I bought some ear candles at GNC tonight after reading about them on the board a couple of months ago. WOW! I was simply amazed at how much ear wax was in the cone when I was done with my left ear! There was soooooo much!! I always have problems with that ear too (fluid in it a lot in the winter) so maybe this will help it! The right ear had hardly any wax leftover. My sister was gagging when I was showing her all the wax LOL. It's so neat!! :teeth:

Yes there are skeptics and reports to confirm and disavow the ear candles, but, I can tell you this, I've been using them for years and have had not a single ear infection or fluid problem since I started. This was after having chronic problems for years. So, I'll keep candling :cool1:

count another fan here!! I can't tell you how many time my ears have felt better after a good candleing!

I'm also curious about how this works! I had a terrible ear infection last year, my eardrum ruptured. I still get ear pain, but Dr. says it's not infected.

I use ear drops and the syringe thingies on my fussy right ear and these work well. But I'm curious about the candles too.

I don't think so! Think I'll ask my doc about this one first!

I would think that unless you have a doctor who practices homeopathic medicine, they usually advise against homeopathic remedies for things. Need a doc with a little "granola" mindset.

[Note: granola is what me and my friend affectionally refer to those with a "natural" lifestyle mindset--homepathic remedies and organic foods]

I have always wanted to do this! A woman I work with does it. I might have to go to GNC and check it out.

Seems like everyone around here has tried it at least once.

I saw a report on my local news about this. They said that the "wax" that was dumped out of the remaining portion of the candle was cause by the candle itself.

Personally, I don't see how this could possibly work.

For a flame to burn, it needs air. If you stick the pointy end of the candle in your ear enough to cut off or almost cut off the air, the candle won't burn or burn well. That is unless it can draw air in through your ear from some other opening in your head.

Speaking as someone who worked with microbiologists for almost 12 years and now works with medical doctors...I say use them if you have a problem with wax and/or fluid build-up in either of your ears.

The candles work because the heat produced when burning them causes pressure to build up within the ear. When the pressure is released suddenly, a vacuum is created that sucks out all the wax and/or fluid into the cone.

Some doctors don't recommend them because there is a billable medical procedure to remove excess wax and/or fluid.

My opinion--the investment to try the candles is minimal in both expense and time. So if you're having trouble with your ears, give them a try.

You have little to lose. :)

Try burning a candle without sticking it in your ear. You'll be surprised at how much "ear wax" you get...

Here's another take on ear candling:
http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a5_098.html
The medical team consisted of Keith Block, a family practitioner with an interest in alternative medicine, and Cecil's good friend Clark Federer. Clark was a surgeon rather than an ear-nose-throat guy, but I meant to be prepared for any eventuality. Our subject was Pat, a 30-year-old male who'd had earwax removed via conventional medical treatment some years earlier.

First we peered into Pat's ears with an otoscope, the familiar flashlight-type examining device. The poor guy had enough wax in there to make his own candles. We put him on the table, lit the candle, and stuck it in his ear in the prescribed manner. Then we watched, struggling to suppress the thought that we should also be chanting and maybe sacrificing small animals.

When the candle had burned down to two inches we snuffed it and examined the treated ear with the otoscope. No change, except that possibly the wax was dented where the candle had been stuck in. Upon slicing open the candle stub, however, we found a considerable quantity of brown wax and whitish powder. The manual had the audacity to intimate that the powder was candida yeast extracted from the ear, conceding that possibly "1% to 10%" was from the used candle. The disappointed MDs were more inclined to say it was 100 percent, but just to be sure we burned another candle in the open air. When we sliced it open we found wax and powder identical to that in the first. Conclusion: it's a hoax. Ain't it always the way?

A friend of mine held the candle in the palm of his hand and was amazed at the amount of earwax his palm contained.

DH used them on occasion for his ears until I read about them being a fake so we burned an extra one just by itself and sure enough! Full of "wax"

Try sticking one just in a cup and letting it burn down, then opening it up to see what's inside.

That was definately not candle wax at the bottom of the cone :teeth:
