OK, I never watched this show because I thought the characters were annoying but I know it was a very popular show. The other day The View had the creator/writer on and they showed some clips. The two clips were from the same show and it was apparently supposed to be a very good episode. The first clip showed his wife berating Ray in front of his friends about not putting laundry in the hamper. The second showed his wife berating Ray in front of his mother and then the mother slaps him. :confused3

Is this what the show was about? The wife and mother ganging up against Ray? I'm sorry, but I don't find that funny at all. I would never nag my husband in front of his friends or mother. And I certainly would never allow his mother to slap him.

Ray is a lazy husband who barely watchs the kids and does not work around the house. If I had to live with him (and across the street from his parents) I would be PO'd as well.

It's a comedy show! I think you're taking it too literally.

I've watch ELR as repeats on TBS and some of the shows are so incredibly funny. Sometimes comedy mirrors real life, and sometimes they exaggerate the situations to create the comedy.

I would never berate my husband, let alone in front of people. But there are situations that came up on ELR that I could relate to. The hamper being one of them.

You can't judge a show that ran for 8 years from two clips. I love this show.My son who is 31 and unmarried doesn't get it.Is it sophisticated comedy no,but what on TV is anymore?

Beth I hate that show. It is awful. The one that got me was when the wife tricked the husband into thinking she got breast implants while he was out of town. When he acted interested and wanted to see them (like any red blooded american man) she got mad and threw a fit and then pulled socks out of her shirt. It was absolutely ridiculous and made the wife look like a total :guilty: . After that I was done with the show. I've only seen one other episode and it was quite funny actually but mostly centered around the brother screwing up the wedding invitations to an extreme. The brides reaction was priceless.

OMG....and the suitcase on the stairs/cheese one... :rotfl: I so completely related to that. OP...its called comedy. Watching 2 snippets of a show and getting a feel for it would be like someone watching 2 snippets from your life and making judgement of you. Its a really funny show most of the time and you should take a chance. If you don't like it at all, your only out 30 minutes.

There were situations like that (and like a previous poster said, Ray was in fact a very lazy guy) but there were also situations where Ray's mom sort of coddled Ray and his wife was seen as the bad guy... Like when he thought he was catching a cold and his mom rushed him up to bed and then made chicken soup, basically thought he should be waited on hand and foot. Ray's wife however saw through his act, and didn't want to coddle him the way his mom did.

Also the wife was sometimes looked down upon by Ray's mom in terms of her homemaking abilities, lack of cooking skills, etc. Sometimes it was the quirky behavior of the parents themselves that Ray, his wife and his brother would sort of laugh about.

I thought the show was funny!

Hehe. Don't let a suitcase full of cheese be your giant spoon. I love that show! Watch it a couple times, it's hilarious.

I have not watched a single episode of "Sex in the City", but think that it is appalling.

IMO Everybody Loves Raymond is one of the greatest sitcoms EVER!

Its about a dysfunctional (many would say regular) family. It was produced, written, acted and directed to perfection. Raymonds parents are by no way likeable people, and you would NOT want them to live near you (in real life). Rays wife Debra, was the 'outsider' dealing with her in-laws as best as possible (they lived right across the street from each other)

Unless you watched it you will never know what you are missing! And I have to say you are missing something but not watching it!

:lmao: :rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl2: :lmao:

As you can see by my siggy I am a HUGE ELR FAN! ELR is a very funny positive show! Dont let those clips you saw fool you.

:thumbsup2

So true. The show is more than just Deborah berating Ray. There are priceless scenes with Marie that are just hilarious! Some of my favorites are between the Barone brothers, and Robert just cracks me up!

I understand it was only two clips of the show. But it was two clips that the creator chose to show; I can only assume that they were typical to the show. If that's his idea of comedy, I just don't get it. I'll take Seinfeld anyday.

ITA!!! :thumbsup2 I love this show!!!

The PMS episode is one of my favorites.

Debra: If I have PMS, and I'm not saying I do, is that how you help me? By tape recording me? Telling me I have PMS? That doesn't help me Ray, THAT DOESN'T HELP ME!!!
Ray: Well WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO?! SHOW ME WHAT TO DO! JUST DRAW IT OUT!
Debra: Have you ever thought about giving me a hug?
Ray: ....A HUG?!
Debra: Yeah, a hug. Did you ever think about huggin' me, ya jerk?
Ray: Well it's pretty hard to hug someone who's trying to kill you!
Debra: Well it never even occured to you, you've never even tried it before!
Ray: Well LOOK, THIS is not huggable! This is not Debra! This is the woman who shows up once a month to rip into me like a monkey on a cupcake!

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I think this show is really funny. I didn't watch it until it started on TBS. Marie reminds me of DH's grandmother. So funny. DH does get quite angry at Debra; sometimes she is just irrational.

I have never watched Seinfeld either, the only clip I have seen was about a contest to see who can go longest without touching ones self.

Must be what the show is always about...
