.
Made my mom and I laugh when we noticed it during the first Sox game when the season began. It doesn't bother me (I don't watch enough sports on tv to care). Definitely better than the overpriced cutouts. The Sox offered me a cardboard cut out... for $500. No thanks! Out of my price range. Free?... then we're talking.
I never even noticed the fans weren’t there until I just looked at the football game on tv right now. I just heard the cheering and stupidly thought everyone was there. Yeah. I’m not very observant.
I didn't like it UNTIL I actually attended a game.
In a 100,000 seat Stadium with only about 10,000 Fans there, without SOME crowd noise piped in,the "atmosphere" in the Stadium would have felt even worse than it did.
