Everyone Please Read! Very Important!

I'm almost certain that they said whoever their people were, were pretty much spotted out by those two users.

It was some guy saying that he was in Uni and did a study on online fraud, and he was studying various teen boards for their likelihood of that sort of thing.

IDK, he was saying something how he was "researching teenage fraud" and that this "wasn't the only place he posted this message".

There is nothing to get scared about. This post is not just about the poofed thread but a good reminder in general as its way too easy to get caught up in the fun and comfort you feel when you are talking to friends online and disclose information you probably shouldn't. It's also a reminder that in the online community as well as in real life - not everyone is what they say they are, so keep that in mind.

Things to always watch out for:

Watch out for people that you only just met that want to know too much personal information and want to take conversations private. Don't let your guard down if the person gives you a sob story - illness, broken heart, etc to try to loosen your guard

Watch out for people that you don't know that ask you for your picture or for any personal information like where you live, what school you go to.

Watch out for anyone anxious to "meet up" with you in real life - talk to your parents about this

Watch out for anyone that says they are doing a study, report or thesis about something and want you to participate unless you have been previously informed by the admin of the board you are on that this person has permission to do so. Don't fall for someone saying "The moderators said it was okay". Unless you hear it from us, it's not okay

Watch out for any surveys or tests that get you to disclose personal information. I'm not saying that the person that posts these are trying to do you harm, but you never know who is reading these threads that can gather enough information about you to know your last name and street address

If you guys have any other warnings you want to pass on, please do! It would be great if we can all help each other out in staying safe. :)

There was a thread basically saying the same thing that Lauri said. It was from some guy who was studying the topic.
He made sure to warn the girls about how they never know who the males really are, but never extended the warning to the guys. :rolleyes2

He mentioned two of our posters (female) and that they were part of an "experiment" or something.

IDK, he was saying something how he was "researching teenage fraud" and that this "wasn't the only place he posted this message".

I have a feeling that this guy was really just spamming. I don't think he was legit and just wanted to cause trouble instead.

Just curious. How do you explain the DIS facebook? That's a huge list of people with their last names and all kinds of personal information showing.

I think that if they have a facebook and are putting their name out there, its their decision.

Well, we can't control what people do outside of the DIS, and aren't the people on there mainly over the age of 18? Even if you are dead set and determined to post personal information on the DIS, I can't stop you. I can try to explain to you that deleting it is for your own safety, but if you put info in your signature or profile, that's not up to me to delete. But I think we can agree that if there are 14, 15, 16 yr olds posting information that could be used to harm them, it's best we try to make sure they realize why it may not be a good idea, right?

And about the poofed thread, as with any threads posted by people with the sole reason to spam, troll or incite trouble on the boards, it gets deleted

Thank you for posting this, Lauri! It's always better to be safe than sorry!

Yeah, I wont join the DIS facebook group. I'm just not comfortable with it.
