I was just email-invited to a cookie exchange with my old mommy's group. Let's see if your reactions are the same as mine

Please Bring: 4 dozen cookies and a nice big tray/plastic container to transport all your new cookies in!

Don't be too hard on her. I saw these exact instructions online when I was researching my swap. I bet she just copied and pasted someone elses instructions.

Wow - she probably should have read them first - or asked a bit of advice. I haven't said anything to her yet - figured she didn't mean to sound as bad as she did. I don't think she gotten any responses yet - I think we're all in a bit of shock! Aren't cookie exchanges supposed to be fun?

This is a recipe I got for Snickerdoodles off of Allrecipes.com This makes 10 dozen cookies. I also add in a bag or two of Heath Toffee Chips

INGREDIENTS (Nutrition)
4 cups shortening
6 cups white sugar
8 eggs
11 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon and 1 teaspoon baking soda
2 tablespoons and 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup white sugar
2 tablespoons and 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
In a large bowl, mix together the shortening and 1 1/2 cups of white sugar until smooth. Stir in the eggs one at a time, blending well after each. Combine the flour, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt; stir into the batter until blended.
Roll the dough into balls the size of small walnuts. Roll in a mixture of 2 tablespoons sugar and 2 teaspoons cinnamon. Place 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake in the preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes or until lightly browned, but still soft.

This is like way yummy and also from Allrecipes. I would use white chocolate chips instead of vanilla

Wow I'm glad my cookie exchange didn't have these rules. I think you should be able to make what ever you want some of the no bake cookies I think are the best and easiest to do if you have kids. I love to try different recipes that other people make and it doesn't matter what kind of cookie they are as long as I get to sample them. Good luck deciding what your going to make there are some really good recipes here, I can't wait to try them out this weekend.:bounce: Hopefully I have this much energy this weekend.

I make these for my DH's office cookie tray.

Got it from one of the Food Network shows. Can't remember which one.

Tube of sugar cookie slice and bake dough.
cup of chopped pistachios
cup of dried cherries.(I just use Craisens)

Open the dough, squish in the nuts and Craisens.
Wrap in Saran wrap in a log shape.
Refrigerate till chilled.
Slice and bake as directed for the Sugar Cookie.

You can really add whatever nut you prefer, or leave them out and just use the Craisens. Very festive looking and taste great.

I've seen instructions like the cookie swap thing before stating that the cookies must be made from flour, but I don't always agree with that. I get lots of requests for my rum balls and orange snowballs that you make with vanilla wafer crumbs, and they are rolled, but not baked. At least they are home-made!

I really do agree with the "no chocolate-chip cookies" thing. I just went to a cookie swap this past weekend and 4 people brought chocolate chip cookies. I wish that they had used a little originality...Toll house cookies are just ok, and not really special or "Holiday-like".

For another cookie exchange on Thursday morning, I just made something similar to the oreo cookie thing, but with Nutter butters, crushed, mixed and dipped in chocolate. It really is a bit more "candy like" but I think it will do. At least it is not chocolate chip! I hadn't ever done this before, but decided to give it a trial run. All 3 kids gave it a thumbs up.

While I don't agree with all the rules, we ask that there be no chocolate chip or peanut butter blossoms at our exchange. We all agreeded if we were going to do a christmas cookie swap, they should be christmas cookies, not everyday cookies. One of the first year a few people just make slice and bake choc chip and got some beautiful cookies. She even commented how impressed her guests would be at her baking skills. They were our skills :rotfl2: . That just left a bad taste for some of us. But with that said, if you really aren't a baker, we let them get away with the "everyday" cookies.

In the end it is all for the fun and fellowship.

PS if forgot to add, if they were making choc chip, we asked them to use the red and green chips. LOL

Will they kick you out if they don't think your chocolate chip cookies are different enough?

As Charlie Brown would say, "GOOD GRIEF!"

maybe everyone should email her back what they are bringing so there are no duplicates.

If you can do a no-bake, here's a good one

Faux Thin Mints

Melt semi sweet chocolate chips and add some peppermint extract to taste.
Dip Nilla Wafers and lay out on waxed paper.

Done!!:goodvibes

though these rules do seem crazy I think some sort of rules should be applied. I went to a cookie exchange a few years back and came home with horrible cookies. They were small, not decorated, and few of the same cookies. My family told me to go get my cookies back. LOL I didn't but I now attend a different exchange.

haven't been to one in several years but it does help when people email the hostess with the kinds they are going to make. i would love to do one this year but don't think i will have time this year. did print out several fudge recipes this morning so hoping to try those. ny non arrives tomorrow so we will be doing a lot of baking. i can't wait to make my spritz cookies. got a new cookie gun last year and haven't had time to use it yet.:santa:

I started this thread over on the Cooking Board: :woohoo:

Cookies from cake mixes! Also: BISCOTTI and Cookie BARS

The recipes are soooo easy as the ingredients for the dough part is pretty much premade. There are dozens of variations because you decide on your own add-ins.

It has now been made a permanent sticky on the Cooking Board. It gets about 200 hits every 2 days. :woohoo: I am really happy it's so useful to people. :cool1:

I think the cookie exchange rules could be ignored since the last instruction is you can go to a bakery and buy 4 doz. yummy cookies. I can just picture everyone showing up with cookies from the same bakery. LOL! Thanks all for the good ideas. Grammy

Here is the best snickerdoodle recipe I have ever used

Now every year I do our cookie exchange a little different than the above kinds. I have a convection oven and can bake 3 trays at once. So I invite everyone over for a one day baking event. I provide the basics--flour, sugar of 3 varieties, butter, vanilla, soda, baking powder, eggs, lots of spices, you need to bring your special ingredients and recipe. Like if there are kisses, coconut or something like that, although I usually have that stuff too. We spend all morning and early afternoon baking, have lunch together, divide up the cookies on the way out. We have a wonderful time with Chritmas music and being social and we have always had a ton of cookies. I am able to give gifts as well as use them for all the holiday festivities. Many hands make light and fun work.
