Elderly parents going to NYC for US Open tennis tournament. Any tips?

I would think both Grand Central and Penn Station LIRR trains stop at Citi Field/ Open as long as it is Port Washington line.

Oh, many of the LIRR trains do not pass Willets only trains on Port Washington line do.
and Great neck trains(which are on the Part Washington Line) often skip stop, though I think they might add it during tourney. Both Grand Central and Penn Station have trains on Port Washington line now.
I would go with subway too. Cheaper and quicker most of the time. Subways take credit card with chip now so need get a metro card. Though I think many feel more comfortable using metro card than whipping out credit card all the time. Every 7 train stops there. It might not again for half hour, but it will stop there.

One location you might want to consider is Long Island City. Its between Open site and City on the 7 line. Depending where hotel is it might be cheaper, safer, and if they are getting out late probably 20 minutes quicker back to hotel.
But other people would know better than I. Plus Long Island City has amazing view of the City itslelf.

Thank you everyone for such great advice! I will look into all of the hotel options suggested and transportation options. Also, thanks for all of the tips about the heat and how to handle it. They are definitely used to hot and humid weather but are not usually out all day in it watching tennis so I am not sure how overheated they would get.

I would also recommend they stay somewhere on the 7 Line for easy access. They could also take the LIRR from Grand Central or Penn Station. Either way, there are plenty of hotels and restaurants in those areas.

The other option would be staying in Queens and using busses, cabs, or walking to get around. I assume any hotel within walking distance to the tournament will be insanely expensive that week, but it's worth checking.

I don't think there are many hotels in walking distance. Center is in Flushing Meadow Park and its pretty big and not really walker friendly.
