I am having so much difficulties in my stupid math class. I have a word problem to solve and am doing it.. but come up with 3 different answers each time! I have no clue where I am going with this. I remember when I was younger this was easy. Why is it hard now!??!! AHHH

I spend money at the mall..
1/21 on coffee
1/8 of remaining money on socks
1/5 of remaining money on a CD
2/7 of remaining money on a shirt
3/4 of remaining money on lunch
Come home with $10.00

How much money did I originally have?

How is it possible that everytime I check my work I will get a different answer?

Vent over.. Sorry

This is the whole problem? There is no more data? What exactly is the question to be answered?

Are you sure all of your fractions are right? As of right now, they add up to more than 1, which makes the question impossible to answer (she'd have spent more money than she started with).

the answer is: You used a credit card, cause otherwise you spent 141% of your cash and still came home with $10 (which would be impressive) ;)

Are the fractions supposed to be off what you have left?

In other words, you start with, $21 (making up a number). You spend 1/21, leaving you with $20. You spend 1/8 of that, leaving you with $17.50. Then you spend 1/5 of that....

If so, just work backwards.

That's what I came up with too.

wrote it the wrong way.. i edited it up above. and I have worked backwards. I guess I am just confused lol

End with $10.
Before lunch, had $40.
Before shirt had $56.
Before CD had $70.
Before socks had $80.
Before coffee had $84.

So, you started with $84.

Of course, I've pretty much made up a question from what you gave us (and may have made a math error).

$10 left, which is 25% of what you had before getting coffee... so determine what the pre-coffee total was first.

then take the pre-coffee total, and determine how much you had before spending 29% on a shirt to get a pre-shirt total... etc

1/21 on coffee
1/8 of remaining money on socks
1/5 of remaining money on a CD
2/7 of remaining money on a shirt
3/4 of remaining money on lunch
Come home with $10.00

Money left 10 = 1/4 * 5/7 * 4/5 * 7/8 * 20/21 of X

10 = 2800/23520 * X

X = 84

I now am seeing my mistake! thanks for your help guys! I can't believe that I did not realize this before. :D
