Can I bring my EZ pass transponder to use in my rental car? If I can figure out how to get the velcro to release, that is.

No, you cannot use EZPass in Florida...they use Sunpass....
I assume you are renting a car in FL....

The Florida Sunpass, for example, will not work in New York, nor will the E-Z Pass in Florida. But the 12 agencies in the E-Z Pass Interagency Group, which come from six Northeast states -- New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Massachusetts -- have set mid-2000 as the time to have all their toll roads electronic.

If you are renting a car to drive down to Florida and want to use the EZ pass on the tolls within the EZ pass system, yes, you can transfer the pass from one car to another. If you are just using it for Florida, go with the answer above mine.

Thanks for the replies. We are arriving on a Saturday, and I have to go back to the airport on Sunday to pick up my parents. I'm so spoiled by the EZ pass lanes, I was hoping to be able to use the ones in Florida.

I heard on the Dis Unplugged podcast that you can purchase the Sunpass at Publix. I saw on the Sunpass website that the transponders cost $25, but it doesn't say if you have to add more money to it to use it. $25 would be bad, but I wouldn't want to pay $50. We're going in April and December, so I thought it may be worth it to get one. Does anyone have informaiton on the prepaid Sunpass transponders?

Thanks!
Kim

You have to PURCHASE the Sunpass for $25, then add a minimum of $25 in prepaid tolls to it.

Aren't the rental companies coming out with a program that people can get transponders for rental cars?

Thanks, that's what I thought. Not worth it for a few trips back and forth. I'll just make sure I have correct change with me!

Most of the car rental companies will offer you prepaid tolls at $2/day. You have to agree to it at the time of the rental, and you just go through the Sunpass/E-Pass/O-Pass lanes. The cameras know the plate and process it accordingly.

It's $5 a day, not worth it for a weeks rental if you're only going to the airport and back a couple times. There are never more than a few cars queued up to pay a toll at any given plaza during that stretch, so I wouldn't worry about it.

And not all the rental companies are offering it. Alamo and National are not on the list (so far).

heh... Avis had signs up offering it to for $2/day less than a month ago.
