Earthquake

Feeling better thanks. Had Gall Bladder removed last Monday. Back to work this monday.
I wish the West Coasters pipe it down. There are a lot of us that never experienced being in a earthquake. Now we know what to expect. Besides they said a west coast earthquake is very different from a east coast. :goodvibes
Glad to hear that you are doing better, Harlemgirl720
Just giving you guys a bit of our "laid-back" west coast perspective & sense of humor about it...
Please know that we here in California are behind you guys back east 100%!!! :thumbsup2

Well we east coasters are not used to such events, and the ghost of 9/11 still figures prominently whenever a building is swaying/shaking for an unknown reason. I am not sure those living further west have the same reaction, or at least as deeply.
And on a lighter note, are these west coasters having a good laugh at our expense some of the same people who were freaking out over a freeway closing last month? Can you say "carmegeddon"?

I had not thought of the implications of 9/11 - and am very sorry that that kind of deeply ingrained fear exists for our friends & family & even strangers out there. :grouphug:
Continuing on the "lighter note"...
Fortunately Carmageddon was a non-event due to the fact that L.A. people did as asked and stayed away!!! Good job, us!! Here is a shot of the "busiest freeway intersection in the world" on Carmageddon Sunday - pretty amazing!!

We're right down the road from you -- felt it also! Schools cancelled activities on property to "check for damage"...

We live in MT. Airy, MD and our school system (howard) shut down all the buildings. I am so miffed because I DIDN"T feel it. Must have been in my car because everyone I know felt it. When my DD and I got to Walmart I heard a cashier asking someone if they felt an earthquake. I thought they were nuts. But both Hubby at work and DS at home said it was something really freaky. I am SOOOOOO mad I missed all the excitement.

The people in California must be laughing at us Easterners:rotfl:

Personally didn't feel it, but friends who work in downtown in the taller buildings did and they were evacuated - said it felt like they were on a boat.....this is in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada - about an hour drive from the US border where the I-95 ends in Maine.

They felt it in Canada????

I was no more than 100 miles from the Epicenter and I missed it!!!:scared1::scared1::scared1:

Now I hope Hurricane Irene show up so I can have some excitement!! JK;)

Pretty sure the only people who were "freaking out" over "Carmageddon" were the media; no one I knew in LA was particularly worried. Also, you're talking about one county out of 58 in CA, which is only one of the states of the west coast. Believe me when I say that the residents of LA County are VERY different from any other region in CA or the west coast in general. ;)

Nevertheless, earthquakes are scary, regardless of the location. The city of San Francisco maintains an excellent website detailing steps that everyone can take to prepare for disaster situations, including earthquakes: http://72hours.org/ :goodvibes

My favorite twitter post from yesterday:

Dear West Coast, we aren't use to earthquakes, so yes it's major to us. How about we send y'all a blizzard? Love, East Coast

I think if you were moving you might not have felt it. I was at work standing and we heard something fall and then my Dad said he thought it was a earthquake and I stood still and felt it for a second, but people I know who were sitting felt it more

Those pics of the soda can tipped over and the chair was quite funny. I cannot imagine what the west coasters go through. So we all have our quirks. West coast - Earthquakes and Fires. Midwest- Tornadoes and Flooding. East coast- Blizzards, hurricanes, flooding and now earthquakes. Not much we can do but live with it.

:lmao::lmao: I love Twitter!! There were some good tweets like "You know your addicted to Twitter when you tweet “Earthquake OMG” instead of looking for the exit door. #USA" :rotfl:

Schools in Louisa County (close to the epicenter) are closed now until September 6 due to damage to the schools.
We had another aftershock about 1:00 this morning- registered 4.5.
Woke to the house shaking- I am ready for this to stop, I am tired of straightening up the pictures on the walls;)

People in Christchurch NZ have had over 8400 after shocks since the big earthquake on 4 September 2010, including the 22 Feb one that killed many. They went from a city that had nothing in the way of earthquakes to living on shaky ground all the time. They are really tired of straightening everything out and trying to live normally when some still have portaloos for toilets. If I felt another earthquake in your area I'd be running outside for a doorway as the first wave came - we do with any earthquake here and my area of NZ is known for earthquakes. Since Chch nobody in NZ takes earthquakes lightly and the slightest movement we are all in doorways or other safe places. Stay safe and alert.:grouphug:

I can only imagine what you and the people of New Zealand have been through. 8400 aftershocks!:scared1:
Thankfully there were no serious injuries here- just damage.
Thinking of you all- stay safe!

Up here in the North Island we are fine. Wellington used to be the place for shakes, so I grew up with it. Now the crown has gone to Chch, I don't know how they live with it to be honest. The first big quake they had just damage, then the Boxing Day big aftershock did more damage and finally the 22 Feb big aftershock was a disaster. It was all down to timing, it was lunchtime and the buildings unstable and plenty of people on the streets to get hit by falling masonry etc. So watch the aftershocks, they can be nasty.
