Eye Drops w/ Contacts - anyone done this?

I just got back from my regular doctor and I've got pink eye in one eye. I don't have glasses and am severly nearsighted so I've still got a contact in my good eye.

He said I can put one drop in the good eye for four days to prevent it spreading and I could put it in with the contact lense! I've never put drops in my eye with my contacts and wanted to see if anyone ever has?

Thanks for your help! Pink eye and nearsightedness don't mix very well.

I don't wear contacts but a friend of mine does and he uses drops all day while his contacts are in. Doesn't seem to be a problem.

I've put "re-wetting" drops in with my contacts in...or visine...but never pink eye med.

If i were you - to be on the safe side - invest in some glasses and toss out that pair of contacts AND the case...I kept re-infecting myself by not sanitizing or tossing ALL my used contact stuff.

and I'm very very nearsighted (-9.00) which is why I don't have back-up glasses, havent' been able to in wear years (since I was a kid) since they are so thick, the distortion always made me sick to my stomache.

I know rewetting drops are okay, but not so sure about antibiotic drops.

Thanks for the answers so quickly!

:earseek: omg...I'm so sorry!

have you looked into lasik? My husband was very nearsighted too...mid 4's maybe? and he had it done nearly 3 years ago. loves it

I agree with tossing the contacts and getting a new pair. I had pink eye once and this is what they advised me.

As a former pink eye queen, I wore my glasses as a back-up BUT since you do not have glasses, you are stuck!! If he said it's okay to put the drops in & wear the lens, I'm sure that it is...

Also, on a side note, I finally did find a product that would completely disinfect the other lens (I didn't wear disposables at the time)--Clear Care by Ciba...I always had pink eye in one eye, but spread it to the other & then would re-infect myself when I put my lenses back in after two weeks. A Ciba rep clued me in on the solution & I was grateful.

My doc says that pink eye is more common for people who wear regular (non-disposable) contacts, so he finally switched me into monthly disposables & I haven't had pink eye since!

Lots of luck!

My vestibular system is very sensitive (I've spent the last two years with a constant mild case of vertigo caused by a recurring case of strabismus) and surgeries, fevers, etc. or mixing up signals to my eyes(like the strabismus) makes it worse, which is why the distortion of glasses makes me sick as well...

Dr. says I could have eye surgery to correct the strabismus which might or might not cure the vertigo but I'm going to be prone to this for the rest of my life...it is mostly an inconvenience, and not at all serious - But Mission Space is out of the question!

I shared this particular trait with an aunt, who up until her late 80's was otherwise, very healthy.

Im about the same prescription and for years I wouldnt wear my glasses anywhere. OMG the horror! ;) I had an instance where my contact lenses got washed down the drain(thanks to 2yo DS) over July 4th weekend...when I couldnt get a doctor to get me new ones. I was stuck and had to wear the glasses. They too made me sick to my stomach. However since then I have started wearing the glasses around the house more and more to get used to them. Its really helped. This was years ago, but now I can wear the galsses(in private of course, LOL) and feel fine.

As for wearing the contacts, Ive had infections in my eyes in the past and wearing them while healing was a big NO from my doctor. I have put drops in my eyes with contacts in, but was never allowed to wear them at all while having an infection. Hopefully yours is a lesser type of infection and wearing them is ok. Good luck! I know how frustrating this can be!

As already suggested....throw out the contacts and the holding case AND the solution bottle (your hands have infected that too). You should not be wearing contacts at all....even in the good eye. Medication drops should be placed in the eye with NO contact lense and you should wait at least 10 minutes before putting lense back in eye OF THE NON-INFECTED EYE. Just pray the pink eye does not jump to your good eye. You really should have a pair of glasses. I went 10 years with no glasses and found out the hard way that you should give your eyes a break. I got a bad infection in my eye caused from scratches of a contact lense. Unknown to me, I had a predisposed condition in that eye and the infection flared it up and as a result, I suffered 2 years with a very rare eye disease....most people keep it the rest of their life. Due to the disease, I was told I could never wear a contact in that eye again and since my eyesight is as bad as yours, I was prisoner to glasses until I got Lasik. A very costly solution. Please get yourself a pair of glasses.

Eek...my doctors always told me to ditch the contacts and only wear glasses until the infection cleared up and, as has been mentioned previously, throw away the contacts I was wearing and start fresh with brand new ones after everything was back to normal.

Good luck!

JMHO.

Be blind for a few days til your pinkeye clears up. Toss the contacts you have, along with your case.

I am also VERY nearsighted and feel your pain.
