Well, that's not completely true (about them working the same way) - Minolta changed their mount in 1985 and Sony certainly doesn't officially support mounting such lenses on their DSLRs. They're more like Canon - they would like you to forget using the old manual focus lenses on your DSLR.
True...I should have mentioned an adapter is necessary for any pre-85 manual Minolta lenses. All the AF ones work - but the manual ones require an adapter, and are not officially supported. Also, there were a few cameras in Sony's line that dropped the 'release w/o lens' function that made the camera incapable of metering in A mode...fortunately, their last 5 models have restored that capability for those who use the old lenses. Most of us just enjoy the large Maxxum collection of lenses - though the NEX folks seem to be experimenting a lot with manual lenses since that camera can accept almost infinite adapters for almost any brand and type of manual lens.
