I would really like to get a timer for my crock pot but I haven't been able to find one. Where did you all get yours and what area of the store did you find it in?

Thank you!

We had one a long time ago. I think we got it around the lamp department in the Home Depot or Walmart....maybe other household electronics.

I got mine at walmart near the home repair type stuff. It was sort of near the paints, one aisle over from Fireplace accessories (I have no idea why I know that!) It was the same aisle with extension cords and power strips. I wanted to plug my bread maker into it too but the timer I bought is only for a 2 prong appliance plug and my breadmaker has a 3 prong plug.:confused3

My family is vegan. So far this week we've had:

Monday - a main-dish salad with added veggies and chickpeas (I was recovering from having a tooth pulled and didn't feel much like cooking).

Tuesday - I made a mushroom-onion gravy (from scratch) and served it over a vegan burger patty and steamed broccoli. (It was very tasty.)

Tonight (Wed) - I made Tofu Saag, which is a vegan variation on the Indian dish made with paneer cheese. It's cubed tofu marinated in a curry sauce, and baked in the oven. While it is baking, you cook chopped onions, chopped spinach and peas with ginger, garlic, curry, cumin and coconut milk, then add the tofu once it's done and cook all together for a few more minutes. Served this with a green salad. Very delicious!

Tomorrow it's my son's turn to cook.

I need to ask for some help!

I need some sandwich ideas. On Tuesday nights I have class until 7 and mom gets home from work about 6:40ish. So, we don't really have time (or energy) to "cook" something. We have been doing some frozen meals, but I am already tired of them. Sandwiches are a good option, but I just am not creative enough with them!

BLTs (cook extra bacon on a different day and freeze til needed. Let it thaw in the fridge on the day you make BLTs)

Egg salad

Chicken salad (Roast a whole chicken, save the breasts for sandwiches)

Grilled cheese and soup

Baked ham (bake a ham on a different day, freeze slices in sandwich portions. Thaw in fridge. My daughter likes this in pitas)

*Grilled Cheese (with or without: Bacon, Tomato, salami, ham)
*Turkey/cheese/tomato
*Ham and Cheese
*Tuna or Tuna melt (grilled with cheese on it)
*meatball subs with melted cheese
*French dips (I use deli roast beef, provolone cheese on a sub roll and beef consomme heated up to dip it in, stick the sandwich in the broiler to melt the cheese)
*Italian Subs: ham, pepperoni, cappicola, provolone, lettuce, tomato, onion and oil/vinegar
*wraps, I like hummus turkey tomato and spinach on a tortilla, wrap it up and slice
*sliced chicken (or leftover rotisserie chicken), blue cheese dressing, lettuce and buffalo sauce on a wrap
*chicken caeser wrap (chicken, romaine lettuce, shredded parmesan and caeser dressing)
*English muffin pizzas

First off I must say that I love this thread, why I never clicked on it before I don't know but I am glad I did today. I've only read the first few pages but look forward to reading more once my kids are in bed. I am a big planner when it comes to meals, with a family of 6 it's a must for me. I have 2 children who are pretty good eaters and will try anything I put on their plate and then I have 2 who are picky, my dh is a big meat eater and I love veggies, sometimes it's tough but I try to accomadate everyone. Also because of various sports my children play I am afraid I have been going the quick and easy route lately with dinners, I really hate it because I love to cook but sometimes there is just no time. We also usually do take out once a week at the most, my dh is the general manager of a restaurant so he brings dinner home every other week or so. I plan our meals out on Thursday nights and do my shopping on Fridays, I try to do only one shopping trip a week because even if I go in a store for 1 item mid week I end up spending $50 somehow:confused:. I end up spending probably about $200-$250 a week on food. Here's my menu for this past week.

Friday - Chick fil-a (oldest had a baseball game and dh was out of town)
Saturday - Spaghetti with homemade meatballs and sauce, salad and bread
Sunday - grilled london broil, risotto and asparagus
Monday - orange chicken, white rice and broccoli
Tuesday - breakfast for dinner, french toast, scrambled eggs and turkey bacon
Wednesday - tacos, spanish rice and beans
Thursday - roast beef, mashed potatoes, green beans and corn

I am like you hun... I can't go into a grocery store to pick up just one thing. For example, today I had to run to the store because I realized I had no frozen peas for the beef stew. Well, I walked out of the store $35 poorer! So I really do try to do all my shopping once a week otherwise who knows how much I will have spent by the end of the week.

flamingglobessigmund and scrapquitler, thank you both for the ideas. I will keep them in mind over the next few weeks so that I can have a "healthy" and delicious meal when I get home. I am just SO brain dead after my Stats class that the thought of doing anything but eating and sleeping is beyond me! That class is going to be the death of me!

BTW, I made Nancy's Easy Beef Stew recipe from her blog at http://nancysrecipes.wordpress.com/. REALLY REALLY good!

Hi All! I've been reading lots of posts on the Boards for the past few months but finally decided to jump in, because I have recently (that is, since we booked our "Belated-Christmastime-Disneymoon) become very motivated to save money and found out the grocery bill was the easiest place to do it-- and that the best way to save there was to PLAN!!!

Funny side-story just because, since this was a catalyst for menu-planning for me...
My husband and I got married August 09. He's 6'8" and can EAT- I graduated from law school in May 09 and was used to coming home and eating popcorn or chips for dinner most nights, so it was a huge adjustment to cook dinners e-v-e-r-y night. I used to cook once a week and have food for days! Anyway, I'm very type-A so I did the shopping just because I preferred it, but one night DH offered to go (remember, this was pre-menu-planning). I thought that would be great, maybe I should be less controlling anyway :thumbsup2 He came back about 45 minutes later and here's what he bought: 26 pounds of meat, and a pack of hot dog buns. :rotfl2: That's it, Nothing else, no sides, no produce, nothing!! In that 26 pounds was a 9-pound ham, two large pot roasts, two turkey breasts, and a pack of hot dogs (at least he got buns). 26 pounds of meat!!!! The ham is still sitting in our freezer because there's only two of us!

Now I plan out every day, sometimes doing two weeks worth of shopping at a time, and I try really, really hard to only spend $50/week on groceries. I plan the menus around what meat is on sale, and I use coupons.

All of that was a very long post to say that I'm so looking forward to changing up our usual menus using everyone else's ideas! Thanks for all of them so far!!!:goodvibes

Okay, here is my list of dinners for tonight through next Friday night. I really need to stay on target because I got my furlough day pay check and it is about $200 less than usual and my DH's job project ended a few weeks ago and he is only working a lower paid job until the next project. So here it is...

Tonight: Spaghetti w/meatsauce, broccoli and garlic bread;

Friday: Homemade Pizzas

Hope we make it. I have most of the ingrediants. I need a can of cranberries, green bell pepper, and pepperonis. That's it, except for milk and produce for next week. Hoping to get by on $50 for the week.!
