EEC Cancelled

wdwprncess77- our little group were the ones wearing the matching Mickey tie-dye (green and brown) shirts. You had to of seen us. It's funny we tried to make the Mickey in the center of the shirts lime green to help identify us- but it came out a bit more forest green :)

I was very impressed with the creativity of the shirts. People really had fun with the theme and went all out with professional looking matching team shirts.

I hope they still post the race pictures....

DH & I were also in wave 8. (ChocoKat, I think I saw you.) Because he can run longer than I can before he starts to walk, we agreed that we would meet up after the race. We each took our cell phones so that we could call each other. Bad idea! DH had his Blackberry in his pocket and it got soaked. It no longer worked after the race, so yesterday he picked up a new phone. (Thank goodness for phone insurance!) I had my iPhone in my runner's pack which was around my waist and under my bib. I think that between the bib and the pack it was protected because it still worked even after the downpour!

I was about halfway thru the course when the sky opened up. DH was waiting for me at the finish and he said "I'm not going to do the obstacle course." I told him that if he didn't do it he wouldn't get the medal. Now he thought the compass was really cool, so we walked thru most of the course. The only one we actually did was the rope climb. DH thought the balance beams looked like a good way to break a leg! Then he said "I'm not doing the scavenger hunt." Again, I reminded him that he would have to do it to get the medal. So we picked up our books and pens and went into the AK. As we were walking into the AK, we saw lightening for the first time. No one ever told us that the race had been called, so we slogged thru the water and went to every location. When we got to Everest, the volunteer there just gave us the answer because the power had gone out and there was no longer a light on the sign that you were supposed to read for the clue!

We went to Dinoland, got our medals, and went back to the resort. DH said he would do it again, but not next year. Here's hoping that by 2011, Disney will move it back to the fall.

I'm curious about these medals with the lanyard/ribbon with stickers on it that peeled off in the rain...?? Does anyone have a photo? I am looking at my medal from last year's EEC and the ribbon has what appears to be high-quality printing on a nice colored fabric. Why did they cheapen it??? And if they did indeed cheapen those medals... another huge bummer! Booo.

:sunny:

Being one of the earlier finishers is probably the only reason I still have some lettering.

I remember a bunch of tie dye shirts. Hmmmmmm.....probably saw you. I was not wearing anything very interesting. maroon tank top and tan capri running pants.

I am really looking forward to the pictures as well. I brought my camera for my mom to take pictures when i started and ran through the 5k end and obstacle course. But the battery died with just a picture of the starting gate. So I'm really counting on ASI for a pic of me somewhere.

Hey everyone, I just had a new blog published recapping last weekend's Expedition Everest Challenge. Thanks for your help everyone. Also, if I can ask a favor. I intend to send the link to my contacts at the Disney Endurance Series. If you leave comments at the bottom of the blog, Disney will be able to see them as well. It may be a way to provide some feedback to them if you're interested. You just need to sign in to the blog with your DIS username and password.

Great blog!!

It's funny, I mentioned the tie-dye shirts our group wore and you actually have a photo of my daughter and her friend on your blog. They are the ones climbing over the rope challenge. They are both seniors in high school. Small world after all....

That was an official Disney photo they sent me. I thought the tie-dyed shirts were awesome. Glad to know they were DISers.

I just saw the blog and was shocked to see my name. I've been keeping it low key until now, but I'm Lisa - the women's winner from last year. I'm guessing the Disney folks must have let you know I was there?

I didn't do a very good job defending my title :guilty:, but it gives me something to work toward for next year.

Wow, that is so cool Lisa. I wish I would have known that you were hungrygreenhippo. I would have definitely put in my article that you were a DISer and a WISHer. Yes, in Disney's press release leading up to the race they said you were returning and had your time. Thanks for letting me know, and thanks for adding your thoughts and experience to the blog.

It is the same as last years medal with the exception of a different color lanyard.

So, this is my first posting on the DIS boards. My wife is an avid DISer, and I make fun of her all the time for the hours of "research" that she does before one of our trips.

We just returned from my 12th trip to Walt Disney World, where we were able to celebrate our 8th wedding anniversary, without the kids! It was a great and romantic week. My wife is truly my best friend!

On this trip, we did something very new - we ran the Everest 5K. Now, we're both Pooh size people, and my wife has done many 5Ks before. This was my first, and I was a bit nervous. But the whole experience was just AWESOME!

We were in wave 9. Now, the wait to start was excruciating, but the atmosphere was fun, and encouraging. Once we got started, we did okay. We maintained about a 15 min/mile pace, up to the 2nd mile. At mile two, the light rain just turned into monsoon! The extra water weight just slowed us down, and we were very cognizant of running and slipping on the course! We finished the 5K after the "swim" through the parking lot, and did the obstacle course.

As we completed the last obstacle, the course staff told us that the course was shutting down. When I asked if the Scavenger Hunt was closed as well, he said he didn't know, and we should check at the tent. No problem, because we were there together, cheering each other on. Got to the Scavenger Hunt tent, and they gave us the bag with the passport and pens, and sent us into the park. Once we got to the Discovery Island area was the first time that someone said to us that the whole course had been shut down, and they directed us over to Dinoland. It was at Dinoland that we finally found some chaos, but finally got our medals, and some food, and headed back to our hotel.

Could things have been done better? Maybe. But, how can you prepare for this any better? Things always look better in hindsight. It would really have been nice to have someone sitting in Dinoland with a bullhorn announcing that they weren't scoring passports and where to go for a medal. Would I want to be that person holding a bullhorn in a lightning storm? It would have been nice to have my belongings dry. But, didn't they say not to "check" expensive electronic items? I didn't. In fact, I carried my iPod in my hand - it doesn't work anymore! Who's to blame? Me.

They could have called it earlier than they did - and maybe the last wave wouldn't have had the chance to even start. We should be glad that no one got hurt! With 3500 people there, there were a lot more things that could go wrong other than the letters coming off of the medals.

Look, I can't even begin to criticize Disney on any point of this event. It rained so much, so quickly, that I probably wouldn't even had heard it over the loud speakers. All I know, is that every cast member, every volunteer, everyone that was out in the rain, did nothing but cheer me on. These people are working there for minimum wage, and yet they sat in the rain, completely soaked like me, or in a poncho, or huddled under the corner of a hut, cheering me on. Making sure that I did my best.

I can't even begin to criticize Disney because, in the end, no matter how much rain there was, no matter how poor the communication was, no matter that the little letters fell off the ribbon of my medal - no matter anything, I know that I completed my first 5K, and I did it with my best friend in the world, my wife. And that is my favorite Disney Magic ever!!!!:wizard:

Yay! Just sent out for new lanyards for our medals. That really makes me feel much better. I know it is silly, but I worked very hard to get it :rotfl:

Wow, I cannot believe how crazy it got for the later waves. I too, was in wave 1 and I had a blast!!! I actually got a huge cut in my finger which delay me and I was doing the scavenger hunt in the rain but I still had no idea they were closing the 5K course down... I knew they closed up KRR and EE for a while which they time to time during crappy weather anyway but I didn't even know if really effected the race itself.

BUT, with that said I had a wonderful time! I honestly felt it was completely worth it! The only thing I was really pissed about was the fact that my mom waited at AKL for a ride over to the after party for 45 minutes before the bus arrived... a bunch of BS imo, I paid $30 for her to go to the after party with being told that there would be transportation to/from AKL for the after party beginning at 8:15PM... did they mean 9:15PM or something? Ridiculous!

Here are some pictures of my medal with the white lettering gone. It all peeled of when it got wet and I wore it around :(

Even without the rain, they would have had KRR open which would have gotten the lanyards wet so you'd think they would be made to survive getting wet a little bit?

Does anyone know if they are going to post the results like they did last year? Men - 4 items, Women - 4 items, etc.

I know the results (times) are posted. I was just wondering if they are going to break it down into categories like they did last year. I know not everyone didn't get to finish the race but I would still like to see how I placed.
