ESTA query

We're not going until June but DS is going next month to LA with his college. Apparently they're doing a group ESTA.

I was going to do new ones for all of us after his visit or would his still be valid?
In all honesty for $14 I'd sooner get us all new ones but I was just curious to know the answer.

ESTAs are for individuals only, not group

you can group your ESTAs for easier management, but there is no such thing as a "group ESTA"
your DS will have his own (you'll be able to retreive it with the passport number and DOB + name) and it will be valid for 2 years. They say "group" because they'll do it as a batch

just retreive his ESTA to have his approval number as a reference, then you'll be sure and reassured that you don't need one for him when you do yours
