Eastern Ports - What to do??

We are taking our three DD's (12,11,4) on 7-night Eastern in March. I am totally confused as to what to do while we are at St. Maarten and St. Thomas. We would love to do some sightseeing, shopping and swimming. I would prefer not to do a DCL excursion - they seem very short in time and very expensive.

Please help me plan my days - what do I need to know. How do we get there?
