I am not a hardened, mean person. But if anyone else is watching this, WHY were these people chosen to get a new house? My dh watched the intro, and he couldn't understand either.

Anyone?

Beth

p.s. After the intro, I turned it off...but the question remains!

well......not everyone has to be dying to get a home makeover, do they??

i'm not being mean or anything, i rarely watch the show, but it does get kind of annoying when you see other people getting these things done because there's something wrong. there's a lot of people out there who are in "ok" health but still need a new home, you know?

I'm switching back and forth between this and Grease. I didn't see what the situation is with these people.

I pieced together the parts I heard with what DH told me. We got that it is a man and a woman, each have half-grown (or mostly grown) kids. They have separate households, but the house where they could live together is in sad shape.

I asked my question in the OP because dh and I cannot figure out what else??

Not that families have to have something major wrong, but with so many people in such great need, I thought the show targeted people in near-hopeless situations...which makes it really heartwarming.

That's the thing...it sounded like they have 2 homes -- his and hers. :confused3

Man, they're not even going to save those kitchen cabinets?! They looked nice. This sucks.

DH is over here asking the same thing. We actually worked on an Extreme Home Makeover where the twin daughters had cancer and the family desperately needed help. We have a blended family also with 8 kids, yours, mine and ours, and no one was helping us to get a larger home. Of course, we didn't apply either. I find it hard to believe that there wasn't a needier family than this one.

I'm with you guys... We have two apparently healthy and able-bodied adults, who have several almost-grown children between them. I'm sure not seeing any reason they need outside help to find a place to live together.

These are just normal, average, regular people... I assume they have jobs and all of the regular opportunities everyone else has to decide how to use their income. :confused3

Two people want to get married and merge their families... you sell his house, give notice at her apartment, and buy or rent something a little bigger. Happens everyday, no big deal.

And it looks like almost all of these kids will be leaving the nest in the next couple of years. What gives?

Glad that dh and I were not the only confused ones, at least. looked to us like most of the kids won't even be minors for much longer, so we were just feeling clueless.

Beth

I just turned it on and now it looks like EM is going to be paying for these people to get married in Paris?!?!?!?! I don't really watch this show, but do they always send the people away on a fancy trip?

They could sell both of them and buy something bigger. :confused3

they probably won't have enough money between the two.

i still don't get why it's a huge deal that these people were chosen?? so what if they're a normal family? normal middle-class families need help sometimes, too.

i'm sure they'll make up for it next week with some regular EM:HE warterworks fest.

We are a family of 6, with a too-small 3 br home. We'd qualify as well, I gather. They are a family of 7. Most of them look working age. Oh, well. Not my show...personally, I would have wanted to give this HUGE gift to a more needy family who would otherwise be unable to do it for themselves.

DH says he'd have never been able to ask ABC for a house, being an able-bodied man with an able-bodied significant other. I guess he'd feel less manly??

LOL. I don't watch this show, actually, but you are probably right. I guess I just never realized folks like me could apply!! I really thought I had missed a key detail.

I agree with your DH. Going to commercial they showed the family at the unveiling with hundreds of people behind them. I would be embarrased. Not only that I had to ask for a handout, but that the handout was so extravagant. Also these people were just all teary-eyed about how ABC gave them this most perfect wedding like they wouldn't have been able to get married with them. It doesn't take a miracle to get married. :confused3

Oh and I forgot ABC had to buy them rings too.

the only thing with them is i would be afraid to have anything outside. did you see the neighborhood they're in?? yeah i wouldn't want to keep anything in that nice new backyard they have.

and how about next week's episode?? i don't get that yet. they live in an attic....right? so....are they remodeling the whole apartment FOR them, or just the attic again? lol.

I just looked up the family (families) on the website. Between them they have two 18 year olds, a 16 year old and 2 14 year olds. I'm thinking the 18 year olds need to get jobs and pitch in a little money to help the parents out. The mom rents an apartment, and the dad lives in a house that is falling apart. Its over 100 years old. They have little things like the only bathroom doesnt work, the fridge is broke, the basement walls are falling in.

I agree with the rest, I'm not sure why this family qualified. Seems like with 4 "adults" in the combined households they could take care of themselves.
