ebay/paypal question

I bought something on ebay last week, came with free shipping. When I went to check out and pay, something happened on the shipping page---even though I declined the extra $5. insurance fee (which is way high for the value of the item) somehow it was added in to the paypal total. It wasn't possible to go back to the previous page with the insurance option.

So, waited a couple of days to see if payment page would reset. It did not. Yesterday I contacted the seller via ebay, told him the problem and asked if he could reset the page. Had a reply back today. Seller says he doesn't want to reset the page due to possibility of the item going back into inventory or something like that (he is a power seller with an online store). Told me to pay the amount showing and ask for refund from paypal.

Is this kosher? Will it work? Or will ebay blow me off and side with the seller saying I asked for the extra insurance? Or is this a normal way for things to take place with ebay/paypal?

Should I ask for something, like a statement that I am declining insurance and seller agrees to refund the $5? WWYD??? I am nearing the end of the payment time (10 days) and need to make a decision.

Thanks!!

The thing with eBay and PayPal is they don't see things logically, complaining does very little good the majority of the time.

What Id do is look at the auctions fine print, make sure that insurance is not required. Some sellers require you to purchase it and some give you the choice. One thing you could do is manually send the seller a payment. Just make sure if you do that to include all the information about the listing and send them a note on eBay telling them what you done.

If insurance is not required and they are trying to make you buy it just dont pay for the item and move on. If they file a non paying bidder against you, all you will have to do is tell eBay they changed the price after the auction and you will be okay.

I have had similar things were it charged me shipping and it was supposed to be free when ever a power seller was involved they just refunded me what was due to me w/o even asking w/in a few hours but since it is optional insurance i think you would pay and then tell the seller that you didn't select insurance but it charged you and to issue you a refund. it is only a couple clicks for him to issue you that 5$ partial refund.

I personally would not go ahead and overpay expecting the seller to make an adjustment later.

Instead I would wait until the system was adjusted to charge the correct amount.

Unless I really wanted the item more quickly.
