Expedition Everest™Challenge presented by Champion

IMPORTANT EVENT UPDATE - 9.26.09
Attention Expedition Everest™ Challenge participants:

Due to inclement weather during Saturday evening's event, race officials were required to close the course and some participants were unable to complete the entire race. All participants who started are entitled to receive the finisher medal. If you did not pick up your medal in the finish area, please email wdw.sports.marathon.endurance@disneysports.com and include your name and race bib number and we will mail your medal to the address on your registration record. If neither member of your team received a medal please include both team members' names in the email. If you provided your name and address to event staff in the finish area Saturday night, then you do not need to email this information again.

If you were not able to finish the race and you are registered for Disney's Race for the Taste 10K on October 11, you will still be eligible to receive your Fall Race Series Challenge medal upon completion of that race.

Clue answers will be posted after Monday, September 28 for those guests that were unable to verify their clues at the race on Saturday.

Limited results will be posted as they become available.

The rain started about an hour into the race. By the time I left 30-40 minutes later, there were areas where the water was 6 inches deep. I really felt sorry for the people manning the tables, the cast members cheering people on and the photographers. It was as I was exiting the park that I saw lightening and the count was rather close. I figured they'd shut the race down.

Hope those who weren't able to finish still got the medal since it wasn't their fault they couldn't finish.

Oh no! That's terrible. I've never done EEC, but I know it's a fun even that many look forward to every year, and to not finish due to weather must really, well, suck!

I hope everyone, finisher or not, had a wonderful time!

Sorry for this really long review of the race...my husband and I made the best of a bad situation, but I have friends who might never run another Disney race because of the way this one was handled.

We were in wave 9 (ie: started 45 minutes after "official" start) and were walking at exactly a 16 minute mile pace, at least at the beginning. We made it to ~ the 1.5 mile mark when it started to torrentially downpour. He's not a fan of getting wet in the parks (he whines at the little bit of water that gets sprayed on you at the 3d shows!:rotfl:) so I was quite proud of him for laughing and trudging along with me, through water that sometimes came up nearly to my knees...though we were lucky if we were going 19 minute/mile once we were weighed down with 30 pounds of rain and couldn't see the path in front of us!

I was actually stunned when I got to the obstacle course and it was still open - I just assumed they'd have people walk around (because it was wet and slippery) but I guess they wanted to give people the chance to do it if they wanted. My bigger issue is, because the torrential rains had been going on for so long, there were only a few volunteers left out on the obstacle course, so if something HAD happened, it would have been bad. I thought it was really romantic holding DH's hand while slowly walking across the balance beams and trying to make sure neither one of us fell, though!

As soon as we were done with the obstacle course (probably somewhere right around 9) things fell apart with the race. It started to lightning so they called it off right as we crossed the obstacle course finish, but they didn't tell us they had called it off. They told us we couldn't pick up our scavenger hunt books at the tent in the parking lot (because the tent was metal) so we should all walk into the park as quickly as we could (to be safer there?) and then walk to camp minnie mickey and they would hand out the scavenger hunt books when we got there. There was a group of about 30 of us that wandered around, looking for any volunteers anywhere, and we didn't find a single one between the parking lot and camp minnie mickey. (I had friends that were in a later wave, and instead of finishing the 5k they were just diverted directly to dinoland to pick up their medal - it was only the people that were out in the parking lot when the race got cancelled that had this confusion)

When we got to camp minnie mickey, there were no volunteers there and (obviously) no books - but another couple nearby handed me one so my husband and I continued doing the clues, still thinking they were scoring them at the end. It was pouring so hard that I couldn't really even tell which direction I was facing, let alone where I was going, but we enjoyed the scavenger hunt anyways - the clues were fun and the torrential rain turned it into a real adventure

When we got to the end, they handed us our medals - but since they had been out in the rain all night, and the words on the lanyard part of the medal were just stickers, the stickers were falling apart and off the lanyard. (The medal itself is cool, I'm just really bummed about the words not being on the lanyard anymore! When we asked if we could get a different one that wasn't ruined, they said they were all the same way because they had all been out in the rain)

Then we had a debacle of trying to get our scavenger hunt clues scored - first they said the race had been cancelled so they weren't scoring at all, then the dj announced that you could pick up books and do the scavenger hunt and get your clues scored when you were done, but no one could explain where to get them scored, and after about a half an hour it was finally announced that no, the race was officially cancelled and you couldn't get a score. After doing a 5k, an obstacle course, and another few k through the park, I would have preferred someone stop and get a correct answer as to what was going on rather than make up answers and make me walk all around the place trying to find something that didn't exist.

When we picked up our bags that we had shipped to the end of the race, everything inside them was DRENCHED. I don't really get how this happened. I had stuff inside my wallet, inside my purse, inside a sealed bag, inside THEIR mostly sealed plastic bag, and it was still soaked. Friends had electronic equipment (blackberries, ipods, etc) that were in there that no longer work. It looked like Disney left the bags sitting out in the torrential downpour instead of keeping them in whatever truck they used to ship them over to the race.

I heard horror stories from spectators of being told (while they were out in the parking lot near the obstacle course waiting for their family to run by) that the race and party was cancelled and that everyone had to get on the buses and go back to their hotels, so they did (the party was NOT cancelled - just some of the rides were shut down until the storm passed), wasting all the money they spent on the tickets.

My biggest problem with the race was what appeared to be a lack of a contingency plan for what they were going to do if they had to cancel the race in the middle of it due to inclement weather and how that would affect the people at the various stages of the race.
The bigger problem was that, whether or not they had a contingency plan (and I don't know the answer to that but my guess is no based on the way things were handled), communication was truly AWFUL. I would say it was close to non-existent. It was hard to find anyone who actually knew what was going on - I didn't expect the volunteers to, but I did expect them to know who was near them that was "in charge" of their area and could answer my questions, rather than the volunteers making up answers. I couldn't blame them for that, though, since most of the time it didn't look like there was anyone "official" nearby, and after asking somewhere near 30 people if anyone had a headset and could call to get information (no one had a headset), I finally gave up.

I will say that the volunteers who stayed out on the course through the torrential rain were AWESOME. I don't know if I would have stayed at my post (or anywhere outside) if I wasn't in the race, so I really can't blame them. I also loved the idea of the race (though I think it would work better if they got rid of the obstacle course and shortened the time between waves).

They also should have had some sort of official vehicle (even if it was just the "sweep car"!) ride the whole race circuit and give people actual, legitimate instructions and, if possible, transport people to where they were supposed to go.

I really think Disney should give people some sort of discount on future races that did this one - I don't expect them to control the weather, honest I don't! - but I heard so many horror stories after the race about how completely underprepared they were for this, and how awful the experience was, and even with me trying to keep a positive outlook about the whole thing, I'm not sure I'll pay this much money to run a race again.

I still don't know if I "finished" or not - we did the 5K - and obstacle course, but there was no-one to score our clues? I was told we would not get any deductions but now wonder if i will get a final score/total? This was my first race and It certianly did seem like chaos.
I was told that the race was called and the park was closing due to weather and so my teammate and I left. I didnt realize until reading this that the party did go on. At teh finish we were clearly told they had just received word the park was closing.

Disney is on a roll this month. THe DL 1/2 had many runners medlas(including mine) fall apart. Mine is a jig saw puzzle

I have been fighting with Disney for 3+ weeks. They don't have any answer when/if the will replace the medal. They even wanted me to pay to ship my defective medal back at my cost before even considering replacing mine. Disney now says they don't have any replacement medals for all the runners with issues and have to wait for them to come from China. Only $120 lost!

It might be easier to just get a couple of gold O-rings, or whatever they care called, and get the bottom reattached. I would highly recommend NOT getting the O-rings from NASA though.

When we got to the end, they handed us our medals - but since they had been out in the rain all night, and the words on the lanyard part of the medal were just stickers, the stickers were falling apart and off the lanyard. Yep, mine's the same way. There's a dark section where each of the letters were but 1/2 of them washed away.

When we picked up our bags that we had shipped to the end of the race, everything inside them was DRENCHED. I don't really get how this happened. The bags were in a pile next to the store you pass near when exiting from Dinosaur. The bags were not covered.

That totally sucks with EE5K being cancelled! I'm really bummed for all of you. Sounds like things were handled poorly (poor people with their phones and such! what a pain)

Robert on a side note, this is me trying to pull up old old memories but I think someone on your website had an experience with a broken ring on their medal from DL 2008. I seem to recall the person was on the Haunted Mansion ride and the bar came down and caught the medal. I don't recall who it was but I think they either were directed to where to find the rings or sent replacements? I hope you and others are able to get this fixed. Good luck!!!!

I was in wave 9 also (sporting the 3 Stooges Motorcycle club T-shirt) and had the exact some problem of not getting info on what/where to go after the rain started. I can't remember seeing it rain so hard.

Lack of communication was so bad my father got lost on the course and could not finish with my mother (my mother and ran ahead).

I never even got the clues for the scavanger hunt.

It was completely awful once it starting raining. I feel so sorry for all the people who checked bags and had their items soaked/ruined because Disney didn't protect them better, or were just a few yards away from the finish of the 5K and were told they weren't allowed to finish. Luckily, I was in Wave 2 and was able to finish and just pretty much watch everything unfold. They should have had a much better plan, no sorry wrong wording, they should HAVE HAD a plan for when "the rain rain rain came down down down", it was handled very poorly and, from what I saw and heard, left alot of people with a bad taste in their mouths.

This was my first race as well. I had a great time and feel fortunate to have been in wave 4 so I had a chance to finish the race and the obstacle course prior to the rain. Just as we were receiving our books and wave 14 were leaving the rain began. I felt so sorry for them. Hopefully no one got injured running on those slippery surfaces. My teammate and I actually had a great time doing the course in the rain. You get to the point where you can't get any wetter! They stopped checking the answers literally right in front of us because of lightening, so we didn't get to turn our books in to be official. I am not sure what happened to the party there was no one there to say. All we wanted to do was to ride EE and I assumed that never started back up. Overall we had a great time but I agree communication could have been much better. BTW I felt really bad for spectators that watched the race and entered for the after party. I would love to hear what they had going on besides a few counter service restaurants. That would really stink to spend $29 and not get anything out of it. I saw a few WISH shirts out there and felt in great company!

We were able to finish all three parts of the race, but didn't get to turn in our passports. It actually was pretty comical wading through the "lakes" - and we figured we couldn't get any wetter. I thought they should have gotten us off the course sooner with all the lightning, though. We were still doing the scavenger hunt after they had closed all the other parts of the race. :confused3

We were also able to ride Dinosaur - it was the only ride running around 10pm. After that, we went over to Everest to see if they were going to open it up. It was closed at the time, but they opened it again about 5 minutes later. Of course, right after we heard people screaming on the ride, we saw a huge bolt of lightning and heard the rumble... I'm so glad we weren't on there! :scared1:

All in all, it was fun. However, the race was waaaaaaaay overpriced, and there really isn't an excuse for not having a plan in place for the safety of the participants. I LOVE the medal, though, and I loved seeing the WISH shirts during the race!!! :thumbsup2

Wow, I'm so sorry to hear about the horrible experience of those in the later corrals. I did the race by myself which meant I was in wave 1 and I was lucky that it didn't start raining until after I finished. I had no idea about all the confusion and mis-communication until I read figment82's report. From my point-of-view, I was impressed with how they tried to keep everything going despite the rain.

They did shut down Expedition Everest for awhile, but eventually it started running again. I think the way it works is that if there's lightning, they shut down the ride. They have to wait 15 minutes with no lightning in order to start up again. First they send out a test ride with a cast member to make sure it's working okay. Then they can start letting guests ride. But if there's any sign of lightning at all, then the whole process starts over again. We got our hopes up once when the test ride went out, but then we heard thunder and they shut down again.

I was in the queue area for over an hour waiting. A lot of people gave up and left, but I wanted to get at least one ride in and I didn't have anything else to do. I heard that Dinosaur was still open since it's an indoor attraction, but I'm not a fan of the ride. I think it was about 10/10:30 when Expedition Everest finally started back up again and I was in the second set of cars. From what I could tell, it stayed open the rest of the night.

WOW! I didn't realize what a screw up this was. I was in wave 1 and was already on my scavenger hunt clues when it started to rain. Torrential downpour didn't come until I was at Everest getting my final clue, so the majority of my rain was the walk back to the car.

This was my first race. I would have been devastated if I didn't get to finish. So I can empathize with all of you who didn't. My medal fell apart with the letters too (was already falling off when I got to Earl of Sandwich right after the race). But I'm happy with the medal itself. Also, I like that they posted the split time this year. I was much slower on the 5K than I have been training at home b/c of heat and humidity, but I made up some time on the scavenger hunt. So all in all I'm happy.

Glad I didn't check any items and just gave them to my family to keep in the car. I gave away my bracelet to a woman who was there watching her kids run as a team. Hope they got to finish and perhaps got to enjoy some of the party. It was great to see her face.

All in all, I'm glad I did it. I won't do it again in June. September heat was enough, I can't imagine doing this event in June. :scared1:

Looked and Looked for Wish shirts and saw nothing. I was very sad. I so wanted to cheer people on while I was scavenging and walking back to the parking lot. I cheered for the non wishers anyway. But still it would have been nice to have cheered for a wisher.

I had a great time doing EE even if it did get rained out. :]
I was in wave 4, and my partner was my mom. She told me to go on with out her, but I waited in front of the Obstacle course for a long time and she never showed up. She was having bad problems with her hips, and we finally met in the in front of the AK entrance where they told us we could either do the scavenger hunt, or just go on to dinoland, we picked the latter :].
We got drenched, but had a great time anyway! I hate that it's going to be in JUNE next year though!

Oh, I don't want to give the wrong impression - my husband and I had a pretty great time as well, but that's cause we're pretty easy-going people! I really was in the race just to finish. I knew I was going to be pushing it just to keep the pace, which is why I was happy I was in wave 9 and had some lee-way...so my husband, who can go MUCH faster, agreed to walk the entire thing with me and cheer me on, even though he could have been running circles around me. It was a great adventure for both of us to be running the 5k in the torrential rain; we kept each other going through some really nasty terrain. Walking the balance beam together, hand-in-hand, when I couldn't see more than a few inches in front of my face was one of my favorite "team building" things I've ever done with him (and in my crazy way, I found it to be very romantic ;))

I was more upset for my friend that's had health (overweight) issues for a long time and totally shifted her life around in the past 8 weeks, lost 26 pounds, and was preparing to run this race as a reward/challenge for all that she's accomplished - she's the one whose blackberry got wrecked and had a massive amount of confusion, and I'm afraid it might have discouraged her in her goals!

I probably won't spend $100 to run this race in June, because I was there June 12th last year and it was HOT...but I'm hoping disney will have learned from the issues and fixed the problems by next year anyways!

Congrats to everyone who was able to finish!

Good morning everyone: I'm writing a blog up on this event for the site, and I'd love to include some of your perspectives if that's OK.
